I concur with your opinions of Kiss. I simply adored them in elementary
school (I'm the same age as you) and by the time they lost the makeup, I was
losing interest. I came to mock them during my "punk rock" years- there was a
Zildjian ad w/ peter Chris stating "this is serious music" that I turned into
a not-so-flattering t-shirt. After I got a little more open-minded, I
returned to listening to them and playing the music. "Firehouse" is still one
of my faves to just wail along with my guitar. A marketing exercise?
Hardly. Just 4 hardworking guys. I caught a few minutes of Jerry Cantrell
talking about how he loved Kiss and they are the reason he is in music. I
just bought a used "Kiss Meets the Phantom of The Amusement Park" (or whatever
the actual title is) video and fondly recalled when it was on network tv in
the 70s (ok, this could have been marketing...). I have seen Strutter (very
good!) and Firehouse (not as good) as they occassionally swing through here.
There is a short article about who (and what happened to them) the
replacements for the original band members were in the newest issue of Maxim
magazine. I still think it was weird that the guy from Mr. Mister was
supposed to play with them (immediately before Bruce Kubiak joined). There are
a million bands that owe a great debt to Kiss (one of them, Insane Clown Posse
was here a couple nites ago)....
Off my soapbox now,
PDK

i wish they'd use 'proper' modern analogue synths like the nord lead
instead - the JP8000 sounds thin and weedy in comparison. I'll with-hold

Subject: (hats) The Spell vs. PGTW
Myke (Lord H) writes:
>My biggest compliment for PGTW is that it's cohesive in both
>style and concept from beginning to end.
Yes, PGTW is Ivan's rock opera, much like Sgt Pepper, or Tommy. It's a
single story told consecutively through several songs of similar styles.
>My biggest complaint for The Spell is that it's "all over the board".
The Spell, to me, is more like an anthology of short stories as opposed
to a novel. Instead of telling a single story, Ivan treats us to many
stories in very different styles within the same album. On the surface,
they don't have much to do with each other. But when you put them all
together, they form a larger picture.
Each of the songs seems to me like it could be placed seamlessly onto a
prior album, and since Ivan had spanned so many styles through the
years, The Spell seems no more disjointed to me than a compilation of
random MWH songs would have seemed. Put "I Know Their Name" and "All We
Know" and "Freeways" together, and you'll also get "all over the board."
Also, being "all over the board" to me would not be a complaint. The
ability to do so attests to the artist's creativity and musical
eclecticism. The inability to stay to a single style (which Ivan can
certainly do if he wanted to) is a sign of musical immaturity. The
choice to go all over on a single album speaks of the artist's courage
and pioneering spirit, unafraid to experiment and drawn by whatever he
might find.
I wouldn't want Ivan to make another PGTW. One is enough for me. At
times, listening to it, I am whisked to another place, and I am part of
Johnny and Jenny's life (although actually they are part of ours). I
sometimes weep for the love and joy and understanding that went into it.
Other times, I find it annoying because it's all about the same thing.
Where's the variety of styles, the brave experimentation of the hats?
It's all a matter of mood, really.
And I can't blame Ivan for wanting to separate himself from his roots,
but recognizing the need to keep them. It's paradoxical that artists
want to always best their previous efforts. What was a pinnacle
yesterday becomes an expectation today and almost embarrassing tomorrow.
When I look back at my own old work, I see a lot of enthusiasm, but not
much focus. Looking at my current work, I can see a lot of maturity and
thought. When I show my work to someone, I'd prefer to show them my most
recent stuff, which has all the years of experience going into it. I
almost feel apologetic for my older stuff.

I think Ivan thought that "Off The Record" was a music show about
records. He can be hit and miss in the conversation department but
overall holds his own ground on camera. He may have had a late night
after the Whiskey Saigon performance, he looked like he could have used
a caffeine injection. I didn't get a chance to catch the whole show
(because of editing an upcoming World Cup promotion for Soccer Saturday,
Apr. 11)but will check out the tape today. Heard that the show was
bombing but, that's the way talk shows go.
I ran into Ivan coming out of the studio and only had time for quick
personal small talk has he was on his way out to the Life Channel or
something and I had to get back into edit suite.
"Off The Record" is repeated today (Tues. Apr. 7th) at Noon ET 9am PT.
...gotta run... more world cup.

