  51. I would like to try reenacting the fur trade era, or eastern longhunter era.  Are there any activities in NC that I could check out?  I live on the coast, so anything in that area would be great.  Thanks for the help.

  201. Also, just across the NC line in Johnson City, TN (About as East TN as you 
  202. get before getting into NC) is the reenactment of the Raid on the Watauga at 
  203. the Rocky Mount Museum. I think it is on the weekend of July 22 this year.  
  204. They have a website and a toll-free # to call and get info.

  206. Jim Sawgrass, a fellow out of FL who does native american reenacting and 
  207. cultural education for a living says it is a pretty good event.  This year 
  208. will be my first time going.

  229. I am in the middle of this book right now. I am just beginning looking into 
  230. the RMFT era, and this book seems to be an excellent introduction, I'd 
  231. reccommend it. The maps alone are very good.  For what it's worth ... ;-)

  246. Are you sure the raid's at Rocky Mount though? I thought they did that down
  247. at Sycamore Shoals in Elizabethton. Pretty darn good event, as I recall.

  250. Oh.. Rocky Mount is definately worth the drive if you're in the area. Spent
  251. a lot of time there as a kid -- good folks. Say hi to Cosmo, if he's still
  252. around.

  341. You are correct that there was the raid (not the only) on the Watauga fort, 
  342. but the event at Rocky Mt. is called the Raid on the Watauga.
  343.  
  344. I used to go to the fort at Sycamore Shoals and take the trail towards the 
  345. river on the far left of the fort where I found a little rock spit that 
  346. jutted out into the river.  I would go and sit there and just watch and 
  347. listen to the river go by and see what it had to say.  They still do the 
  348. drama there in the summer!!!!  Also, something worth seeng if you have not 
  349. before!!!

  351. Also, if anyone else is in the area from a distance, it is worth the trip to 
  352. go to Roan Mtn. and hike to  the top of the bald for the view.
  353.  
  354. If you attend Rocky Mt. we will have to rally up and take ourselves and our 
  355. respective compadres down near the university at the bottom of the hill below 
  356. the tree streets and hit Poor Richard's tavern for the good grub!!!  (Also, 
  357. understand some of our friend from south of the border have opened up a fine 
  358. eatery situated just on the left of the right fork of North Roan Street as it 
  359. splits.  El Matadore - authentic eats)
  360.  
  361. And I will, of course, have to hike back to thetop of Buffalo Mtn. to see the 
  362. overlook of the city. (That got a little dangerous fora while b/c of varioous 
  363. underhanded types gatheing there for any variety of reasons but I understand 
  364. it is well patrolled now)  And go back thru Erwin and visit Beauty Spot to 
  365. watch the sun go down and see the three nearby cities "float" in the night!!!
  366.  
  367. Anyone reading this, the sights mentioned are worth the effort to take in.  
  368. Each one, in its own way, sparks that part of us that longs to be a mtn. man 
  369. or longhunter or explorer to burn a little more brightly.
