Subject: (hats) Cover CD reality
I hate to be the voice of doom. Wait, no actually I
kinda like it. Deep, booming, powerful--that's the
voice of doom. When doom speaks, no one asks, "Who
said that?"
Unfortunately, the cover CD is not going to happen
unless someone takes charge of it and shepherds it
through to completion. People mean well, but it
becomes difficult to follow through if it's not the
thing in the forefront of your mind and there's no
indication that anyone cares if you actually deliver
what you promised.
The person in charge of the CD doesn't have to
actually do anything musical, they have to get on
people's cases about when they promised to deliver
material and continue to follow up until either the
songs are received or the submitters formally back
out. When submitters back out, they need to solicit
for more submissions and repeat the process. Then,
once all of the songs are in, they keep tabs on the
person or persons who are actually burning the CDs,
creating the packaging, and whatever else, until the
thing is *done*.
My band, Flat Stanley, was the only one to actually
deliver anything for the first attempt at this. We
actually didn't get off our asses to do anything until
it looked like we were going to miss the first project
deadline. We were involved in a similar project to
produce a fan-created OMD cover CD a few years before
that. It was also plagued by people saying they'd
submit songs and then never did. It took 2 years for
that to actually get done, and I wasn't too sure it
was actually going to happen until I finally held it
in my hand.
The only way this effort will see the light of day is
for someone to take on the task of hounding, hounding,
hounding the submitters and production people until
the product is out the door.
So, this is a prime opportunity for someone to step up
and say, "I'm willing to be an asshole and hound and
badger everyone who makes a commitment to this project
until it is complete." 'Cause that's what it's gonna
take. If no one steps up to do it, then the project
is going to fail again.
I know I'm not the person to do this 'cause I don't
have enough free time anymore. I just want to lay out
what it is going to take for this effort to be a
success. I'm not trying to be negative, just
realistic on the effort that will be required. I
really want to see this disk get made.
Gettin' off the soapbox now. Bye.

I am REALLY SORRY about all the email that went missing over the last week.
I was in Seattle for a conference and thought I had set things up so people
would get their messages bounced back to them when something went wrong, but
apparently I screwed up the configuration somehow.
Apologies for all the inconvenience.

Subject: (hats) I'm willing to be the ASSHOLE!!! Re Cover CD reality
I have a very strong desire to see this disk completed. I am willing to
be the
asshole who makes sure it becomes a reality. I outlined something
before, but
in case it didn't go through:
1.) If Claude will send me the one song and the contact information for
all of
the artists who have signed on so far, I will begin prodding to
establish
realistic and efficient deadlines as well as determine who is still
involved.
I will also begin this process with anyone new who signs on. (I only
have
Johans email right now). I need to know everyone involved.
2.) I will put up a webpage and give email information regarding the
progress
of the disk (Including samples of the songs completed).
3.) I will accept any and all artwork, or enlist the aid of anyone who
would
like to do the layout for a jewelbox.
4.) I will constantly prod the artists to see where they are and how I
can
help.
5.) If anyone involved is in Southern California, I am willing to
produce your
contribution fre of charge. Below I have a link to my webpage which has
samples of my own work in realaudio.
6.) Since nobody volunteered for this, I have already begun work on my
version
of the obligatory cover "Safety Dance".
I don't care if this ends up being a marketed CD, a list CD, or just an
MP3
site. It is my intention to put together a decent-sized collection of
MWH
tributes. That's all. We can decide later the best way to make this
available.
There are people on this list who have better musical connections than
me, and
even I can get this released and distributed, but I also realise that we
are
producing an honest tribute here, and not necessarily a money-making
product.
I do, however, feel that this project is important. If nobody objects, I
will
see this happen.
So Claude, send me at least the info and I'll get on the ball. I have
nothing
to do during the week, anyway.

Does this mean I'm officially off?
As I said in a previous post, I'm still willing to take care of it if
it's not a commercial release (list only). I have access to all the
tools needed (like many other members of the list I assume). They only
thing missing is the actual songs... Except for Flat Stanley who were
the only ones to follow trough. I have plenty of time to do this except
if it's for a commercial release (to much legal hassle involved). What
could be done is first a list version completed CD that could be used to
shop around record companies. If we found one that sees it as a
commercially viable project, they'll take care of the legal aspects...
As far as who was in it, I allready posted this informations earlier
(not very long ago) and all the people involved were members of the
lists. From those, only Angie manifested herself (and Flat Stanley of
course). So all of the others are either not on the list anymore, or not
interested anymore, or on a very busy schedule that prevent them from
writing back to the list.
As for Flat Stanley's submission, I think the correct thing to do is for
me to comply to whatever John (Kriens)wants me to do with his tapes.
I for one would love to see this project see lights and I'm willing to
put energies in it.
Waiting for more voices out there...
Claude

I can only add my voice as a consumer, one who wants the music. I am glad to
see the project still gasping.
I believe Richard Holdman stated something to the effect that it need not be
in CD format to be distributed to the list members. (I say this trying not
to start the mp3 controversy again)
While I like the idea of a whole package with CD and art, perhaps the music
is the primary concern.
Either way I look forward to expanding my music interest to the bands /
members who become part of this.
What happened to the Spring release of the new MWH compilation? I remain
anxious to be the first to have this CD.

my studio has been in a state of a mess ove rthe past few months as

I'd only be interested in the product if it was released to list members
on CD - MP3 & tape dont interest me at all... why settle for inferior
sound quality? no point...

I don't play any isntruments (although I wish I knew the piano and synth and
had the equipment and know-how to remix) and you would never ever want to
hear me sing! But, like in the past, I've offered--and still am :) -- to
help in the graphic design of the covers (of the CD) if need be. I remember
one was already proposed (and voted on?) with a similar design to the
Beatles' "Yellow Submarine". Are we still using that concept?

Reiterating what I said in a previous posting to the list, I believe
that Claude is the one who should handle this project for us for two
reasons:
1) It was his idea in the first place.
2) He is most qualified to handle the task.
Anyway, it's good to see more enthusiasm generated for this
project!!!

Wow!!!! After reading Matt McCarthy's post about the Stefan's update to the
"official" MWH site, I went to see what the update was. And I was thrilled
by what I read there. From what Stefan is saying about the Big Mountain
2000 album, it sounds very exciting. 16 new songs, and with a targeted
release date somewhere before Christmas 2000. Way too cool!!! Plus,
Stefan mentioned that MWH shirts should be available by the end of the year
as well. :)
Thanks for the message Matt,
and thanks to Stefan for keeping the site updated.

Subject: (hats) Cover CD- a suggestion
So how about someone (I vote for Richard) hosts a
private web space where cover songs (completed or not)
can be posted. Those of us working on songs can have
them posted here for all of us lists members to listen
to, and work on them at our own pace. Then, when
enough of us feel that there is a goodly amount of
(completed) songs, we concentrate on pressing CDs?
.....Being hounded to get something done is not
exactly a musician's favourite thing. I am sure that
all who are working on a project are doing so as
quickly as they are capable.
Please all be patient. It will come together when
it comes together.....

I have put a very rough version of the Safety Dance on my site for those
curious about the progress of any of the songs. It is in Realaudio
format, but my provider doesn't support streaming media yet so you'll
have to wait for it to download.
I have a lot of plans for this song. Right now it is similar to the
original, but I intend to mess with it a lot more. I intend to revamp
the drums and change a few of the other parts. For now, however, enjoy
the song as it is. You can download it at:
