I just love to play good news-bad news with you guys. ;-)

GOOD NEWS: The MWH Roy/Folk 2 for 1 will be released during the next six
months.

BAD NEWS: We were unable to reach a compromise with the US licensor for
the US territory. The CD will likely first appear in Europe or another
overseas country.

Details have yet to be determined but the tracks will most likely
include those already discussed. Packaging will be similar to our
previous 2for1 series releases.

For those of us in the US and Canada we will have to rely on friends
outside North America for our copies for now.

I know it sucks. I tried to work for a worldwide release but it is just
not meant to happen. This is the first public announcement. Tell your
friends! :-)

That is the toughest part. I would be violating US law if I made even a
single sale to anyone in the US. The law is clear on this issue and I
value my relationship with MCA even if we were not able to agree on a US
license.

I can sell to anyone outside the USA if there is anyone interested out
there. I'll let you all know when the CDs are available once we get
closer to the release date.

OK.
I just got Mike's "Pop Goes the World" segment from Top of the Pops.  This
is better that the "SOLID GOLD" footage because Ivan is actually singing.
Don't worry I will include both performances.  It's going to be a 2 hour tape.
   Come to think of it, I will have 4 Pop Goes the World.
       1. solid gold
       2. top of the pops
       3. video from the record guide w/ Ivan discussing it
       4. Laserdisc full video

The way I see it, I want as much footage as possible and there is room for all.
I will include everything I get, don't worry.

OK, I need some advice (a vote?) from all of you.
   Mike W. just e-mailed me with a good point.  He suggested that I should
make a MASTER copy tape first before making all of these copies.  He
suggested that our tapes , that were sent in, will start to wear.   I feel
that I should go ahead and do what I set out to do -- make individual MASTER
tapes for all of us.
    This way, I can do this for the first 30 people maybe, before sending
all the original tapes back (i think less than 30 of us want one).  Then we
can ALL have a second generation tape and not just ME.  Then all of us can
make 500 copies from our tapes, and everyone can have a tape that wants one.
Also my VCR heads won't get worn down that bad.  I can do under 50 tapes
like this, not 300.
    Also:

    Jim D.  suggested that my e-mail address be posted as a link to the MWH
page, so others can e-mail me for the video.  NO.  On the other hand, a hand
full of us could do this (me too), so MORE hats fans can get copies.
    I don't want to keep all your original tapes for more than a month -> TOPS.
Does this make sense?   What do all of you think?

I know that Collection was released in Canada only as an import from
MCA/Oglio in the States, but isn't it possible that the 2in1 might
be released in Canada, seperately from the U.S., just as Sideways was only
released in Canada?

I know, I know!!!... Canadian right are negotiated along with the U.S.
ones.
I hate this shit!!!  Are there other Canadian MWH fans out there who
resent being considered as just a sub-market of the U.S.?

Does that mean that we can get it in Canada?

THe last time I checked, that was the neme on my money... not U.S.A.!

I know that Canada is traditionally considered as part of the U.S. market,
but does your agreement with MCA stipulate no release in the U.S. only, or
within the American SPhere of Imperial Infleunce (sic), i.e. Anglo North
America?

I know these things are not in your control... but I'm just belly-aching!

Canada is treated as a different territory for this negotiation. Canada may fall
into place before the USA but who knows? Europe looks like they will be first.

Hi hats fans,
It might only be another week now before I begin recording.
    Just received:  Sideways video (near perfect quality!)
                    Sideways Musique Plus interview w/ Sideways concert footage

I was wondering..... was this the show at Les Foufonnes Electriques that was
supposedly the concert of the year in Montreal (where they did a 15 min.
version of Safety Dance and the whole club went nuts) - cool

OK back to the tape....  on the way:   Where Do the Boys Go and Safety Dance
videos recorded right off laserdisc, Thanks Greg!


        There is also going to be a BIG BIG surprise that will be on the end
of the tape.  Some of you might be able to figure out what it is.  hint:
its gonna make the video take the whole 2 hrs.

Don't worry my friend, I got your e-mail.

