Subject: (hats) The upcoming event. What else?
Writing as someone who is primarily a lurker on this list, I, for one, am
very grateful to Francis, Angie and all the others who are making the Ivan
Concert for Fans a real event. I look forward to that trip.
I am sorry to read of the hurt feelings, though. They are best avoided by
clear and frequent communication. Also, it's best to clear them up off the
list.
I also want to thank Laura for her work on the shirts and all the folks
who made the fan CD's. (Even though I have only discs 1-3 so far.) From
experience, I know what kind of effort goes into something like that.
I hope I speak for a large portion of those of us who read the list and
lurk and who take comfort in knowing that there are other fans out there
like us who keep this piece of our culture alive.

I have a copy of the (original) vinyl release. Its catalogue no. is BBC
ROCK HOUR #442 and it has A FLOCK OF SAEGULLS on the other side (nice
concert by the way). The accompanying sheet says:
LW(London Wavelength)'s Broadcast Week Of October 16, 1983
Just a typo or was there some time-travel involved when the concert was
recorded during the 1984 tour?

Are the tracklistings of the fanclub (this list) CDs available in some

Hi, just in case you guys were not aware, the possibility of an opening
act is no longer a possibility. I, for one, am a little disappointed.
But Francis explained to me that Ivan's tour manager said an opening act
would "ruin the show" or something like that. I'll get the exact quote
later. He said Ivan never has an opening act. (Which makes sense
because Ivan often *is* opening act.) But at our show, he will be
Headlining of course, and if we can get the rest of the brothers, it
will be a full-fledged Men Without Hats concert!!!
I'm really glad things are coming together and the dream is becoming a
reality! The thing *I* want is to meet all of you in person finally!
Angie :-)

Subject: (hats) Meeting recollections
Hey, fellow Hatters. Now that Francis wrote in with the details of the
meeting, here is what I recall:
*As Angie has already alluded to, Dave Byrne did not like the idea of an
opening act. He said it was too risky for Ivan to have to follow a
'potentially amateurish opening'. Of all the ideas Francis gave him, he
was the most adamant about this one. Sorry folks.
*Dave Byrne (rightfully) viewed the concert as a 'musical book signing',
which is to say because of the special and rare circumstances of the
concert, it would have to be a must to get Ivan (and possibly brothers) to
mingle with us (and sign a carload of stuff!). Does anybody out there mind
this??
*My sense is that the videotape/CD idea might be a tough sell. However,
something tells me we'll be able to videotape only.
*The brothers' participation: Dave Byrne said that he will try to pitch
this to Ivan. In the very least, he suggested that the brothers show up
simply to mingle with us.
*Venue: It's really our choice, unless Ivan and company don't particularly
like a certain venue for sound reasons (no pun intended).
*Francis made it crystal clear that we were not there to make money, but to
organize a very special event in honour of MWH and, of course, Ivan. The
fact that list-members would finally get to meet each other makes this
concert all that much more exciting and special. Dave Byrne acknowledged
this sentiment.
*Money issues: Francis has already discussed this with you. It's now
important to keep the promises we made a few months ago.
*David Byrne liked the whole idea, and found everything 'kosher'. He
described it as very good for Ivan and his career. (You know, something
they can put on a bio and such.) Publicity-wise, Dave Byrne did not wish
to lump this special show with the regular tour. As such, there will be
little publicity as far as attracting Ivan's other fans are concerned. He
wants the show to remain a private affair. This does not mean that there
absolutely will not be publicity during the show (for articles and such).
*Shirts will most probable be sold, but Dave Byrne does not want to
commercialize the whole affair. The sale of shirts will be more discreet
than at usual concert affairs.
That's all I can remember for now. If you have any questions, don't
hesitate to contact Francis and/or Angie and they'll be more than happy to
answer.
Burying the hatchet for good,
Vince

Thanks Frank! That puts this whole deal in a new light.
Are we really sure that it's from the '84 tour now?
Do you find any other clues as to whether or not it could have
been a typo? 1983 actually would have been much more appropriate
for A Flock Of Seagulls and Men Without Hats both than 1984.

Subject: (hats) Booking your trips
Hi, I just want everybody to know a few things before you all run to your
travel agents.
First of all, no contract has been signed yet, so wait until one is. From
what we have learned, it appears that some of the suggestions for the show
have to clear Ivan's desk with the seal of approval, then a contract will be
drawn up. I have instructed Francis to e-mail the list with the contract
terms. If you want it word-for-word, we can do that. I asked him to do that
for me, anyway. Francis will sign it as the representative of the Hats list
when it clears everyone's approval.
Second, since the concert will take place on the weekend of Montreal's annual
Jazz Festival, you will need to book your rooms as far in advance as you
possibly can. I suggest going to AAA or CAA and asking for the free travel
book for Quebec, where the local lodgings and their prices are listed. You
can contact the Montreal Department of Tourism also, if you have not already
done so.
I have asked my friend Al to write a brief message to the list describing the
Jazz Festival for those of you who are not familiar with it. With that going
on, PLUS our private show, it will make for a really memorable weekend!!!
OK, more news and info when it becomes available!

