I think you have to remember that mailing lists like this one and brand
specific Web pages are COMPETITION for the traditional press, not sources
for editorial content. The nice folks who write and edit those articles get
paid to do it. And like real estate brokers, they're not too excited about
'For Sale by Owner' signs.
Magazine editors and writers rarely get the opportunity to really specialize
in one machine like we do. Sure, they are experienced with motorcycles and
understand a lot of what makes bikes perform better. But we all talk (and
type) about the same bike every day. Many of us work on them everyday. Many
of us ride them everyday in all kinds of conditions. Collectively we've
tried EVERY option and accessory available. And this list, like most others,
is not afraid to say what it thinks about all those accessories. Magazines
just can't do that.
A story like the one in Rider magazine is primarily about advertising. Sure,
the bike ended up a lot better than it was. Big deal. Write Fred a check for
that kind of money and you'll get a helluva lot better bike back than the
one you dropped off. Of course a 5 gal plastic tank isn't worth hundreds of
dollars, but it is to Baja Designs to get exposure for the product. And its
probably cheaper than OEM if you crunched your original.
I'm on several lists. Several things are pretty common on every bike list.
Suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, pipe and jet kits, tires, luggage,
tricks of the trade and how-to's specific to the particular bike. Its that
kind of information that brings us all here in the first place. When you
make a few friends along the way its so much the better.
Magazines have traditionally been the connection between products and their
intended market. We on the internet with our Web pages and mailing lists are
giving them a run for their money and they haven't quite figured out how to
respond. IMHO

Scott,
Unless you want the rugged, manly look of a wire guard, now favored by the
SUV princess moms in suburban Denver, I suggest you check out the clear vinyl
guard from Griot's Garage. Peel and stick right onto the lens surface. They
claim it'll protect a headlight from breaking under the impact of a pellet
gun at 20 feet. They don't say how powerful the pellet gun is, however.
Anyway, I've used the stuff on two Beemers in our gravely environment with no
headlight breakage.

Cat. No. 10227 is 10" X 16", $22.95
Cat. No. 10228 is 20" X 16", $39.95
A little planning and judicious cutting means you can do several motorcycle
headlights even with the smaller sheet.

Make sure there is proper air pressure in the tires, oil in the engine,
coolant in the cooling system and possibly the rear suspension set for your
weight. And no, the number one setting is not proper if you weigh 360 lbs.
Put gas in the gas tank and go ride! Yes the front end dives quite a bit
but you don't need to do anything yet just be aware of it.
Did I mention going and riding the bike?

As of yesterday afternoon, I own one of each. I know the KLR and the Beemer
are about dead even in a drag race up to 85 mph because it has been
scientifically proven by a buddy riding his KLR against my GS/PD.
So far, I'd say you have 100+% of a GS's capabilities at about 75% of the
weight.

The peel and stick stuff from dual-star is exactly the same stuff sold in
auto parts stores for cars - the only difference is the dual-start item is
cut to fit your KLR and its more expensive. I bought a big sheet of the car
stuff and did my GS500 as well.

Hey Vik (or anyone else)! Where on the bike does
the adhesive make it's contact? Does it "glue"
directly onto the light or on the fairing
surrounding it? I'm talking about the Dual Star
model here... Thanks in advance...

I sort of assumed that the list was largely if not excessively above the age
of majority and that language suitable for adults was appropriate. I am not
suggesting we swear every second word or get into explicit sexual
discussions, but some divergence from what you'd say in front of your mom
seems reasonable. It never occurred to me that this might be a problem.
Do we have a definition of what's acceptable in terms of these issues? I
don't mind living with whatever the lists wants, but I don't know what that
is.
If I am over the line somebody let me know and I'll straighten up.

It sticks to the glass itself....sort of like those laminates you see on