Everyone else who didn't get a response,
     I probably got all your "include me for the tape" e-mail messages.  I
just didn't feel like responding to 50 people at once.
     Lets all wait until I actually start recording, before sending me
"count me in" e-mail.   Just to calm everyone's nerves who wants a copy, I
will do my best to make as many copies as time permits, once I have all the
master tapes.
     I plan to record the first few copies for the people who sent in
contributions (free tape).   Then I will announce that I will begin
recording for everyone else, $10 US (a wee bit more out of the states).  At
that time, I will begin reading e-mail from people who want a copy.  Only
when I have a tape ready to go, will I return your e-mail and say, "its
ready to go".  By this time i've already got YOUR tape done and YOUR
envelope with your address on it.  Then i'll mail it out to you.   I would
like to mail out a copy to EVERYONE on the list who wants one.   I just hope
that I don't get over 100 people demanding a tape.   My VCR heads will begin
frowning on me.  And so will those rare master VHS tapes everyone is sending
in.
     If I can't fill everyone's order, I would honestly hope that the people
w/ the first few tapes will begin copying for others as well.   The more
copies everyone else makes, the less copies I have to make.  THIS IS WHY I
AM RECORDING EVERY TAPE INDIVIDUALLY FROM EACH OF THE MASTER TAPES.  So the
copies will be like a MASTER tape itself.  Consider the fact that I could
put A tape together (1st generation).  Then I could use that 1st gen. tape
to make everyone else's (2nd generation) tape.   I AM NOT DOING IT LIKE
THIS.  This is so all of you can make multiple 2nd generation tapes
yourselves.
     I do admit that the tapes that I make will be a bit better quality than
the (next generation) copy.  But I could have made it easier for myself and
just given everyone a (next generation) copy.
     Note to the contributers:   As soon as someone decides that they want
their master tape back, I will send them all back (MWH material on video is
priceless, isn't it).  If I didn't do this it would violate my trust.   At
that time, I will still continue to make copies, but from my personal tape.
     Hopefully, the contributers will give me about 3 weeks to make
everyone's tape before asking me to return them.  But it is up to all of
them.  The last thing I will, after I'm done, is return the original tapes
(free of charge of course).
      I do understand that I will have to send the contributers 2 packages a
piece : first, the final tape; second, their original tapes.  The $10 from
everyone else should cover this (it will cost me about $7 a tape- expenses
$3 profit to cover contributers return mail).  Like Mike Best, I don't want
to profit from this.  My goal is to spread MWH videos as far as possible,
for all.
      The bottom line:   If I don't record tapes for everyone who wants one,
I don't break even.  I have planned it this way so  A.  people will contribute
                                                  B. I make tapes for all

Alex,  My advice to you is to go to the HMV MEGASTORE on Oxford St.  Beware.
There are two HMVs on Oxford, a small one and a big one.  Go to the big one.
Every time I've been there, I've seen all CDs in print 1. Pop Goes The World
                                                       2. In the 21st Century
                                                       3. Sideways
PS: the import section


Remember,  Oglio records is rereleasing Rythym of Youth and Folk of the
Eighties III on one CD in a few months.  If you really want it all, you
could even order the "rare" boot CD with the FREEWAYS album on it from Mike
Best.  Then you could have them ALL on CD.   Too bad Freeways wasn't
originally released on CD.....

Reading some of the recent articles about dumping antarctica cause of
the 74 minute time limit, I remember reading about a CD manufactuer
[Eurodisc] that allows an album to go up to 79 minutes (there is an
extra fee though.) I wondered, if the 2 for 1 CD went to 79 mins, would
there be enough room to include things like Security or Freeways. Just
an idea since its hard to find these songs.

Laura from North Carolina here (usually [e-mail])

Don't believe everything you read in the "from" line - I have not yet
convinced my husband to like MWH, but we now have e-mail at home.  A good
thing, too, since Hurricane Fran knocked out our communications link at
work (i.e., no e-mail, no Net, no nothing.  We're glad to have phones
right now).

Just wanted to drop a quick line to let everyone know we made it through
relatively unscathed.  The eye of the storm went right over Raleigh,
where I work.  We live about 35 miles west of where the worst of it was,
so we lost shingles off the roof, several branches, and all electrical
power for 3 days.  We were better off than most - we didn't have trees
down, and we kept both our water and phone service throughout. We're all
still alive, and have 4 walls and most of a roof over our heads.

