PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.

Because cs.uwp.edu is due to be decommissioned soon, the hats, jarre,
kraftwerk, and yello mailing lists are moving from cs.uwp.edu to xmission.com.
Here is a list of steps being taken to make this move happen.

  * All subscribers to the digest versions of the lists have been moved to
    the regular interactive versions so that they will see this announcement
    as soon as possible.

  * New versions of the lists and their digests are now up and running at
    xmission.com.  SUBSCRIBERS WILL NOT BE AUTOMATICALLY MOVED TO THE NEW
    LISTS.  YOU MUST RESUBSCRIBE AT THE NEW LOCATION.  To do so you will need
    to send at least two email messages:

    1) Send email to [e-mail] with the command

          unsubscribe listname

       on a line by itself, where "listname" is hats, jarre, kraftwerk, or
       yello, as appropriate to the list(s) you're on.  If you are on more
       than one list, your message should include one unsubscribe command
       for each list you're on, with each command on a line by itself.  You
       should NOT include the "-digest" part of the listname, even if you
       were on the digest version of the list before you received this message.

    2) Send email to [e-mail] with the command

      subscribe listname

       on a line by itself, where listname is hats, hats-digest, jarre,
       jarre-digest, kraftwerk, kraftwerk-digest, yello, or yello-digest
       as appropriate to the list(s) you want to be on.  As with the
       unsubscribe commands, if you want to be on more than one list you
       need to send each subscribe command on a line by itself.

       In order to keep spammers from mailbombing the lists, the xmission
       versions of the list are closed.  This means that you'll receive two
       messages as part of your new subscription to the xmission versions
       of the list: the first message will acknowledge that your request was
       received and tell you that it must be manually handled by the list
       admin (me).  The second will be a copy of the list info file once
       I've actually forwarded the subscription request to majordomo.

    If you have any difficulty leaving the old lists or joining the new lists,
    please email me directly at [e-mail].

  * Messages posted to the old list addresses will be automatically forwarded
    to the new lists for a short period.  PLEASE UPDATE ANY MAIL ALIASES YOU
    MAY HAVE SET UP FOR THE LISTS AND START SENDING YOUR POSTS TO THE NEW
    LISTS INSTEAD OF THE OLD LISTS.  The only thing that will change is the
    machine name; "[e-mail]" becomes "[e-mail]", and
    so forth.  The new lists will still be archived, so don't worry about
    missing messages if you don't get over to the new lists right away -- but
    please move as soon as you possibly can.

    DO NOT SEND MESSAGES TO BOTH LISTS IN THE HOPES OF "REACHING EVERBODY".
    People on the xmission lists will get two copies of everything sent this
    way, which will annoy them.

Just a note....I bought 21st Century this weekend and have listened to it all
week...I remember when I first bought it on vinyl when it first came out and
then on cassette when it first became a cutout....I remembered it to be a
very boring album....I stand corrected...It's like finding a new MWH record!

I vote for deleting anything that was already featured on COLLECTION.
"Safety Dance" might be the obvious choice, but something tells me
that's going to be a major selling point. How about "Antarctica"?

You say "just for fun"...I thought the 2 for 1 was a dead issue...?

My recommendation would be to replace two tracks with their
edited single versions:

This would result in a total savings of 2:08, which should give you enough
room to play with.

My reasons should already be clear, but I'll give them anyway:
    (1) Using these substitutions would save us from having to
        remove a track.
    (2) The album-length versions of these tracks are already
        available (and in print!) on the _Collection_ CD, whereas
        the single versions have never appeared on CD.
    (3) An edited version of a track would be less objectionable
        to the 'casual' MWH fan than the omission of an entire
        song.  The inclusion of rarer versions of these songs
        (and the bonus version of Antarctica) would, on the
        other hand, make the CD more appealing to collectors.

I would *much* rather see the 7" edits used on a two-fer CD than
see a track omitted entirely.  If this is impossible for some
reason (unusable masters, for example), then I would very
reluctantly suggest omitting "I Got The Message", since there
are already two versions of that song available on _Collection_.

Call me overly sentimental, but I'd much rather hear the albums as they
were back when I first bought them. Putting shorter radio edit versions
of "I Got The Message" and others just wouldn't be the same. I think that,
if these long-out-of-print CDs are going to be reissued, they need to be
as close to the original format as possible.

"Antarctica" is on "Collection", so people who really want it can find it
there. I think it should be removed if time/space is a consideration.

That's my opinion, anyway.

And I *like* "Unsatisfaction"... I love how that last buzzing note leads
into the drum for "Where Do The Boys Go?"

(Note to Carl: My plea for meticulous attention to detail does *not*
 include emblazoning the CD sleeve with "Where TO The Boys Go?")

The buzzing intro to WDTBG is great as well as the whole song itself "Ya'd
almost done me in-a" Gotta have that one (theoretically speaking). In fact, I

Since we've got the longer tracks on the compilation, this makes a whole
lot of sense to me.

