Subject: (hats) Reporting to Ebay!?! Get real......
I do not post often to this list, but the latest discussion regarding
"reporting" the Hats boot sale on Ebay makes me break my silence. Why in
the world would someone want to report this to Ebay?! As strange as it
may sound, not every MWH fan in the world knows about the list and had
the chance to get their hands on the wonderful CD's that were released
over the last year or so. This should be clear in that there are bidders
on the disk. I think those that are so eager to tattle on the seller
should put themselves in the shoes of the lucky soul who found the item
listed on Ebay. Have we forgotten the thrill of getting the CD in the
mail and listening to the first "new" MWH in many years. Why are we in a
rush to spoil that chance for someone else?
Granted, the person selling the disk may have broken the spirit of the
project, but the disk's are illegal to begin with so what is the big
gripe now? I find it rather sad that as we clutch onto our 10 plus
illegal MWH CD's, we bemoan some lucky person the chance to buy one.
Heaven knows if the person selling the disk had something to offer that
we did not have already, all of us would be scrambling to win that bid
and there would be little talk of reporting the person to anyone. So why
don't we slow down a little on the running to Ebay and complaining about
the potential transaction. Sit back, put on one of the MWH boot's in
your collection and be glad that yet another fan of MWH will get the
chance to enjoy some great music.
James

CD of rare recordings and unreleased material such as this...
Heaven 17 (the other ones) have just released their first live album via the
net with just 1000 copies available (see www.heaven17.com ), so these things
are possible. Whether there's any financial benefit for the band or it's
just a goodwill gesture I don't know. I guess in this case they thought it
worthy of release regardless, which is one of Stefan's concerns about some
of MWH's unreleased stuff.

This is the first time I've posted on this list and I've been a member maybe
about 3 months now. I'm basically just a member to get any actual news that
has to do with MWH. When I read that people were angry with a bootleg being
on eBay, it made me angry. Someone said something to the effect of "if you're
not on the list, you're not a good enough fan." That pushed me from angry to
furious. Like James said, not every fan knows about the list. If the real
reason that people are angry that this is on eBay is cause it gives the
chance for non-"real"-fans to get it, I might as well leave the list cause I
don't want to be a "real" fan. I know this was basically just rambling and I
didn't add anything new, but I wanted to throw in my opinion.
Jeff.

While I am of two minds about the eBay thing, let's definitely not get
elitist here.
I think we should feel sorry for the people who are forced to pay $30-$40 for
a disc when we got it at cost, but it wasn't so long ago people on this list
were just as willing to pay $100, $200 or more for a Folk or Rhythm cd
(before they were re-released) -- And I, a die-hard fan, certainly considered
selling my copies of the original Folk and Rhythm when they were fetching
that amount just because I couldn't believe I could get that much (I didn't
sell, of course).
As for the guy selling it, I am irritated some true fan lost his chance to
buy it at a great deal so this guy could make a profit. But, like someone
recently said on the list, maybe they had no clue it (or this list) existed
and eBay is their only chance at ever finding this rare MWH material.
That said, I'll go back to lurking.

Subject: (hats) ebay cd removed
I've noticed that the listee fan cd has been removed from ebay.
When you think about it.... why should a fan auction off a cd that he or =
she received exclusively from a member of the list? The person who put the =
cd's together did so at cost. If he had known that a person was going to =
sell the cd I'm sure he wouldn't make it available to them at such a great =
price.
It is just as easy, if not easier, to join the list than it is to sign up =
for ebay. The cd could then be made availble for sale or trade, at cost =
plus shipping etc... to other listees who weren't able to get the cd's =
when they were available.
This would be the politically correct way of making the cd available.
On the other hand there was recently a collection of 24 Crowded House club =
cd's auctioned off on ebay for close to $3,000 by a retailer who collected =
them. This was promoted on the Crowded House list which frowns upon those =
who would like cdr's of the cd's that were available before they joined =
the official fan club (and the fan club refuses to make more available. =
Presumably to drive up the value of the cd's originally pressed and bother =
those who couldn't afford them as a side effect). So who knows? Higher =
demand =3D higher value.
Looks like Stephan has inadvertantly driven up the value of MWH's fan cds =
so we should expect to see more cd's up for auction by fans who aren't =
exactly big enough fans to pass up on making a few bucks. Thus penalizing =
fans who just want to hear the music.

Well, I don't know if I had anything to do with this or not, but after I
suggested it on the list, I wrote a letter to Stefan and Ivan yesterday
addressing several subjects including the bootlegs and the list and
suggested they release a limited pressing or rare/unreleased material.
The following appeared on the website today under the heading of "Late
Breaking News on Bootlegs, Rhythm of Youth... !!!!":
=====
OK, here's the deal.
Men Without Hats will be releasing a compilation of re-mastered old and
/or unreleased songs. Some of these songs have NEVER been heard by anyone
except Ivan & Stefan! This should be available towards the end of the year
and will only be available from this website. This CD will also contain
some of the very best songs from the Rhythm of Youth and Folk of the 80's
I & III CDs.
You can also look forward to seeing some t-shirts.
If anyone wants to contribute some artwork or a list of songs for this CD,
they are welcome to send it here
=====
What else can you say but "Woohoo!" :) Listening to "The Very Best of Men
Without Hats" at work this is...

Subject: (hats) 11 tracks on Folk3?
Hi all!
This is about Folk3 from 'the official mwh page':
- ---
At the end of the record, if you let it keep playing, Mother's Opinion
will come back with a stereo flange on it. Problem was, no one bothered to
tell the printing pressers that there were in fact 11 songs, not 10. So
some of the early copies are missing this piece!
- ---
Weee, it seems *I* missed *2* songs, not just one. I used to believe that
there are 9 songs on Folk3. I know that some copies list extended 'Where
Do The Boys Go?', might Stefan be referring to this?