Being rather new to this list, I've never heard about this CD with FREEWAYS
on it. Can anyone tell me how I could go about getting a copy?
Also, I remember someone mentioning that "Folk of the Eighties" was never
released on CD. Well, I have an Italian CD of "Rhythm of Youth" with the FOTE
tracks added on it. I found it in Florence in 1990. I have no idea how you'd
find a copy today.

Could you please look up the label and catalog number information on your
CD-  is it actually an Italian pressing or just one of the Statik
pressing that you bought in Italy...

Hm, this brings to mind something.  When they say only 500 copies of the
RoY CD was pressed, does that mean only Canada?  Could there be more out

I'm Ben, a big Men W/O Hats fan (new to the "club").  I've seen a couple messages about bootleg CD's and a video, I'd be interested to hear about them and how I could get copies. Also Ogligo (something like that) is making a CD with FOT80's and RoY on it... I hear it's only being released in Europe, info on how I could get that would be great!

A bit of info. I saw 2 copies of FOT80's on CD in Bangor, Maine back in 1990. I was just a poor college student without a CD player at the time. I went back 2 weeks later to pick up a copy anyway and they had been sent away to some CD discount place with no further information. So close but yet so far away, I've spent the last 6 years searching for them!

"Remastered" implies that we would go back to the multitrack source
tapes. We will go back as far as the original two track stereo master
tapes. It will sound better that the original CDs that were made in the
'80s.

I am just curious.  Why is the "Collection" CD so hissy?   I sounds noiseier
than the original Statik CDs.   I am talking about Safety Dance, I Like, and
Living in China especially.  The rest of the CD sounds better than the
originals.
   Will the rerelease sound better than this?

Hi all,
I've recorded two tapes so far (whenever I'm not at work or sleeping).  I've
got about 40 requests in one day (ouch!).   I am have taken the
responsibility to do this so I will.   What I would like to do is find out
who has two VCRs?  If you have two VCRs and volunteer to do some taping
yourself, you will get one of the first tapes.   Don't worry, I've got all
your e-mail w/ addresses.  Give me another e-mail (to
[e-mail]) if you can do this.   As far as i'm concerned you
can charge what you like (after you pay me $10 for my expenses).  After you
receive my tape and get back to me, I will throw some other peoples e-mail
your way and maybe you can work something out.   Just verify with me, that
you want your order canceled (if you are dealing with another taper).  This
way , we both won't send tapes. etc.
      No need to panic everyone.....  I CAN do 40 or 80 tapes but some
people might not get their tapes for 2 months, see.  My goal is to get these
tapes to as many people as possible as quickly as possible, with as little
wear to the originals.

I was thinking maybe one person in Canada can record for all the
Canadians and one in Europe can record for the Europeans.  I have two
VCRs but they aren't stereo and one is a 2 head and doesn't sound too
great when you tape from it.

We have to rely on the masters we receive from the licensing label.

This time we will be able to take a bit more time to find the best
source. Probably the Statik CDs borrowed from a MWH fan with alot of
faith. :-)

Which source will you use?  You had mentioned in a previous post that the original 2-track for "Folk III" was
in pretty poor shape (or maybe just the WDtBG? portion).

Better late than never.....

As far as I concern there are no longer a red book time limit. History says
that the limit regarding to the red book, was casual and that the cd was
supposed to be at least long enough for one of Mozarts pieces, and that the
decission was taken by one of the VDs wives.....

So do we have to do some editing at all ??

Is it not a more important question to ask : What more can we squeeze in to=
 it ?

Hi,
Things are going very very well with the tapes!  I have done 7 already!  The
contributers will get their copies by the end of next week (this friday).
Then I can start copying the tapes for everybody else.   Hopefully, the
first 7 people, contributers, can post to the rest of the list concerning
how great the tape is FIRST HAND as soon as they receive it.  I mean, how
can you take my word?   I have already purchased a bunch of jetpack mailers
and new blank VHS tapes (bricks of 5 or 10).
    I was planning on assigning everyone a number, who has e-mailed me
concerning a tape.  I will put their address and e-mail add. into a logbook,
with their number next to their name.   I will then frequently post which
number I have reached at the time.  For example, I am just finishing up #34,
etc.  If you are 34 or 33 , your tape will be in your hands within the week.
Neat huh.  This way I can also keep track of who has mailed me a check or
not (dont mail me anything yet!).
    For those of you asking what the exact tracklist is?  You will find out
when the first 7 people receive their tapes.   hint:  its fantastic!!!!!!

