Alex,
I plan to leave Houston around June 1.
I may stop by Moab for a couple of days to terrorize and thrill the local
inhabitants.
After that, my itinerary is a pretty loose "go where my wheels take me"
format, with a
compass bearing of NW.
I'm not sure yet whether I'll go through Seattle on the way up to visit my
mum and sisters,
or on the way down, maybe taking the ferry to Seattle with wife and family.
It would be fun to meet up, perhaps we can arrange some sort of message
service with my
wife, or something, to establish a rendezvous.
I think Ken R. is also headed in that direction.

The big guns system is great.. the only minuses to it were that its a bit
loud and some of the rivets on the logo tag are loose on mine. But thats
easy to fix next time I replace the packing. You are going to rejet, right?
Call factory pro if you need any jets. They even stock the pilot jets for
the CV.

Received two packages in the mail today. All the back-issues of DSN (thanks
Gino), and my Big Gun exhaust. The first package was considerably cheaper
than the second. The exhaust (complete set from front to back) came to
about $500 Canadian. Then there was an extra charge I didn't count on (in
addition to the G.S.T. - $35, and Shipping - $43), an additional $60 in
import charges (brokerage fee, freight/port fee). Once all was said and
done I'm out $638. This thing better work as good as it looks.
Any one else out there running this exhaust? You like?

Honda replacement keys are easy.. take your ignition switch numbers and
title to a dealer and they can make you a key. Kawasaki doesnt do the same
according to my dealer. I have no idea how to replace them, but if you get
any info please pass it along to the list! Thanks :)

Jeff, this is easy, take your helmet lock off and take it to your lock smith
or dealer. When we were a dealer, we had several key sets and could usually
find a precut key. Suzuki sells their dealers a coded key cutting machine,
Kaw may do the same now. Ill bet the key number is on the helmet lock too.

I agree 100%. A handgun in the hands of someone not proficient in the safe
use of it,against a bear, is more likely to endanger theirselves or do
nothing more than anger or enrage the bear. I hunt and shoot handguns
competitively ( IPSC Combat shoots)and was an NRA handgun safety instructor
for 4 years. I attended Col. Cooper`s Gunsite school , with the stress
proficiency add-on.
I too, have spent most of my life in bear or " dangerous animal"
environements and sadly have had encounters which unfortunately forced me to
take lethal measures. I did not hesitate to save my life but regretted in
having to do so. There was no "macho" posturing here, I intended to protect
myself and did.
There are several bear maulings and mountain lion attacks a year here in
Montana and I consider it foolhearty to take
unneccessary risks when a confrontation could have been prevented or ended
with no one hurt.

Howdy.
More carb stuff. With the warm weather now here, 65-75 degrees, I'm
finding that I really don't need to use the choke at all when the bike is
cold. Sometimes I'll use it a bit, but never at the max. Even in the
morning when it's in the mid-50's (fahrenheit, of course) this is the
case.
Is this a sympton of my fuel delivery problems or is this standard
behavior for the KLR? What are the experiences of others?

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Somebody tried to theive my KLR.
Of course, these punks don't have the means to remove a disk lock so they
didn't get far, but they did bust the two bolts that hold the ignition
switch.
With my bikes, this is the 3rd time I've had my ignition switch busted up
in the past 8 months. I should learn not to even bother locking the damn
thing. It only stops 2-year olds from stealing the bike.
Today I'll go get a cover for it, which I have to lock on by punching
holes in the upper front of the cover and running a cable through the
holes and around the forks. (I've lost 2 covers in this fine city.) I've
found that having a cover on does deter the rinky dink theiving scum from
messing with the bike too much.

to start it...I am jetted and still need to choke or else it won't start. Did you happen to
check the sizes of the jets when you pulled them? It is back to building that baseline info..

I stopped in at my friendly Kawasaki/Yamaha dealer yesterday and as I expected they didn't know
a thing about the Gila or the KLR650-AT.

I was thinking that it would be used only to support weight under a footpeg
in conjunction with the side stand to raise one wheel off the ground for
tube changes & chain lube. Sorta like that Motion Pro thingy.

At least you have a choke to use.. the FCR carb has no choke! Try starting
that on a cold new england morning. I have to stuff a towel in the airbox to
choke the air supply and crank the idle to start it.
I've been pondering making some kind of a valve in the intake box that I
could use to restrict airflow for a choke. Could also modify the stock
airbox lid.

I didn't note the jet sizes. They should be all the stock sizes, no? The
previous owners didn't mess with them at all. Too rich, eh? Maybe I'll put
that pilot screw back to the factory setting of being seated all the way.
If I had the bucks I'd probably go with the direct-action Keihen (sp?)
that Fred has. Not just yet, though. I better get this carb working fine
before I change anything else.

Yes I will be re-jetting. I wanted to wait before ordering any jets to read
the info that came with the exhaust. In the original order advertisment
they said that the exhaust came with jetting recommendations. I was too
busy looking at my reflection from the can to bother with reading anything
that came with it.
