  22. I hate to be the voice of doom.  Wait, no actually I
  23. kinda like it.  Deep, booming, powerful--that's the
  24. voice of doom.  When doom speaks, no one asks, "Who
  25. said that?"
  26.  
  27. Unfortunately, the cover CD is not going to happen
  28. unless someone takes charge of it and shepherds it
  29. through to completion.  People mean well, but it
  30. becomes difficult to follow through if it's not the
  31. thing in the forefront of your mind and there's no
  32. indication that anyone cares if you actually deliver
  33. what you promised.
  34.  
  35. The person in charge of the CD doesn't have to
  36. actually do anything musical, they have to get on
  37. people's cases about when they promised to deliver
  38. material and continue to follow up until either the
  39. songs are received or the submitters formally back
  40. out.  When submitters back out, they need to solicit
  41. for more submissions and repeat the process.  Then,
  42. once all of the songs are in, they keep tabs on the
  43. person or persons who are actually burning the CDs,
  44. creating the packaging, and whatever else, until the
  45. thing is *done*.
  46.  
  47. My band, Flat Stanley, was the only one to actually
  48. deliver anything for the first attempt at this.  We
  49. actually didn't get off our asses to do anything until
  50. it looked like we were going to miss the first project
  51. deadline.  We were involved in a similar project to
  52. produce a fan-created OMD cover CD a few years before
  53. that.  It was also plagued by people saying they'd
  54. submit songs and then never did.  It took 2 years for
  55. that to actually get done, and I wasn't too sure it
  56. was actually going to happen until I finally held it
  57. in my hand.
  58.  
  59. The only way this effort will see the light of day is
  60. for someone to take on the task of hounding, hounding,
  61. hounding the submitters and production people until
  62. the product is out the door.
  63.  
  64. So, this is a prime opportunity for someone to step up
  65. and say, "I'm willing to be an asshole and hound and
  66. badger everyone who makes a commitment to this project
  67. until it is complete."  'Cause that's what it's gonna
  68. take.  If no one steps up to do it, then the project
  69. is going to fail again.
  70.  
  71. I know I'm not the person to do this 'cause I don't
  72. have enough free time anymore.  I just want to lay out
  73. what it is going to take for this effort to be a
  74. success.  I'm not trying to be negative, just
  75. realistic on the effort that will be required.  I
  76. really want to see this disk get made.

  124. I have a very strong desire to see this disk completed. I am willing to
  125. be the
  126. asshole who makes sure it becomes a reality. I outlined something
  127. before, but
  128. in case it didn't go through:

  130. 1.) If Claude will send me the one song and the contact information for
  131. all of
  132. the artists who have signed on so far, I will begin prodding to
  133. establish
  134. realistic and efficient deadlines as well as determine who is still
  135. involved.
  136. I will also begin this process with anyone new who signs on. (I only
  137. have
  138. Johans email right now). I need to know everyone involved.
  139.  
  140. 2.) I will put up a webpage and give email information regarding the
  141. progress
  142. of the disk (Including samples of the songs completed).
  143.  
  144. 3.) I will accept any and all artwork, or enlist the aid of anyone who
  145. would
  146. like to do the layout for a jewelbox.

  148. 4.) I will constantly prod the artists to see where they are and how I
  149. can
  150. help.

  152. 5.) If anyone involved is in Southern California, I am willing to
  153. produce your
  154. contribution fre of charge. Below I have a link to my webpage which has
  155. samples of my own work in realaudio.

  157. 6.) Since nobody volunteered for this, I have already begun work on my

  159. of the obligatory cover "Safety Dance".

  161. I don't care if this ends up being a marketed CD, a list CD, or just an
  162. MP3
  163. site. It is my intention to put together a decent-sized collection of
  164. MWH
  165. tributes. That's all. We can decide later the best way to make this
  166. available.

  168. There are people on this list who have better musical connections than
  169. me, and
  170. even I can get this released and distributed, but I also realise that we
  171. are
  172. producing an honest tribute here, and not necessarily a money-making
  173. product.
  174. I do, however, feel that this project is important. If nobody objects, I
  175. will
  176. see this happen.

  234. Does this mean I'm officially off?
  235. As I said in a previous post, I'm still willing to take care of it if
  236. it's not a commercial release (list only). I have access to all the
  237. tools needed (like many other members of the list I assume). They only
  238. thing missing is the actual songs... Except for Flat Stanley who were
  239. the only ones to follow trough. I have plenty of time to do this except
  240. if it's for a commercial release (to much legal hassle involved). What
  241. could be done is first a list version completed CD that could be used to
  242. shop around record companies. If we found one that sees it as a
  243. commercially viable project, they'll take care of the legal aspects...
  244.  
  245. As far as who was in it, I allready posted this informations earlier
  246. (not very long ago) and all the people involved were members of the
  247. lists. From those, only Angie manifested herself (and Flat Stanley of
  248. course). So all of the others are either not on the list anymore, or not
  249. interested anymore, or on a very busy schedule that prevent them from
  250. writing back to the list.

  252. As for Flat Stanley's submission, I think the correct thing to do is for
  253. me to comply to whatever John (Kriens)wants me to do with his tapes.

  255. I for one would love to see this project see lights and I'm willing to
  256. put energies in it.

  279. to start the mp3 controversy again)
  280. While I like the idea of a whole package with CD and art, perhaps the music
  281. is the primary concern.

  336. I don't play any isntruments (although I wish I knew the piano and synth and
  337. had the equipment and know-how to remix) and you would never ever want to
  338. hear me sing!  But, like in the past, I've offered--and still am :) -- to
  339. help in the graphic design of the covers (of the CD) if need be.  I remember
  340. one was already proposed (and voted on?) with a similar design to the
  341. Beatles' "Yellow Submarine".  Are we still using that concept?

  410. Wow!!!!  After reading Matt McCarthy's post about the Stefan's update to the
  411. "official" MWH site, I went to see what the update was.  And I was thrilled
  412. by what I read there.  From what Stefan is saying about the Big Mountain
  413. 2000 album, it sounds very exciting.  16 new songs, and with a targeted
  414. release date somewhere before Christmas 2000.  Way too cool!!!   Plus,
  415. Stefan mentioned that MWH shirts should be available by the end of the year
  416. as well.  :)

  441. So how about someone (I vote for Richard) hosts a
  442. private web space where cover songs (completed or not)
  443. can be posted. Those of us working on songs can have
  444. them posted here for all of us lists members to listen
  445. to, and work on them at our own pace. Then, when
  446. enough of us feel that there is a goodly amount of
  447. (completed) songs, we concentrate on pressing CDs?
  448.   
  449. .....Being hounded to get something done is not
  450. exactly a musician's favourite thing. I am sure that
  451. all who are working on a project are doing so as
  452. quickly as they are capable.

  454. it comes together.....

  528. curious about the progress of any of the songs. It is in Realaudio
  529. format, but my provider doesn't support streaming media yet so you'll

  533. original, but I intend to mess with it a lot more. I intend to revamp