Strange timing or what!! I've been into MWH from day one and now that Tom's
video is complete MTV go and show Cow Tipping. This is the only time I have
ever seen the Safety Dance video (even if I did have to put up with
voiceovers from Beavis and Butthead). Anyway off to rewind it again..and
again..and again.

First of all,

tapes for about another month.  I have 50 people that want copies after all

    I am checking all of your tapes for an INCREASE in dropouts everytime I

You are #39.  Just so everything is fair and square, I assigned numbers
according to who e-mailed me first, after I said "GO".  Don't worry, I want
everyone of the first 50 to get one.  I think after that, its just people
who came in from the 80s newsgroup.  Maybe I can make some for them too,
lets see how the tapes hold up.   Remember, You may want a copy from someone
else, if you don't want to wait about a month.  I am hoping I can get some
help.   In fact, you can jump in the line yourself to #11 if you agree to
dub some copies for some of the North Americans.  Do you have two VCRs?

I don't seem to have the message anymore, but I think Tom said if we
want to know what's actually on the the video we need to wait for someone
who's recieved their copy to post the info. So can someone send me the
info when you have it? The most recient track listing I saw posted had
several `maybes' on it and I'd like to know what really is on it before
I pay for something I might not want. Thanks.

People were talking about places to get Carl's 2/1 cd since it won't be
released in the US first. I know of two rather good mailorder import houses
that might be worth checking with once it's out in Europe. Compact Disc
Services (aka C&D) in Scotland and BeeBees in England. I've been ordering
from C&D for years. I get most of my synth (not Hats type synth) from
them and they're good folks. I've only ordered from BeeBees once but they
seemed fine. Neither of them are on the net, but I'll dig up their phone
numbers and post them later.

Thats the first 50.   I may have to temporarily stop here.  At the very
least, I should send the masters back at this point, whether there is no
degradation or not.  I may continue dubbing off my tape after this,
continuing my list ->.
By the way, I am playing the masters in my BETTER of my two VCRs.  When the
tape rewinds, it slows down the motor near the end. This stops the VCR from
tugging at the tape.  My heads on this VCR were also just pro- cleaned about
a month ago, by chance.   It is possible that your copy may look better than
the original.  I have reports from a couple of contributers that their tapes
have some tracking bars and static.  I am not getting it on my S-VHS deck
(seperate audio & video tracking).  It even brings in old mono tapes near
perfect.
     OK.  Now there is a possible way to cut in the line.  If you have the
ability to dub tapes for other people (you charge what you want), from your
copy, you will jump up in line.  This way everyone will get a copy, whether
they are 70 or #100.   We will all work something out later.
     The contributers don't have numbers because their tapes were just
mailed 3 hours ago, priority mail.  They will receive their tapes in just a
couple of days.  Canada will be about a week, sorry.
     The final track listing of the video is a bit of a secret.  I WANT the
first few people who receive the tape to report to the listserv everything,
first hand.   I don't want to spoil it until the first person receives
his/her tape.

Progress:  I am recording #2 Donald Stroud right now.  See, isn't this
method cool?

There is a list of musical mailing lists maintained by Myra Wong.  I don't
know how complete it is, but you can search the web for it.  Several sites
have copies of it.  I think the title has "Musical Mailing Lists" or
something to that effect, so try that.  Good luck.

It seems to me that Men Without Hats is like a local Montreal Band.  I say
this because the Montreal MTV, Musique Plus, plays the hell out of MWH
videos (at least before '91).  On the other hand, any other music network
doesn't even know who they are - exeption Much Music plays a bit, but not
enough.
    I taped "I Like" just recently off of Musique Plus.  I thought it was
really cool, when I visited Montreal in 1992, that everyone and their mother
knows and loves MWH in that city, it seems.  There were a few exceptions of
course, but everyone knew who they were.  Now even in Toronto, people had to
think a bit to figure out who they even were.   It was really cool, going
into a quebecois record store and finding 3 sealed Freeways records in Montreal.