Most of you probably already know about the on-line booking of flights,
hotels, etc. The two ones I have used are Expedia and Travelocity. Both
use the same system (Sabre) that travel agents use and work great. I
personally use Travelocity whenever possible because Expedia is powered by
Microsoft and god know they already have enough $$$. I suggest checking
them out for your Montreal plans.

Angie was talking about a contract. There is no "official" contract. Only
for the deposit. As soon as I know the exact amount, I'm gonna tell you. I

Of course it all depends on the exact date and how much plane tickets

am currently residing in Hootieville (Columbia), South Carolina, but can drive
anywhere to meet up with people. I am going to be out of town for several
days, but if this sounds like a decent idea, please let me know. Thanks.

Baby, let me tell you that is one *LOOONG* road trip! When Trena and
I did it last summer for the Rock Sans Frontieres concert, it was 18
hours from Raleigh, NC! I'm getting too old to try that again!
If people do want to split the driving, though, by the time June
rolls around, I may have forgotten the horrors of driving through
Washington DC at one o'clock in the morning and might be convinced to
once again gas up the Menwithouthats Party Van (a Mazda MPV, for
those of you who missed the joke last year). And this area actually
is a pretty good mustering point for NC, TN, SC, and GA. Oh, god, I
think I am talking myself into doing this again. Trena, stop me!!!!!
See everyone soon!!!!

Vince spoke of burying the hatchet . . . Steve's joke was really
"Just as long as [the hatchet isn't buried] in Angie's brain."
It took me a minute to figure it out, too - here's an instance when
a little bit *more* of the original post might have been included.

Hello to all,
I'm glad to see that all is well in the happy world of MWH land. I had my
doubts about many things, but all the volitle situations have now righted
themselves, and it seems that we have ourselves a concert! Yippee!
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, as I'm sure a few of you out
there share in my woe... but I am counting on those who do attend to bring
back wonderful stories and a great recording/video documentation.
I had a thought. What if while all of you were gathered in one location,
you got a video clip of each member saying a few things. This way, most
of the hat list members will have a picture to accompany an email address.
I'd love to see who I'm writing to! All of us that can't attend should
send in a self recorded videotape, and we could edit it all together...
and make one spanking cool collection. Any thoughts on this?
Nathan

Hey all;
I see a lot of notes about booking trips, but I didn't see an actual date
mentioned (though it is supposedly the same weekend as a Jazz Festival) --
Maybe I just missed it in the many emails.
Anyway, can someone let me know what the proposed date is?
Thanks! (and looking forward to the trip)

If you like the idea, I could put a page on the web, listing all people
attending the concert, with how and when they will be arriving, from wher=
e,
where and how long they will be staying and their e-mail address. This wa=

people may more efficiently make arrangements for this great event (shoul=

Take care all

For a long time now I started something similar to that but simpler. It i=
s
called the who's who list. (URL:
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/3136/whoswho_mwh.html ) I aske=
d
people to send me a photo and I put it on the list (in a cool ID card). T=
he
response has been very quite. The strange thing is, I started a similar t=
hing
on two other lists (Gentle Giant and Marillion) and the reaction is
overwhelming. Maybe if you set a good example by sending in your picture,
other hatters will follow...
wishfully thinking

currently in my office I can't look up the A Flock Of Seagulls
track-listing, but will mail it soon.
All the best,

for their part all they'd have to do is to plug a DAT machine into the
spare stereo outputs of the mixing desk - thats all! And we've shown
that our fan CD efforts are far better than some of the amateurish ones
available for other bands... I mean, we've got more gear than Ivan has

Hi everyone, welcome aboard flight 13....I mean, I just called Quebec
Tourism (1-800-363-7777) and asked for a book about Montreal and it's
attractions and hotels/lodges/etc with prices for 1998. They told me the
book isn't out yet but it will be available for mid April and that I should
receive it by the end of April. For those of you in the US, I don't think
that 800 number will work. I think 1-514-555-1212 may work (I don't know if
it will). It is like a 411 for 800 numbers. Ask for Quebec Tourism.
The very kind lady on the phone (with a beautiful accent!) also gave me the
information line for the Montreal Jazz Festival; 1-888-515-0515.
Bye all!