Hi everyone,
I haven't been able to record Ivan on CFNY but I do have him on TSN. My
thoughts on the show, well, Ivan doesn't seem to be much of a talker! :) I
have never seen this show before (I'm not a big sports fan so the only time
I watch TSN is during the World Cup <grin>) so I might not have a good
perception of it. I think it's a talk show where celebrities come on and
give their views on sports events of the week. On today's show Ivan was on,
an actress I do not know, and a former Hamilton Wildcats football
player/wrestler. He seemed to be the only one who was energetic ont he show
:) I don't want to sound terrible but the topics were not very thought
provoking. As for Ivan, we don't learn anything about him except that he is
for women going topless (law recently passed here in Toronto)--don't take
this out of context but I think he is for it as in equality (in case youa re
wonderign what that has to do with sports events, they were referring to the
16-yr old tennis player who posed very provacatively for Sports Illustrated).
They showed a clip of the "Superbadgirls" video. I haven't seen the video
but I LIKE IT SO FAR! I like how the picture moves right to left. Hurts my
eyes but it seems to fit the song!! :)
Ivan looked different in this show than in the video where fans from this
list met Ivan in Montreal. On TSN, Ivan's face was rounder. Camera tricks?! :)
At the end, they breifly mentioned Ivan's CD and single 1972. I think there
is a mix-up, at first I thought Ivan said there was a cd single out but I
think he meant the latest track is "1972". Funny how he didn't call it
"1972 (Slippin' Away)" :)
As for the news about Ivan's new material being made on his MWH synth--LOVE
IT!!! I can't wait to hear what he creates from it!!! So UFORIA and TOX
are two different entities? I always wondered what it was. Well, can
anyone shed some more light? :)

Ivan on TV these days that, combining it with the Montreal video

How 'bout it Tom? You did a superb job on the first one. Making

many newer members of the list. And I'm starting to want to see

That's what I like about that album. One big story. And it also feels like
a musical too. I wonder if that's where the Abba influence comes from. The
best has to be "The End (of the world)" where Jenny lists the tracks.

Subject: (hats) Ivan on Life Network -interesting info! :)
I just recorded Ivan's performance/interview on a show called "Real Life" on
a channel called "The Life Network". I know I wrote so many e-mails to the
list already so I apologize for the mailbox flood <mops everything up> and
until Ivan returns to Toronto, I won't e-mail bomb the list anymore :)
Great interview. A few of our common questions were answered. Before Ivan
came on, a woman was tlaking about Easter treats :9 I love chocolate!! So
tomorrrow I will try to make thsoe chocolate Easter eggs (I have GOT to get
out more). At the end of that segment, the host, Erica Ehm (from MuchMusic
who interviewd Ivan before--you'll see her in a PGTW interview soon) asked
her if she liked Men Without Hats. She didn't know what she was talking
about so she asked while laughing "Men without hats?!" probably thinking she
is going to talk about dating and such. Too bad I asn't taping at that
point. It was funny. But onto Ivan...If you want to save it as a surprise,
delete now....
First, he performed "Open Your Eyes" to a backing track with an added
beginning which sounded like a tape being screwed up. He sings great live.
Most singers I've noticed sound too different from the studio. At the end,
he sings "Superbadgirls" but it's cut off.
On to the interview....
1. HIS MOTHER HAS SECRETS!
2. JENNY IS FOR THE FANS!
3. "SIDEWAYS" IS ANTI-BILL GATES!
4. IVAN CONCERNED OVER CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME!
5. IVAN SHOPS AT K-MART WITH HIS HAIR IN A BUN!
I'm sure Senz and other fellow Canadian hatters who caught the program would
like to share their thoughts on the above headlines :)

I goes to show you that Ivan is easier to hear in a one on one interview than in
the format of yesterdays show which is similar to "Politically Incorrect" (for
our american listees) Still, Ivan came across as a quiet person. But that is one
of the reasons why I admire him!
btw, Ivan knew what he was getting into yesterday. He knows what "Off the
Record" is! Afterall, it was on TSN!! "The SPORTS Network". He's not
stupid!! He was there to promote himself and was just being himself. I enjoyed
seeing him being honest instead of trying to fit in. Ivan is no socialite!!