Well, maybe I'm the lucky first (at least one of them...)

First off, Congratulations Tom!  A wonderful job and _excellent_ quality
throughout.  I can see you put an awful lot of time and work into it (down to
the labels) and I am very, very impressed.

I had most of the material beforehand, but I was very pleased with the newer
items, especially the Top of the Pops portion --- I also found it funny that
Ivan seemed to be singing over an instrumental in the Pops appearance, but
Solid Gold was just a straight lip-synch.

The middle section looks and sounds great and I am just incredibly happy that
I have one package all the way through...

I sat through the entire two hours and was lost in memories.  Thanks!

And to anyone who hasn't decided whether or not to get it:  There's no
question.  It's worth it:

Every video is represented, lots of interview material and a big surprise
I'll let someone else rave about..  I think I've done enough!

Tom,
You are right about Montreal & MWH, despite the fact that they haven't
released anything since "Sideways" inj 1991, and before that rleases of
the preceding albums and touring were sporadic, it has always seemed that
they have maintained a strong presence in Montreal all thoughout.

You're right that they are still well known in Monteal, and I suppose
that's because of the continuing video-play on MUsique-Plus and the
activities of Ivan and Co. in the Montreal cultural scene, Colin and his
operas, Ivan's work with bands such as Voivod, etc...

A friend of mine purported that his brother briefly played with MWH in the
very early 80s i.e. PSD (pre-Safety Dance) when they were just an
Outremont synth-garage band.

Montreal has long been a cauldron of interesting cultural influences, and
there are a couple of other bands who are part of that scene, which I am
quite fond of which I thought might be of interest to MWH fans.

THE BOX is another band in the stable of MWH producer, Marc Durand.
They're different from MWH in that they're francophones who decided to
sing in English, rather than Anglo-Montrealers like MWH.  However, they
have much of the same synth sound as MWH, perhaps not quite as danceable,
but with thought-provoking lyrics and moody arrangements, much like MWH's
darker songs.

Another band, which is also quite different, but has insanely danceable
tunes, with social commentary is ME, MOM & MORGENTALER.  They are a big
brash band, largely devoid of synth, but full of fire, with more than a
half-dozen members playing guitars, horns, and even an accordion.  They
exemplify the cultural diversity of Montreal of today, with songs in
English, French and Spanish.  (They also offer thanks in  the liner notes
to their first CD to Ivan ("wo-ho!"))

A reflection of mine on being a Canadian MWH fan, is that I must confess,
somewhat sheepishly, that I only really got turned on to MHW in the first
place, after it started to top the U.S. charts in 1982 (was it?) and I saw
the video on, of all places, Casey Kasem's video show (AGGGHHHH!).
It does make me think about the way in which Canadians have traditionally
related to their cultural products... that they need American recognition
of it before they will embrace it.  I would say that this was probably the
case for MWH outside of Quebec, in their early years.

Got the video!!  Wooo Hooo!!!

Thanks Tom, and to everybody who contributed.  As far as I'm concerned,
this shows that we "Hats Fans" have got our act together and know how to
beat those production companys at their own game. (I'm not talking about
Carl here though  :^)  )    Ivan would definately approved of the fans
bypassing all those record company executives that ripped him off for
years!!


The Much Music concert was an excellent addition! Somebody was sitting
on top of this one nice and quiet like. >:-(  Thanks heaps though whom
ever you are!  ;-)


All in all, this is a very complete video and everyone who gets one
won't regret it.

The only thing I would say is too bad there wasn't a laser disk out
there with all MWH videos on it, but I'm not going to cry about the odd
dropout here and there. (The best VCR in the world can't fill in a
dropout!   er...  can it?)

BTW can anybody translate the French interview from the video?

First, a general note to Tom:

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS VIDEO THING!

Now, a comment to everyone about the video:

    (stunned silence)

That's about all I can say. I sat down last night and watched every
single minute without getting off the couch. I didn't even realize
that there was a video for "...In The 21st Century". It is now one of
my favorites. Ever. I had seen everything up to "Pop Goes The World",
but everything else was brand new.

