I have read that, in several accounts and seen what you found, but from what I found else where, that was when the product was called this [steel wool] as a "trade" name and possibly patented at that time, around before this as mentioned before - just not called "steel wool".

I recently read about a "frontier artist" hired by the Hudson's Bay Company: Paul Kane (1847). Does anyone know the name of any artists in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company prior to 1840? Thank you in advance.

You may wish to look at the Swiss artist Peter Rindisbacher. He painted
in the 1820s & 30s out of the Selkirk colony on the Canadian Red Rivr.
The book _The Artist Was a Young Man_ by Alvin Josephy, Jr., (Amon
Carter Museum, Fort Worth, 1970) is probably the best work on
Rindisbacher.
Hope this was of some assistance.