I liked the fact that even with the vocal mix way out of wack his voice was
still nice to listen to. The dancers in spandix were also way out of wack but
perhaps on purpose?
> 1. HIS MOTHER HAS SECRETS!
Or Ivan knows we don't care to see him do vocal scales and is just making an
excuse!
> 3. "SIDEWAYS" IS ANTI-BILL GATES!
What he really said was that back in 1990 making electronic music was tedious
and he was tired of rebooting computers to make music. These days it's easier so
he's back to electronic music. One point he made was that the variety of sounds
available in the newest technology and the ease with which it is used allows him
great flexability. The example he used was that he could have an entire
orchestra to use when ever he needed it's sound.
> 4. IVAN CONCERNED OVER CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME!
That is true, Ivan is an accomplished piano player who plays so much that he has
to deal with the strain on his hands.
> 5. IVAN SHOPS AT K-MART WITH HIS HAIR IN A BUN!
And people recognized him too!!!!
Overall, Ivan conducted himself very well. Basically a straight forward
interview to explain who Ivan is for people who watch the show regularily
looking for cooking tips!

Myke,
Everyone will want a video so I can sure use your help once again.
:-)
I can make me an S-VHS master AND
you a VHS (high quality tape) master
Then you can make copies as good as I (and HELP).
then I will send the masters back.
What do you think, Myke?

Well, as a major contributor of the last one, you can count on my material.
I'll send everything I have. If we send all our material to you, you can
decide which is best to use. That way we get the highest quality available.
> > I was holding out for the 1972 video. What do you all think?
How about we wait a couple weeks to see what happens as a result of his new
promo efforts. Everybody keep an eye on muchmusic, as painful as that can be
these days!

Last time I was on the list there was discussion about there possibly
being a video for Freeways. Was there any confirmation or denial of
this?

Tom,
I like your idea very much! Let's do it that way. I can no longer
count how many times I've copied my MWH video collection for people
on this list.
Also, I intend to soon be in the market to buy an S-VHS VCR.
It has chroma/luma video inputs that will work beautifully with
my Commodore 128 which has chroma/luma video outputs. I want to
write programs that draw random, coloured graphic patterns and use
them as video source material for when the time comes that I can release
my entire life's collection of sound art and music on a video format.
It's kinda boring listening to a VHS tape with no picture. Since the
format supports video information as well as superb-sounding audio, I
see no sense in not creating something visual to accompany the aural.
So, with that in mind, why not make two S-VHS masters and one VHS master
so that when the time comes that I can use the better of the two, it'll
be there waiting for me?
How much do S-VHS VCRs cost these days?

A BIG-mouthed, proud, flag-waving, American contributor, you mean! ;-)
Of course, I jest.
Thanks!
Myke
P.S. How much do S-VHS VCRs normally cost these days?
I'm about to receive an offer for a job in the next month
that will increase my annual income by leaps and bounds.
The S-VHS VCR and the PeeCees, Macs, and Amigas (all to run
Unix, btw! :-) ) will soon follow. Then I'll really be
able to do neat and nifty things for the fine folks on
this list. Hey Claude! I've got tapes of the two KISS
concerts I and my wife attended in 1996. Want copies on CD-R?
Of course, I jest again. :-)

I have a few things to mention. First, yesterday's "Real Life"
appearance was great. With commercials edited out, he had about 15
minutes of air time total. I think he should have performed
"superbadgirls" first because, at least in the city I live in, it is
being played a LOT on the radio and people would have been able to put a
face to the song, and known what album to find it on. As mentioned, he
DID perform "superbadgirls", but only about 45 seconds or 1 minute of it
was on the air...it was cut off in the middle of the first chorus.
Also a great interview...I have always loved Erica Ehm. In my opinion,
the "Open Your Eyes" performance was weak, another reason I wish "sbg"
was performed first, although I like OYE better... hmm...
In reference to the section I quoted above, I have just put together a
little "request website" for Muchmusic and mailed them the URL. They
have a daily all-request show (just recently re-named "MUCH ON DEMAND")
and they play viewers requests by snail mail, email, fax, phone, etc....
They play website requests from time to time, so I thought it wouldn't
hurt to do this. I asked for superbadgirls or 1972 (since I already
have Open your Eyes on tape). So anybody who gets Muchmusic, watch for
this!
Also, is it just me or at the beginning of Monday's "Off the Record"
show, did the host say Ivan would be performing "later on in the show"?
I could swear I heard him say that, but there was no performance... I
will have to watch the tape again to see if I was just hearing things...
;)
And one last thing.... last night right before "pop up video" started
on Muchmusic, there was a 30 second commercial for THE SPELL album! Too
cool!! They showed clips from the OPE and SBG videos, and you hear part
of 1972. I must try to get this on tape! He's really doing a lot of
promotion lately!
That's all for today!
Colin
:)