The one video that really sticks out in my mind is "I Like". The band
took the theme from "Safety Dance" and brought it forward into a sort
of "1984"-ish scenario. One interesting thing I had forgotten about was
how everyone else from the band besides Ivan appears at the end of the
video. It's very cool. And "I Like" is an awesome song to begin with.

I loved it all. What a great band. If only Ivan and crew would get
their energy back, and head into the studio again...

But even if they don't, they left us all a wonderful body of work that
is better than most everything being created today.

Long live Men Without Hats!

I just can't stop watching the "21st Century" video. Something about it
is just hypnotizing. The scenes with the band dancing around on that
little patch of garden, with the word "EARTH" wrapping around them a la
"I Like"... and then the face from the cover of the CD pulsing into a
heart to the beat of the music... wow. I don't know why, but for some
reason it captivates me.

Remarkable.

Oh, and I have a question for the MWH experts out there: is there anyway
to get the mixes of the songs from the videos? I particularly liked the
remix of "Moonbeam". That song not being one of my favorites, I was
pleasantly surprised by how much more enjoyable the version in the video was.

Yeah, this video was always my favourite.  The attention to detail shows
what a genius Ivan can be. Notice that those red letters don't always
spell "Earth". During a very brief momment someone went and moved the
"h" to the front to spell "Heart".  Ingenious or what!!!  I thought the
use of computer graphics was very appropriate for the Men Without Hats
considering their synth background.

As you say, "Remarkable"

BTW I, also, cannot get enough of this video collection!!!!

As a member of Men without Hats, I thought that people might be
interested in various things I know about the band. As I notice things
on the newsgroup that jog my memory, I'll post some of my observations.
If anyone is interested in my weird anecdotes, post mail and I'll keep
doing them.

Seems like lots of people like the 21st century video. We first started
playing it when we were on tour for PGTW. Ivan had the basic chord
structure, and it started out a lot more guitar based. That swoopy,
ethereal synth line I wrote with an Oberheim Matrix 1000.

In 1989 I was at a music conference in NY, and I was walking through the
Village when this hunched over wino came zooming down the sidewalk and
head-butted me in the stomach. When I grabbed him, I realized it was
Ivan! Apparantly he had seen me walking down the street and ran out of
some cafe to accost me. Ivan was putting together ideas for 21st
century, so two weeks later I wound up in upstate NY in the back of this
Saab dealership doing tracks for the album. Lenny Pinkus had copied my
synth line for the title track, but it was such a weird sound we had to
bring down my Oberheim to duplicate it. While we were recording, I got
the flu or food poisoning or something. I was so sick for a couple of
days that I had to hold myself up with one hand while I played with the
other. (I still laugh at the mistakes I played on that album) Between
tracks, I'd lie on a couch in the lobby and watch TV. Once when Ivan
came out to get me I was watching "Beetle Juice". I guess I looked
pretty green, because Ivan looked at the TV, looked at me and started
grinning. "Beetle Bruce!", he said, and burst out laughing.

The bass player in the band then was Marika Tjelios. The girl in the
video and on the CD picture was a model, Marika has jet black hair and
had to bleach it for the tour. Fortunately our drummer did not have to
gain 300 pounds and grow a fibreglas head!

Wow! I remember that show!(or lack thereof). I don't remember why that
one fell through. We had this idiot agent who insisted in booking us
into venues where the band couldn't possibly fit. This also happened on
the last date of the tour in California. We set up all the gear and
found that I would have to sit on the bar to play!. Ivan got so pissed
off, we tore it all back down again and went out partying./

Where did Ivan go is the $64 question. I'm still trying to track him
down.

The snowman is, as you pointed out, a "Bonhomme", or "Good Man". He's a
mascot for the annual Quebec winter carnival. Ivan used to tell people
it was the ghost of John Bonham.(I thought this was very clever)

We could usually sucker some unwitting fan into donning the suit for the
live show and dancing around and waving for the encore. Unfortunately,
it was an actual winter carnival suit and it weighed at least 60lbs, and
was made out of this heavy, non-breathing wool stuff, with a massive
fibreglas head. Our lighting setup could crank the onstage heat up to
about 100 degrees, epecially in venues with lower ceilings. By the
middle of the encore, usually the Bonhomme wasn't quite looking his
chipper self and was starting to weave drunkenly. Sometimes he'd do a
complete, out-cold face plant right on the stage. This always cracked us
up completely, because he stil had that idiotic grin on his face.