By the way, if this really is the 4 min version of Antarctica, then this is
not the same version as the 3 minute one on "Collection".   This is the Folk
of 80s I and Freeways version that was NEVER on CD.
    On the other hand, it does NOT belong on Rythym of Youth.   I will have
to take the side of the majority here.  It appears the track listing is
perfectly matched to the original Canadian versions.  Why spoil it?
    If a track HAS to go, lets get rid of Antarctica.

I'm curious, Carl...

I have CDs which are almost 78 minutes long.  What is the
significance of the "Red Book" time of 74 minutes, and what
complications does a longer CD ential?  Does it have to do
with cost, manufacturing standards, your company's source
for discs, sound quality, or something else?

I don't want to seem like I'm looking a potential gift horse in its
hypothetical mouth, but I'm just curious about how this works.

I suppose Antarctica should go if it has to.  _Definitely_ don't
edit or shorten any of the songs (I Got the Message and I Like
are my 2 fave ever MWH songs).  I'm not concerned with
continuity with the original albums, there have been so many
different versions anyway...

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE AND UNSUBSCRIBE
To join "hats," send email to [e-mail] with the command
"subscribe hats" (without quotes) in the body of the message.
You will recieve a confirmation message and a copy of this information
file.  Once you are subscribed, you will recieve each message as it
is posted to the list.

A digest version of "hats" is also available.  If you subscribe
to the digest you will recieve groups of postings in a single email message
instead of one at a time.  These "digests" are sent out whenever there
is a certain amount of text in the queue.  To subscribe to the digest,
email [e-mail] with the command "subscribe hats-digest"
(again, with no quotes) in the body of the message.

Carl,

I would tend to agree with the person who suggested to use single edits of "I
Got The Message" and "I Like".  I've never heard them, and that would make
the disk slightly more interesting (though, in truth, I will buy it
regardless).

One thought:  If "Antarctica" stays (and it looks like it will not), couldn't
you put it in between the albums?  It's completely out of order at the end of
the CD (chronologically, it should be the first track), and my personal
opinion is that "I Sing Last/Not For Tears" is a great final track.

Hello, all!

To Carl (and anyone else who cares), why not go with the suggested order and truncate the last ~2 minutes of Antarctica, as if the disc were a dubbed cassette that wasn't watched closely enough?  You could put on the liner notes that it was done at the insistance of some crazed mw/oh fan, and it would still be enough of the song for us to get a taste.  Then the newbies would have to buy Collection to hear how it ends! ;) Sorry, I must have had too much coffee today (or not enough)

The posts that come from the new list don't display "hats@xmission..."
as the sender, like the old list... the sender's e-mail address is

I would certainly disagree with those who don't like Sideways... I know
that it's a long way from the moody, and then more upbeat synth ditties we
came to associate with MWH, but I thought it was a pretty cool album,
maybe less song and lyric oriented, but very listenable as a whole...

Heck!  My pals and I spent several days outside the local liquor store
busking to "Sideways" the summer it came out!  (We even met Leonard
Cohen's love-child, who helped us out on harmonica for a while.)

I think some of the songs lose less in the edit than
Antarctica contributes, and the end result would be a stronger album.

the centerpiece of my old, worn out RoY cassette;
I couldn't *bear* to leave it off.

I've been getting two copies of each letter sent to the hats listing. I
was checking to see if I was still on the old address.

 Antarctica, it seems, is destined to be dropped from an ideal 2-in-1 CD,
but what's this business of leaving Unsatisfaction off? I love that song!
And every MWH song, for that matter (we'll pretend we don't know about
some of the songs on "Sideways"..) I've been away from this list for a
while (I got 213 new messages yesterday), so it looks like there IS no
2-in-1 as of yet, eh? I'm just wondering.. is this "ideal CD" discussion
a legitimate debate, or simply pure conjecture? (i.e. a total waste of
time).. will we EVER see RoY & Folk3 on CD? (why the hell they were never
released years ago is beyond me.. you can find Belinda Carlisle & Rick

Carl (et al),

I would like to change my vote.  I originally thought we should go with
edited versions, keeping "Antarctica".  Then the following occurred to me:

If, hypothetically speaking, someone were to make a bootleg CD of the first
EP and _Freeways_, it would certainly have the longer, original version of
"Antarctica" on it.  This is where, I must admit (despite having the song on
my cassette version of _ROY_) "Antarctica" really belongs.

But under any circumstances:  Don't -- Don't -- DON'T remove a song (such as
"Unsatisfaction" or "Eurotheme", as suggested) which isn't available on CD
elsewhere!  That would be a FAR more heinous crime than editing a couple of
tracks which are available elsewhere.

Go get 'em, Carl!  Thanks for fighting for us!

