Subject: (hats) a little confusion
So the one thing I've always been a little confused with is the
whole FOTE I and Freeways. Did the Freeways LP come out in 85....5 years
after its original release?
Was this a remix of the one on the FOTE LP?
And in the Freeways Live '85 in Montreal, why are they promoting
Freeways and not Fote III.
Did the Freeways LP sell at all?
Can you still get it? (other than the bootleg)
One more question....what is this new project Ivan is working
on...with Rational Youth.
One more question...sorry...but on the bootlegs, we have remixes
of PGTW and Moonbeam from the singles. Were there any other singles that
have remixes on them that we could somehow obtain? Any chance of getting
the IVAN singles on there?
Ok...I've fed the group some questions.

<<So the one thing I've always been a little confused with is the whole FOTE

Apparently this is the case as the Freeways "EP" is copyrighted 1985. I'm
not sure about the history of the different mixes of Freeways (the song),
but the Freeways "EP" was the first time they were released.
<<Was this a remix of the one on the FOTE LP?>>
I don't think they were remixed, but Antartica is slightly different on the
original FOTE...it fades out completely as opposed to the abrupt ending that
it has on Freeways.
<<Did the Freeways LP sell at all? Can you still get it? (other than the

I had never seen it in any store until last weekend on a trip to Vancouver
B.C. Where I found a pristine copy in a used record store and just about
fainted. I may be wrong, but it is my impression that this cassette is quite
rare.

Here is a message I got from someone about my site. I told him to go ahead=

record his band doing safety dance so we could all hear it. I will let you=

and when he sends it to me.

Dear Richard,
thanks for a great site!!!
The band I used to play in (I=92m a guitarist/singer) used to play Safety
Dance about 15 years ago. I split the band three years ago, and next
saturday the band (that=92s been together for 25 years) plays the last
gig, and the guys asked me to sit in for a set and do "Safety Dance" and
some other songs.
We have a rehearsal tomorrow, so I was trying to chase down this song as
I didn=92t remember all the changes and words. Yahoo > music search > Men
Without Hats links and there I was!! Safety Dance in about four
different live versions. Great!
We might record that last gig, so if you want me to, I can send you a
mp3 file of our version.
Thanks and keep up the great work.
Best regards,
Rob Terstall

In 1980, MWH released FOTE part I. 4 songs on an 10 inches vinyl.
After the success of ROY (who was suppose to be named FOTE part II until one
month before the release), and FOTE part II, Marc Durand (former MWH manager)
decided to release the very first vinyl with different remixes of Freeway.

I own "The Very Best of Men Without Hats".
It is a compilation of some songs of "Folk Of The 80's III" and "Rhythm Of
Youth".
It is (C) and (P) 1997 by CMC Records under license of Oglio Records.
Nothing new, but a must to have.
The Cover Art is not much different from "The COllection".
The MWH Logo is a little bit smaller and the background is a little bit more
orange.
Very interesting are the Words on the inside which are:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dancing and singing they came back in 1982, who were these strangers without
headwear causing the floors to move to a most unusual swaying rhythm?
"You can dance if you want to..." of course we could, we didn't need them to
tell us that, but what exactly was, or indeed is The Safetay Dance and does
it involve the wearing of a condom or was it a more serious anti nuclear
message as hinted in the video?
Very little is written in the history books about the band from canada, who
paved the way for alternative rock from this part of the world - would
alanis morisette have received the same support without them?
Canada after all isn't renowned for it's international names in Rock, Bryan
Adams, Celine Dion, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell are not many considering the
Counry's proximity to the USA. So I put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and
puffing on my pipe this is what i discovered:
Men without hats were formed in Montreal - Canada in 1980, the brainchild of
singer Ivan and drummer Jeremy Arrobas, not the most usual set up for a
group - one singer and one drummer so thats where the synth machine came in
very handy and also explains their rather distinctive sound.
Men Without Hats' first release was an EP on their own label titled "FOT
80's", not only did this grab a lot of attention in their homeland, Stiff
Records in London, well known for their love of the creative, also released
it in Britain as a single along with an edited version of "Antarctica".
It's a highly priced collector's item these days. Just after this Jeremy
decided he had had enough of life in the fast lane of pop stardomand quit,
leaving Ivan to write the songs and work with brothers Stephan and Colin
Doroschuk joined by Allan McCarthy on drums.
In 1983 MWH released the annoyingly catchy singe "Safety Dance", whoch
became a huge hit both in the clubs and on the radio, reaching No. 3 in the
USA and No. 6 in The UK, not only launching the group in Europe but a new
label - Statik Records too. Following the success of "Safety Dance" their
debut album "Rhythm Of Youth" saw the light of day; it was a mayor success
in the USA, reaching No. 14 in the Billbord Chart.
Three more singles "Living in China", "I Got The Message" and the full
version of "Antarctica" were released from the album, all of which have
become cult classics.
MWH's second album "Folk Of The 80's Part III" (whatever happened to Part
II?) was incredibly well received by the rock critics and their fans alike
and contained the hit single "Where Do The Boys Go?". All this was pre CD
and a picture disc of the second album is also reported to exist on vinyl.
The CD you are holding marks the first time that "ROY" and "FOEIII" has ever
been released as a double package, in fact neither album has ever been
properly released on CD before.
A strictly limited edition of 500 copies of each was made in the UK in the
late 80's - today they sell for between $700 - $1000 each.
Treasure your copy of two of the finest albums ever produced in canada -
maybe one day this too will become a valuable collectors item!
Aouch, think this was my largest EMail ever written.
For those who didn't know the cover inside - text, hope you enjoyed it.
For those who did know the text, think you read it again...
OK, best regards

This release was issued in the Far East last year, and is the first two
albums without Mother's Opionion, Ban the Game, the Great Ones Remember
Reprise and one other (I like, I think). A couple of things firstly I
have never seen any mention of Antartica on the Stiff Label, I have read
a couple of discographies of Stiff records, and none mention it., has
anyone ever seen it ? Also if anybody wants my copy of FOTE3 on CD for
$700 it's their's !
Also this month Men Without Hats are featured in the UK's Q magazine in
the 'Where are they now' section featuring an interview with Ivan and is
very, well fairly interesting. Apparently Collin Doroschuk worked in a
circus for a while washing dishes for a 'dose of reality'. The thing
about Where are they now series in Q is that the featured artist's alway
talk up what they've been up to, so Ivan mentions he's formed the UFOria
record label but fails to say that so far it hasn't released anything.
Does anybody want me to transcibe the whole article ?

Hello MWOH FANS!!
I'm brand new to the list. I'm a big 80's music fan. I am hoping one of you
can help me with my quest to find a MWOH CD that may or may not exist.
Supposedly, Oglio records put out a 2 for 1 CD with the MWOH albums Rhythm of
Youth and Folk of the 80's on it. It did not get released in the US due to
legalities, but it has been reported that it was released outside the US. I
can find no website that sells imports that lists this CD. Can anyone tell me
if this is true, does this 2fer CD exist? If it does, can anyone help me get a
copy? I will gladly pay all costs involved or I could work a trade for some
CD that one of you are looking for. I have a CDR, and I do have some great
rare b-side comps of Swervedriver, the FIXX, the Charlatans UK, Radiohead,
Curve, Catherine Wheel, Suede to trade. Please, if anyone can give me any
info, it will be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!!

I do not know if it is availible in Canada, but I would say try giving

I was able to obtain "Sideways" & "...21st Century" through them....>8)
