Ralph/Claude,
I take by the absence of replies from either of you that my mails
haven`t been getting to you. Now my Hats mailing is sorted now, you
should be able to reply direct to this mail and get through OK. My
e-mail address hasn`t changed as far as I`m aware, but our IT dept have
had a ton of problems since we moved to our new offices so that could
well be the cause.
Anyway, after some messing around on both my Exchange and Unix servers,

Can we have a CD-Recording hook-up? Instead of transferring the video tape to
CD, we could just record it live :)

Hey Folks,
Been a Hats fan since day one. Have almost all the vinyls, singles, and
CDs. Bought my first CD player back in 1985, along with Rhythm and Folk III
on disc. I attended not only the Folk Of The 80's tour at the Centre
Sportif in 1984 but the 1985 Old Port and Spectrum Freeways Tour as well. I
even had the chance to catch myself full face in the video. In the fall of
1990 I caught the "new" Hats at Foufounes with John Kastner, Mitsou, Felix
Matte, and Away. Just saw Ivan open for Duran at Metropolis in December,
pretty fuckin' cool. Lookin' forward to meeting other fans and trading info
and stories about the Hats. I'd also love to hear a copy of the LIVE Tour
from 1983.
All The Best,
Bobby

Oh, I love stuff like this!
Mine are, in no particular order:
1) QUEEN - "Queen II"
Magical, musical, brilliant, camp, powerful... One of the few
vinyl albums I've ever had to replace due to extensive play.
2) EBN-OZN - "Feeling Cavalier"
Fun, surprisingly complex techno-pop that was criminally underrated.
"AEIOU Sometimes Y" is a work of pop GENIUS. I love quirky music!
3) JELLYFISH - "Spilt Milk"
The greatest pop album of the 90's. There is so much to listen to
on this disc: bubblegum, harmonies, soaring guitars... amazing.
4) MILES DAVIS - "Kind Of Blue"
I just discovered this album last fall. It's one of the few perfect
albums I've ever listened to. There's nothing else like it.
5) PRINCE - "Lovesexy"
This was released during a pivotal point in my life. And the musical
message just can't be ignored. "This is not music... this is a trip."
NEAR-MISSES:
Men Without Hats - "Pop Goes The World"
Prince - "Purple Rain"
The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds"
Queen - "A Night At The Opera"
Cornershop - "When I Was Born For The 7th Time"
Silver Sun - "Silver Sun"
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
Yes - "The Yes Album"
A Flock Of Seagulls - "Listen"
George Michael - "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1"

Subject: Re: (hats) survey
It certainly was hard to pare this down to my top 5 albums, but here
they are, and why:
5. They Might Be Giants: Flood. 1990.
Group: TMBG nasally mixes humor and oddity with bouncy accordion
music.
Album: This is their best album, IMHO. Almost no dud songs on it.
Best Song: "We Want a Rock"
4. Jazz Butcher (Conspiracy): Bloody Nonsense. 1986.
Group: JBC is a literate Brit pop group with excellent songwriting.
Album: This compilation album was the first of theirs I heard, and
helped me in lonely times.
Best Song: "President Reagan's Birthday Present"
3. Men Without Hats: Folk of the '80s (Part III). 1984.
Group: MWH combines moderne dancing with aggressive wisdom.
Album: Ivan takes a more serious thoughtful turn with this
meaningful album.
Best Song: "I Know Their Name"
2. King: Bittersweet. 1985?
Group: King is a synthpop group with bizarre imagery and fantastic
song titles.
Album: This second and final album was truly bittersweet. I elate
and cry.
Best Song: "2 M.B." (...and I still don't know what 2 M.B. means)
1. Ed's Redeeming Qualities: It's All Good News. 1991.
Group: ERQ makes quirky ukulele, violin, and bongo music that makes
you laugh, cry, and think.
Album: This second album touches my heart and stimulates my mind the
most.
Best Song: "Lighthouse"

Subject: (hats) Idea for opening act
Hi, Hatters,
The discussion that's been going on about the opening act for the Ivan
fan club show has given me an idea. Here it is. Since there is a MWH
covers CD being put together, and most of the people involved are going
to be at the concert, why not have the various groups (or some subset of
them) do their Hats covers as the opening act. We could set it up like
so everyone uses the same microphones, amps, and drum kit, but brings
their own instruments (keys, guitars, and basses) up with them. This
would allow us to transitition between artists quite quickly (this is the
same idea they use at most open mike nights).
This would give us the advantage of an opening act that we wouldn't have
to pay. People would already know the songs. People would already know
the artists and the interpretations of the songs since the CD would be
readily available to list members. Finally, it would keep it sort of a
"family" affair since all of the opening artists would be list members.

I have a comment. It sounds like a good idea, but wouldn't it be a little
tacky to open the show with the same songs Ivan is going to play for us? It's
pretty non-traditional to open a concert with your own rendition of the
concert act's music.
I love the idea of the fan compilation CD, but I think that project should be
separate and alone from the private concert.
Any other comments?

I would strongly advise _not_ using CD-R in a live situation - use DAT or
better still several DAT units. Maximum time on CD is 74 minutes but 124
on DAT (at full quality of course). Then, its a simple case of sending
me the actual DAT (or giving me a copy after the gig!!) and I'll cut the
master CD-R for others to duplicate asap.
But then again, what do I know...
