This is a two headed coin for me, I can see both sides - the dealer and the buyer's view. Seeing how many of the dealer's on this list are just sitting back to this debate, I'll give you my two cents worth. We have always tried to be fair and treat those dealing with us, as we would like to be treated if in their shoes. That was a standard policy the family set back in the 1930's when starting to "serve the public" and we have carried that policy ever since. One rule that has to be looked at is a fair profit - someone has to pay to turn on the lights, pay the rent, cover operating costs and it would be nice to earn a wage, I think everyone will agree with this. The "fair profit" is the hard part, many things will tell you if 10% or 70% is where you need to be - turn over and location is usually a big thing, square footage really changes with this one - cost wise, as does what is a fair value for the market in that area. Example, in Masonville CO the profit margin was low, reason I owned the building and we're out in the country so we survived on a 25% margin with "Buckhorn Rendezvous", but in Denver with square footage, etc. it's hard to survive on 50-60%, again like they say "location, location, location". Agreed there are a few that just plain take advantage of the trade with item mismarked for time period, value, etc. - but your in the driver's seat and it's up to you to point out that the item is not correct for the period or a little out of line price wise for what that item is bringing at another shop or on the internet, remember he wants to sell the piece and if he's bull-headed or just an ass, walk away. That will wake him up faster than anything else, he just lost a sale. Hell when someone came into our store I would tell myself and my employees, this customer is either a "tire kicker" or has money to be spent. Either way we treat them to a good experience whether they are knowledgeable or brand new to the product, I want them to have a good learning experience. That was the way you would be treated, infact a gentleman in the same business would come up and watch our operation on his day off, Mike would just shake his head with some dealings - feeling I gave away the item or sent to much time with the customer. Oh well that's the way we work, and our customers come back, I don't care if they want underwear and we sell guns, I'll get them a price - bottom line, we wanted their business. I think many loose the idea that "the dealer needs the customer" and not the other way around that several have stated on this topic. Bottom-line: "your in the driver's seat" Nothing to do with the dealer being a thief, bad person or anything else, it's your money like mentioned before - he wants it, needs a profit but doesn't need to loose a customer if he wants to survive. Your smart tell him of the problem, fair value, etc. that's all that can be done. You walk away and believe me he'll think about that more than you will. Sidney Pollack, the director, had them taken out because they "just didn't work". If many would just think about their own work and if there's no profit there's lay-offs. I remember those Sunday afternoons when Mike would watch customers that he couldn't deal with during the week show up at the Buckhorn and you make the deal, we talked about that more than once, you sold the item for the suggested price and he had marked it up 10-15% higher and lost the sale, good lesson for him to learn. We need to do some research on what we're buying before shopping, then shop for the best price, whether its new or an antique. If you have research information with you on an antique and know what a fair going price is, most dealers are interested in what you have found and I have seen then change the price.