Because the head was so unweildy, we often had to carry it on when we
were flying, and it didn't have a case. One time we were held up in the
Detroit airport and were very bored. Darren, the monitor guy, found a
little merry-go-round, the kind you put a quarter in, and rode round and
round with the head on. It was pretty surreal, and he was starting to
frighten some of the other passengers, when two security guys ran up
with their guns drawn and start yelling, "off the ride, NOW! Lie face
down on the floor and take the head off!" We had to do a fair bit of
explaining to get out of that one, and I think we had to sign some
document that said we would never wear a mask or disguise in an airport
again. Geez, you Americans have no sense of humor:-)

So Tulsa nearly did you in, eh?  Well, I must apologize then on behalf
of our fine, clean city for not being able to accomodate all of your
grumbling bellies.  Sorry about that!  ('Tis true New York City we are

Um, it's actually kinda funny that you'd say something about not being
able to find food in Tulsa!  Right about the time you performed here, I
remember reading a review in some forgotten publication by some poor
sap who was on a tour of sorts through several preselected American
cities for the purpose of doing nothing more than writing his
impressions about each of them.  Why, I dunno.

Anyway, Tulsa was one of the cities he visited.  The graphic used at
the top of our review was one consisting of the Oral Roberts University
"Prayer Tower" surrounded by a burger, some fries, and a Coke!  It
appears that he found this place to be nothing but ORU and an endless
parade of fast food restaurants!

What time of night did you finally decide to go hunting for some food?
And what did you ultimately settle for?  Denny's and The Kettle
(America's Kitchen) are always open!

I didn't bother asking you this in my previous post but since you do
remember something specific from the brief time you spent in Tulsa, I
must ask the inevitable question, "Do you remember me or signing my
album covers?" I certainly don't expect you to answer that in the
affirmative, but if there's a chance that you do, I'd like to know.

The main reason why I'm curious about that is because somebody came up
to me at the SRO afterparty and told me that the band was impressed by
the fact that I'd brought my albums to the show.  That surprised me
because I didn't think it unusual at all.

Ivan was very kewl to sign the cover of my Statik import "ROY" LP
between songs during the show, although had I known beforehand that I'd
have another chance to get his autograph at SRO afterwards, I certainly
would have waited.  I've always felt like I was being a nuisance to him
that night because of it.  I have no idea if he likes or hates signing
autographs!

And finally, I found the negatives for the pictures I took of the show
that night, so if there is a demand for them I can now satisfy it.  You
guys (and girls) looked great performing in front of all those huge
paintings of Hank Williams and Johnny Lee Wills, et al!  Geez!  :)

Actually, we were trying to find food about 2pm on a Saturday! I
remember that every retaurant was closed, but each one had a sticker
that said "Eat Out More Often-Tulsa Chamber of Commerce" on the window,
and that inexplicably, everyone we met apologized for us having to be in
Tulsa.

Actually, I DO remember you, now that you mention the albums! You had
some very funky imports!(Incidently, 5 minutes after I met you I walked
straight into a plate glass window and almost broke my nose!)

I would KILL to get negs  of that show! For some reason, there are very
few onstage photos from that era. Let me know! I've been looking for
some recently!

Hey, I forgot about that! We had one of the Emulators go down right
before the show, and this guy from Ice House did major surgery on it in
the dressing room under this huge oil painting of Willie Nelson. It was
very surreal. We all got down on our knees and did some "Hail Willie"s"
in front of the painting, and miraculously, the Great One healed it, two
minutes before the show.

Actually, this is a simple one. I NY, some of us bought new wardrobe at
this kind of neo-bondage shop. I got these jeans with this kind of
rubberized outer surface like pencil erasers, and Heidi got this skin
tight rubber dress. The next night, we were playing some venue with a
really low ceiling. The lights were maybe 2 feet above our heads (Heidi
and I were on risers). It was so hot that I sunburned the top of my
head. Heidi made out worse, because this plastic crap started to melt
and stick to her body. It got all gooey, and we thought all the seams
were going to let go. This dress only got used once.

