  162. Yeah, lots of fun. A good knowlege of the history of the time period is
  163. necessary to be competitive, as well as a good grasp of woodcraft, shooting
  164. ability, which includes fast reloads, and the ability to think on your feet.
  165.  
  166. Woodswalks are held the first week-end of November at Ft. DeChartre,
  167. so you just missed this years event. Another one is scheduled the first
  168. weekend
  169. of Feb, but this is an F&I military event. Only for military units.
  170.  
  171. Another woodswalk is scheduled for the last weekend of Feb at the Bullseye
  172. gun club range, south of DeSoto MO.
  173.  
  174. Most teams will allow observers to follow them through the course, please
  175. do ask permisssion though. Some teams are touchy about observers.

  189. To give just a little information on two of the woodswalks:
  190. The one held at Fort Chartres is with live rounds.  The one at
  191. Fort Osage uses blanks.  
  192.  
  193. Fort Chartres woodswalk is a hoot to do.  I've been doing that one 
  194. for more than 15 years.    Missed out on the walk this year......
  195. truck trouble.   
  196.  
  197. I've been doing the walk at Ft. Osage since the beginning.   If I
  198. recall correctly, we only had one event with live shooting.   Since 
  199. then it's been blanks for all events.    Not to downplay Ft. Osage
  200. in any way, its just set up for all events to be done as live
  201. historical reenactments with all participants staying in Character
  202. through the event.
  203.  
  204. In other words,  Ft. Chartres is fun, you are being yourself while
  205. doing a historical activity.   Some stay in character, but others
  206. are just their typical rendezvous self!   LOL     However, Ft. Osage
  207. is set up to basically entertain the incoming public which comes to
  208. view the events held on site; as well as teach the participant how
  209. warfare was enacted during that time period.

  211. Not trying to downplay either one, I have fun at both, they are just
  212. totally different from each other.

  254. Ever try to live trap beaver to repopulate old areas...it's a gas.  Used
  255. suitcase type live traps that could hold two children inside.  Come to
  256. think of it, if we had trapped out those kids dumb enough to grab a
  257. Barbie doll on the trap pan, we wouldn't have these freeking tree
  258. huggers around today!!!!!

  335. The structures (large grain elevators) will be about 3/4 mile south of
  336. Pompey's Pillar and directly in line with the view of the plains and
  337. mountains on the southern horizon. You'll no longer see anything approaching
  338. what Lewis and Clark saw. The view will definitely be spoiled--unless, of
  339. course, you get off on looking at grain elevators. (I'm a believer in the
  340. value of grain elevators--grew up in a Wyoming town named Wheatland for
  341. crying out loud--but there is a place for everything and within spittin'
  342. distance of a national historic landmark isn't the place for grain
  343. elevator).

  839. I have a question that needs answering in a hurry!  I have been intending to 
  840. get into braintan and have a processor who pulls his hides ready to give me a 
  841. bunch.  BUT today I went hunting with my father and we got three whitetails 
  842. between (7 point, 125 lb. whitetail for me) us.  I had the processor pull 2 
  843. of the hides and give them to me.  Because I cannot get to them immediately 
  844. (still getting fleshing beam, etc. set up) and b/c it is too warm to let the 
  845. air chill the hides, I bought a 25 lb. bag of salt and salted the hides on my 
  846. back patio (my wife freaked.  the two kids next door think it is "so cool".)  
  847. They are fur dows, salt on wet side and folded over on themselves like a taco 
  848. shell.  I put one in a plastic bag and one out (to save one if either move is 
  849. a mistake).  They are still sitting out on my patio in the shade.  They are 
  850. not fleshed yet.  My question is WHAT NEXT?  How long will they store this 
  851. way?  Do I need to resalt? ETC.  I have a list of braintan instruction guides 
  852. but the library here has none and neither do the bookstores (ordering will 
  853. take 2 - 4 weeks)  A lot of folks have gave me advice, but I am still 
  854. confused.  HAS ANYONE OUTTHERE WHO HAS SUCCESSFULLY BRAINTANNED GIVE ME SOME 
  855. "HOW - TO"? feel free to respond off-list to my e-mail.

