  32. Anyone going to Fort Union for their annual doin's June 17-20? The boys and I will be canoing in from Culbertson, MT and arrive Thursday afternoon sometime. We will be camped by the wood pile and the voyager canoes. Would like to meet some of you folks.

  85.    Everyone is invited to the 22th Annual Fort Union Rendezvous!
  86.    Come and participate in the Upper Missouri's finest fur trade fair at
  87. one of the West's most imposing historic sites. June 17-20, 2004
  88.    Jim Hanson, fur trade historian and editor of the Museum of the Fur
  89. Trade Quarterly will headline this year's event. Hanson will give
  90. presentations on fur trade medicine and Indian firearms.
  91.    There is no cost for camping, live music Saturday night, and a dance!
  92.    Easy to find- just head for the middle of nowhere! Or follow the
  93. Missouri River up to the Montana/North Dakota border and we'll be on
  94. the north bank. Hope we see you there!
  95.    You can even meet beaverboy and shake his tail! He'll even buy you a
  96. beer or a cup of coffee, what ever suits you.

  190. value;
  191. nevertheless, a Todd Glover just contacted them about the same thing.  =

  193. thought that was quite a coincidence to have this happen twice in the =
  194. same
  195. week when no one has asked for it previously.  The Museum called me to =
  196. see
  197. if Todd were an associate of mine.  I am trying to find out.  If so, =
  198. they
  199. want me to make copies of the paper and send it rather than having them =
  200. do
  201. it as they have very limited copies and do not want to incur the =

  974. Warren Ferris when writing about his 1834 New Year dinner told of their =
  975. more common meals:

  977. Our common meals consist of a piece of boiled venison, with a single =
  978. addition of a piece of fat from the shoulder of the buffalo; except on =
  979. Sundays, when we have in addition a kind of French dumpling, made of =
  980. minced meat, rolled into little balls enveloped with dough, and fried in =
  981. the marrow of buffalo; which is both rich and pleasant to the taste.=20

  984. I started out filling in some of the gaps in the recipeas follows:

  986. I found a recipe for Metis bread from a newsletter. I had to reduce the =
  987. salt by half in order to make it edible and that is what I used for the =
  988. dough. Here goes:

  994. Cut it up and mince it with a convenient rock or knife handle.

  1012. I can not vouch for all the ingredients in my recipe but you could vary =
  1013. it to your own level of authenticity. They was good stuff. Went well =
  1014. with Mike Powell's buffalo testis.

  1016. Since then I have never used exactly the same recipe for the dough or =
  1017. stuffing and it usually turns out pretty delectable anyway and everyone =
  1018. has had a once in life time experience. I have stuffed with ham, apples, =
  1019. sausage, different steaks and nothing. The dough has included sourdough, =
  1020. corn meal, oats/flour, baking soda, cinnamon, sugar, near straight =
  1021. flour. As you can guess I have raided the larders of other buckskinners =
  1022. to make these gems and that has lead to some of the best recipes.

  1024. A memorable example was on the last night of a six day ride. We were =
  1025. overlooking Green River Lake at the north end of the Winds with a raging =
  1026. waterfall at our backs. We had depleted every variation of flour from =

  1028. expedition. A very kindly lady skinner in a nearby camp took pity on my =
  1029. deplorable begging and gave me some cornbread mix she had. As the sun =
  1030. dropped behind a huge cliff and the horses munch happily on tall grass, =

  1091. <P>I started out filling in some of the gaps in the recipeas =
  1092. follows:</P>
  1093. <P>I found a recipe for Metis bread from a newsletter. I had to reduce =

  1095. by half in order to make it edible and that is what I used for the =
  1096. dough. Here=20
  1097. goes:</P>
  1098. <P>Cook a steak</P>
  1099. <P>Season as you desire. I used black and red pepper and allspice.</P>
  1100. <P>Cut it up and mince it with a convenient rock or knife handle.</P>
  1101. <P>Make the dough at increments of</P>
  1102. <P>1 cup flour</P>
  1103. <P>1/4 cup powdered milk</P>
  1104. <P>2 teaspoons salt</P>
  1105. <P>Water to make a manageable dough</P>
  1106. <P>Pull off a chunk of dough roll into a ball and then flatten</P>
  1107. <P>Envelope it around a ball of meat</P>
  1108. <P>Drop in hot lard</P>
  1109. <P>I can not vouch for all the ingredients in my recipe but you could =
  1110. vary it to=20
  1111. your own level of authenticity. They was good stuff. Went well with Mike =
  1112.  
  1113. Powell=92s buffalo testis.</P>
  1114. <P>Since then I have never used exactly the same recipe for the dough or =
  1115.  
  1116. stuffing and it usually turns out pretty delectable anyway and everyone =
  1117. has had=20
  1118. a once in life time experience. I have stuffed with ham, apples, =
  1119. sausage,=20
  1120. different steaks and nothing. The dough has included sourdough, corn =

  1122. oats/flour, baking soda, cinnamon, sugar, near straight flour. As you =

  1124. I have raided the larders of other buckskinners to make these gems and =

  1126. lead to some of the best recipes.</P>
  1127. <P>A memorable example was on the last night of a six day ride. We were=20
  1128. overlooking Green River Lake at the north end of the Winds with a raging =

  1130. waterfall at our backs. We had depleted every variation of flour from =

  1132. panyards of my trusty mule at that point and I went on a raiding =
  1133. expedition. A=20
  1134. very kindly lady skinner in a nearby camp took pity on my deplorable =

  1136. gave me some cornbread mix she had. As the sun dropped behind a huge =