Another time, Ivan cut the lining out of his black leather stage jacket
to make it cooler, and wore it over his bare skin. When he got off
stage, the dye from the leather had dyed his skin black, and he looked
like he still had the jacket on! No matter how ratty my jacket lining
got, I never took it out.

What kind of doctor are you anyway?

 I am a Doctor of Dental Surgery. I can fix your teeth if you are ever in
Sacramento, California. I always wanted to see Men Without Hats but I guess
that'll never happen, although I have noticed a trend of many bands trying to
regroup, put out a new CD and tour with the original members (ie. Journey).
MWH was not that famous though so I doubt that'll happen. The closest I'll get
is when the bootleg video shows up (Only 31 people ahead of me still!!!).

That's really odd.  I have this really odd habit of always eating in
Tulsa at 2pm on Saturdays and never have one bit of trouble finding
something to eat.  Hmmm...  :)

If that happens the next time you're on tour in Tulsa (fingers
crossed), just ask somebody how to get to Broken Arrow.  BA is a Tulsa
suburb about 10 miles to the southeast.  Last I heard, it's the fastest
growing city in all of Oklahoma.  You'll have no problem finding a
place to eat there.

I think that's because everybody here is all too aware of Oklahoma's
image to the outside world.  To many here, including myself, it's quite
an embarrassment 'cuz we'uns ain't all cowboys 'n' injuns 'roun' these
parts, knowhutimean?  It's really a nice place to live if you can deal
with the endless Okie-tawk ads on the teevee and radio.

Yeah, I believe I was the only one who brought any that night.  Tulsa's
crowds are weird.  Most of the time they never dance, sing or anything.
They just stand there and watch.  If I really like the band, I want
them to know it!

Actually, I just have the one funky import version of ROY.  It's not a
cutout but I did find it in a discount bin back in '86 at one of the
local chain outlets.  It was all by itself and I just felt so sorry for
it!

I wish I had bought a copy of PGTW before the show so I could have
gotten it autographed as well.  I was so entertained by the performance
that I went right out the next day and bought it on CD.  It came in a
plastic bubble pak with a really neat cardboard insert sporting the
cover artwork.  I still have that insert too.  I'm keeping it for the
next time I get to see Ivan so I can get his autograph again!

Ouch!  I think we've all done that at least once in our lives!

I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to imply that I would ever willingly part
with the negatives.  I posted something here a few months ago about
having pictures of the 1988 Tulsa show and got quite a few replies from
people willing to pay the amount it would cost me to make and mail new
prints from the negatives.  The only thing was that at that time I
didn't exactly know where the negatives were.  I've found them now so
if there is still a demand for them, I can now satisfy it.

Actually, what I also have now that I didn't have then is access to a
scanner and my own web site via Delphi.

I think I should actually scan the original prints I had made in '88
and make them available for viewing and downloading via my site.  Then,
if anybody still wanted the real things made from the negatives, at
least they'd know more of what they'd be getting.  Be patient and I'll
make them available soon!  Already there is a link to a MWH site
located in the "My Favourite Musical Artists" section of my site.  I
could just add a new part to it containing the link as well as the
pictures.

P.S. If I remember correctly, you guys played Kemper Arena in Kansas
     City two nights after you played The Cain's Ballroom here.  I had
     just been to Kemper Arena three months before to see Michael
     Jackson's 2nd US concert there supporting his then-new "Bad"
     album.  I have always wondered what Ivan, you and the rest of the
     band thought about going to two such extremes in as many days as
     far as venues go.  Kemper Arena is quite large, especially when
     compared to the cubbyhole Cain's (although I really enjoyed seeing
     one of my favourite bands performing in such a close and personal
     setting).

Wow, what a kick to find a real bandmember relating old war stories here on
the list!

Bruce, I saw you on the PGTW tour in Santa Clara, California, at a place
then-called One Step Beyond.  I think I sang every lyric that night, and Ivan
seemed to notice.  The real highlight was during WDTBG, when Ivan stuck his
microphone right into my face for a big "woah-ho!"  I thought that was about
the coolest thing in the world back then.  Meeting you folks and chatting
would have been even better though.  (Maybe it was a school night?)

Anyway, welcome.  And I vote for your telling every single story you can
remember.   :)
