I've watched the bears around here enjoy Corona and chips

appreciate a little jalapeno spray with their klrist.

Mark, I agree with Stuart, the pre-flight stool is light and with a cushion,
makes a great stool to carry on a motorcycle, but I don`t consider it stable
enough or strong enough to use as a bike stand. Mine has had lot`s of use
and has held up great, but it`s not designed for that much weight.

It is a good day to die
Bear spray is not mace. It`s a mixture based on 10% Capsicum
( peppers) and has stopped charging bears in their tracks.

They are stuck in there pretty tightly. The instructions that come with the
pipe are bogus. You can't even get a dowel rod from one end of the IDS to the
other!
I took the end cap and discs off, and tapped it pretty hard on a very soft
wood-topped bench. Slid about 1/8", but then I got the idea to take a set of
thin wire strippers, stand the pipe on it's big end, and put one side of the
wire strippers (You could use many things, maybe even a paint stirring stick)
across the slots that are cut into the smaller end. Put whatever you use,
pliers or whatever into the slots until it is level with the inner black part
of the pipe. Then I just tapped on it slightly hard with a hammer, and the
whole thing began to slide down as I tapped slowly. I was leary of doing
this, but it was the only thing that worked, and it didn't damage the inside
pipe at all (i thought it would bend it). A paint stick would probably work
just as well or better, and there wouldn't be any chance of hurting the
inside pipe. I also sprayed ZEP45 along the outer part of the inside, and
that seemed to help the sliding as it went down. This is the only method I
could come up with guys/gals, other than banging it crazily on a bench, which
would have bent it up and made it look more like SuperCrap, than SuperTrapp :)

Skip et al,
We have no problems with weapons, pistols, etc.. as long as you don't carry
any!..=)
In our version of your constitution, where you guys have the bit about the
right to bear arms...ours says something about the right to drink good beer
and party our asses of!
I carried a pistol in the army and the first thing I did was grab a rifle
(whenever possible). I was trained to use the pistol and I think I am a
decent shot (no sniper here), but a pistol is just too little too late (mind
you I kept the pistol for certain situations buildings, trenches, etc). I
understand for personal protection in an urban environment you can't be
toting around an assault weapon (or can you guys???), but most people's
ability to use a pistol effectively verges on nil when under pressure. Even
more scary than a person's inability to actually hit what they are aiming at
is their propensity to fire in the general direction of the bad man and hit
other people/things.
I think the best investment in personal safety an urbanite can make is some
sort of self-defense class. Forget the black belt unless you are really
passionate about martial arts, but you can learn 10 different ways to
incapacitate/disable a person pretty easily even if you are small or a lady.
The best thing is you'll always have those skills with you, there is no
safety button, and no ammunition is required.
If I ever hook up with one of you guys for a ride/trip either don't bring
your gun or show me some reason to believe you are extremely competent with
it (both in skill at using it and knowing when to fire/when to not fire).
Otherwise its more of a threat to me than to any bad guys.
Oh btw I have a ceramic/kevlar body armour (gift from a client) so at least
tell ahead of time you are bringing your gun - I'll leave my MX chest
protector at home and bring the body armour.

All handguns are illegal to carry across, no exceptions. You have to
petition the Province you`re going into to bring a "competitive" handgun
in. Long guns are legal, but you better declare them. When going to Alaska,
mail your pistol to a gunsmith in Alaska and pick it up when you get there.
The bear spray is illegal to carry into Canada, but you can buy once
you`re there.
Yes it does work in most cases, but only if less than a year old.
We had 3 incidents in the Park last year where it was used and it worked in
all three cases. We had a case the year before where it took the whole can
and the bear still wouldn`t completely back down. It turned out the stuff
was 3 years old and was estimated to be only 30% potent.
No, it doesn`t always work, but I prefer it to nothing and compared to a
handgun used by a proficient individual, I will always choose the gun. I`ve
used them on bears, I have no experience with the Spray.

Man, all this talk about bears has me wondering about flying to Key West

Anyone ever see the movie Grizzly? Christopher George was in it. I believe
it was made shortly after Jaws.
So far I'm considering bear repellant, and kung fu kicks to the bear's
schnoz.....

I will agree you with as long as we keep the "proficient individual" part
front and centre. Unfortunately, I have met too many people who figure a
subscription to Soldier of Fortune and a copy of Dogs of War is all it takes
to be proficient at using a handgun. When put in a situation where they
have to decide under pressure what to do they either freeze or do something
nutty.
I am trained to use a handgun in combat (a charging bear qualifies as
combat) and I am able to function well under stress (a charging bear
qualifies as stress), but I would not want to be holding a 9mm pistol and
facing a bear. If I was really worried or had to protect my kids I would
carry a shotgun.
But, ultimately what it comes down to is what makes you comfy and able to
enjoy your time in the backcountry. I have 15 years of experience in the
backcountry and have had several bear/wolf/big animal encounters, I have
never carried any weapon/spray and I have never felt threatened or fearful.
I am more scared about some ass*ole taking me out when I am putting around
on my KLR than a bear attack.
Hey at least I worked "KLR" into my msg!

Alex, Fred said the were 15-1, but didn't say whether they were good looking
or the product of too little genetic diversity (is that the PC way to say
inbred?...=)
Just kidding Fred.....ummmm....you are still sending me the parts I need

I know a guy who went to Japan for two years to teach english classes. He
studied Aikido for a bit while there. He was also charged by an elephant
while there - don't ask me how. He froze. Can you say "PUNT"?

Received two packages in the mail today. All the back-issues of DSN (thanks
Gino), and my Big Gun exhaust. The first package was considerably cheaper
than the second. The exhaust (complete set from front to back) came to
about $500 Canadian. Then there was an extra charge I didn't count on (in
addition to the G.S.T. - $35, and Shipping - $43), an additional $60 in
import charges (brokerage fee, freight/port fee). Once all was said and
done I'm out $638. This thing better work as good as it looks.
Any one else out there running this exhaust? You like?

Vik, I think you pretty much hit the nail right on the head. I resonate with
this philosophy 100%.
Personally, I'd rather lug a camera around, and take pictures of animals
than shoot them. But every now and then
I get a little insecure, and the "gun freak" macho mentality surfaces. I
don't even own a gun, aside from
the wife's .25 semi, that she keeps in her bed table (probably for
protection from me...).
You want real scary danger? Hang out in a city.
Still, After hearing Skip's information on the pepper spray, it seems like
it might be a good idea for
a little extra peace of mind when things "go bump in the night".
(Especially after just finishing that
late night peanut butter sandwich, and realizing you can't find your
toothbrush...)