  876. Unless the temperature is quite cool, you must get off the larger pieces
  877. of meat and fat or you risk ruining the hide. You can use a knife to do
  878. this if you don't have a beam as it's not too difficult. Otherwise
  879. rolling them up and stashing them in a chest freezer is my
  880. recommendation. If you are going to salt them, I'd recommend getting a
  881. wood pallet to put them on. Then stretch out a hide and liberally cover
  882. it with salt. Feed salt for cattle works best, but rock salt will work
  883. also. Be sure to work the salt into all the folds around the legs and
  884. neck. Then lay the next hide on top of the first one and repeat the
  885. process. I've stacked five hides this way and left them all winter well
  886. covered. I'ts  good to slightly incline the pallet so any liquids can run
  887. off.  Be sure to use lots of salt. I put about 1 1/2 inches per hide so
  888. it will really soak up the moisture from the hide and discourage any
  889. bugs. Next spring pour the salt out on a tarp and dry it out and you can
  890. use it again.

  905. Brother C Kent.  Where do you live that the weather is so warm to threaten 
  906. your hides?   Does it get below 40 degrees at night?  I have a full acre of 
  907. snow I would be glad to give you - free.  The advise Teton Todd gave you - 
  908. amen!  If you have nights below 40 degrees so you can expose  the hides for 
  909. cooling, then cover them with an insulation and keep them shaded to retain 
  910. the cool during the day . . .  this may take the place of  refridgerated 
  911. cooling (sounds like your wife may not give you a full endoresment to that 
  912. idea).  And what Todd said about cutting the "chunks" away . . . if you have 
  913. fat chunks and they get warm and melt, that grease going into the hide will 
  914. ruin it as it goes rancid.  The best way to have a good hide - a little more 
  915. work at the time, but saves you a lot of work later - is to skin mostly with 
  916. your hands, and not with your knife.  Sure, you have to make initial cuts to 
  917. get into the animal, but by using your hands and knuckles to separate that 
  918. hide, you end up with no flesh or fat clinging.  Years ago when I was buying 
  919. hides I got two hides from a young Mexican fellow that were the nicest I had 
  920. ever bought (some others looked like they had been skinned with a broken beer 
  921. bottle).  I asked him how he skinned - he told me:  He made the initial cuts 
  922. up the belly and brisket to the jaw, and those down the legs; then he started 
  923. to skin above the ears.  I should mention the carcass was hung from garage 
  924. rafters by the front legs.  When the ears and a little bit more were free, he 
  925. tied a rope around the bundle of ears and tied it to the bumper of his 
  926. Volkswagon.  Then he just pulled.  It left tiny little bits of muscle on the 
  927. lower back, but they were really insignificant.  I have found that sometimes 
  928. you have to give it a litttle "help" so these little muscles and those in the 
  929. flank area don't separate and go with the hide, rather than the carcass.
  930. They say this only works with legal kills.  Those taken during poaching 
  931. season have to be treated in a totally different style.

  947. Don't worry, you are ok so far. The salt will dry out the skins and
  948. preserve them from spoilage. Make sure you leave NO strips of fat on the
  949. skin; muscles are ok. I prefer to leave the skins exposed to the air, not
  950. folded like a taco but no harm's done.

  952. The DOWNSIDE is flushing the salt out when you find the time. My lazy
  953. man's method is weigh it down in a clean running brook or creek; failing
  954. that, soak in a 35 gallon trash can full of fresh water, dump where you
  955. think it's ok (not in your garden or lawn) and refill again. Twice might
  956. be sufficient. i presume you will want the hair off: which method do you
  957. prefer, the dry scrape or the wet scrape method? One's done on a frame and
  958. the other's done on a beam.
