  173. food stores.  When I was growing up in Texas my uncle would soak a cotton 
  174. rope (clothes line vintage . . . remember hanging clothes out to dry?) in 
  175. pennyroyal oil and tie it around his bird dog's neck to cut down on fleas.  
  176. Pennyroyal leaves are available but harder to find.

  282. warehouse in Iowa City, Iowa.  The address is 2340 Heinz Road, Iowa City, 
  283. Iowa.  Phone orders at 800-323-2131.  Their website is www.bpco-op.com.  
  284.  I also use Majestic Mountain Sage at http://www.the-sage.com/ for fragrance 
  285. oils and fats for soaps. No commercial, I have no investment, just a happy 
  286. customer, and these things are sort of hard to find.

  288. Assuming, of course, I can find the seeds or starter cuttings.

  399.  On the subject of mice Annie's ledger says " to trap mice, rats, voles and 
  400. other vermine put a drop of oil of rhodium wood on a piece of stale bacon to 
  401. baite your traps."

  403. I finally found Rhodium wood  oil (Convolvulus scoparius or C. virgatus) at a 
  404. hunting supply house.  It is in the 'supplies for making lures' section.  I have 
  405. used it as she suggested and it is amazing.  I caught 23 mice in one evening 
  406. at an old town hall we were cleaning up for a period wedding reception.
  407.  
  408. Annie said in a marginal note "Mr. Walton warns about using too much oil 
  409. around the home buildings as it will attracht large vermine and bears."
  410.  
  411. A 50/50 mix of pennyroyal oil and peppermint oil painted around door and 
  412. window sills and over cracks where mice come in will drive them away.  
  413. Again, care must be taken to keep pets and stock from licking up the 
  414. pennyroyal, as it can kill.
  415.  
  416. Mixing pennyroyal oil into tar and filling the rat and mouse holes with this 
  417. mixture will prevent them from using the entrances again.
  418.  
  419. To Remove Bedbugs from a Sleeping Chamber
  420. Place Mountain Mahogany branches between the mattresses and on the bed 
  421. posts.
  422.  
  423. For a very bad infestation place wild thyme in the beds, between the 
  424. mattresses, on the blankets and furs and lay thickly in all the corners of the 
  425. room.  Close the room up very tightly and heat the room if it is winter.  In 48 
  426. hours all the bedbugs will have disappeared.
  427.  
  428. Here you go, now I need a shower.  All this talk of critters is making me 
  429. ichy!

  465. the same ingredients.  Works pretty good but "Off" is actually better

  568. I dont know where yer at, but here in Northern Indiana, it is scarcer than
  569. hens teeth. I had an ear infection several years ago, and someone told me to
  570. soak a cotton ball in pennyroyal oil and put it in my ear( maya been a joke,
  571. hope not, though). I went everywhere in town, and the oldest Pharmacy in
  572. town DID have it, but as the Pharmascist told me" It's so old, the jar it's
  573. in would be worth 10 times the cost of the oil", so I would also appreciate
  574. some info on availability and cost.

  589. Pennyroyal grows like a weed in my garden.  I pick it and put it in oil and
  590. let it steep for several months.  I also simmer it in plain water to make a
  591. rinse to keep moths out of my wool; I add a bit to the final rinse water.

  594. A word of warning -- pennyroyal is poison -- don't ingest it.  I don't know
  595. if it will kill you, but I know it can at least make you sick.

  975. My 2x GreatGrandmother was a Cherokee "yarb woman" (herbalist) and
  976. midwife.  I have a small collection of her receipts for medicines and doses
  977. in
  978. a ledger book she kept.  She got most of them from her mother, who taught
  979. her the craft.  All of the receipts pre-date 1825, when Annie was born.
  980.  
  981. Annie's bug repellent for people and animals:
  982.  
  983. 1/8 oz. oil of sassafras
  984. 1/8 oz. oil of eucalyptus
  985. 1/8 oz. oil of bay
  986. 1/8 oz. oil of pennyroyal
  987. 5 oz. pyrethrum tea
  988. 5 oz. alcohol  75%
  989. mix together all ingredients and apply sparingly to skin of person or hair
  990. of
  991. animal.    Do not use on animals who may lick the oil off, or use on
  992. pregnant
  993. women.
  994.  
  995.  Pennyroyal is an abortifacient and deadly to take internally.  As little as
  996. 1
  997. oz. of pure oil of pennyroyal can be lethal.
  998.  
  999. I make this mixture leaving out the pennyroyal and it seems to work just
  1000. fine
  1001. for me and mine.  Pyrethrum (C. cinerariaefolium) also known as insect
  1002. flower or feverfew has aromatic flowers  that can be dried and powdered.  It
  1003. is used an an insecticide in many commercial products.  It's a contact
  1004. poison for bugs.  Grow it in your garden and bees will avoid your yard.
  1005. Pyrethrum is harmless to people.
  1006.  
  1007. I have several other receipts for moth proofing sachets and ridding a house
  1008. of fleas, bedbugs, mice and such from her ledger, if anyone is interested.