I also vote for dumping Antarctica.  I like the song, but I like the idea of
having the cd keep the original Canadian release order of ROY.  That makes
Antarctica the odd song out, as it were.

I also like Unsatisfaction...dopily repetitive as the words may seem, it is
one of my favorite MWH songs.

That's a matter of opinion I guess....I've heard they used everything from
Prophet-5's and 10's to Roland Jupiter-8's and Korg drum machines...then they
sampled the instruments on a Synclavier for live performances....

I have yet to hear the truth from Ivan though...

This two-fer CD is supposed to be RoY and FoTEIII, so obviously neither of these two albums should be altered from their original formats.  The bonus track(s)
should be the first ones cut (or edited).  But, if we have to be inane enough
to actually vote on this thing, I'd vote for dumping "Antarctica".  This makes
no difference, though, since it won't be released anyway.  Why'd you bring it
up, Carl?  Out of boredom?  That's my reason for everything...

This is much better this way.  We were complaining about that on the old
list. :)  This way, you can actually reply to just the person who sent it.
Also, Pine actually puts the correct name on the quoted material.

Not much of a tape yet.  We still need:

We are making progress though.   For those of you who didn't get my first
message, here it is.  The final tape will cost $10 US (outside of US may be
a wee bit more depending on where you live).  If you send in a contribution
(videos we don't have yet or other footage), you get your original tape
shipped back for free + a free FINAL TAPE.  Incentives Incentives Incentives.
    I have already purchased a couple of bricks of blanks.  There are
already more than 10 people intersted in a copy of the tape.  This is all
working out so far.  I think I will just about break even, but we need those
other videos, hatters.

Wow. Is this tough love or what?

The bottom line is that the negotiations are ongoing and I would like to
be prepared if/when I get the green light. I have new options available
that I plan to explore.

I have become quite a fan since I started working on Collection. I would

... is all very well, but a bit of analysis wouldn't go amiss.

Leaving off songs that were on the original release is not the same as leaving
off songs that  you don't  like. The latter  is personal  and subjective,  the
former not. (Although  we could argue  about which  version of the  CD is  the
"original".)

Following on from the fact  that there are at  least two original versions  of
the CD, leaving  off songs  on Collection makes  more sense  than leaving  off
songs that are not. (Hell, as long as you have indestructible digital versions
you can make your own UK, US or even Yugoslav version of the album on tape  if
you are that hot on album continuity.)

Personally, I fancy the edited versions idea, though I'd also like to know how
"hard" the 74 minute constraint is. (I know pressing errors go up as you  make
CDs longer and  in bulk  pressings this results  in an  unacceptable level  of
throwaways but does the same limitation apply to our "hand" pressings?)

algorithm for error correction in CD can  cope with a 2mm hole drilled in  the
CD. Anybody want to test this with an original ROY? (Ducking and running :)

I used to think the sugestion of usign the shorter version of
"Antarctica" was a great idea.  But the short version is already used on
"Collection"!  In my opinion, keep the original RoY and FoT80s, don't
touch them!  "Antarctica" should be kept because it's the longer
version.  How much time is left on the disc?  Remember, you can still go
past the 75 minute mark. I have some CDs where they reach very close to
79 minutes.

Sorry for flooding people's maiulboxes with this unreleated topic, but I
couldn't resist.  I have a few cds with holes in them and they do play
crystal clear anyway! :)  Thsoe cds weren't over 74 minutes.  They  are
under 40!

I agree.. the single edits aren't just truncated versions of the
originals; they're slightly different mixes.  I remember thinking I had
gotten shortchanged when buying the 7" singles, only to find that the
cuts are pretty cool.

From a fan's point of view, seeing a 2-for-1 CD out with the original
tracks from Folk III and RoY will be great - of course!  But after the
initial packaging lookover & play(s), what remains is a great sounding
CD copy of everything found on the cassette and LP copies of these
albums - which have been available for the past 12+ years.  This is what
I was afraid MCA was eventually going to do just for the pure $$$ (and
this is no knock on Carl's hard work).

Adding the long (or short) version of Antartica, along with the edits of
"I Like" and "I Got the Message", would take the release above the
(this'll-sound-bad-but-it's-not-meant-to-be) mediocrity of a simple
rerelease.

There are not "two original versions" of Rhythm of Youth.  There is *one*
original version -- that's what the word "original" means.  The US LP/CS
versions were revised versions.

What makes the most sense is to put the *original* versions of the two
albums in question on the twofer CD and leave any stray non-album tracks
to a possible future collection.

Spoken very wisely...bootleg CD's are in the making...put the originals on
the 2'fer and leave the extra stuff for the bootleg...Methinks that is why
Carl is trying extra hard to get this released...in this age of being able to
copy CD's for next to nothing...what's to keep us from making our own copies
and distributing them ourselves? Not much...it would be hard to track
down...If this 2'fer doesn't come out...the bootleg will...it WILL come
out....and Durand won't get as much money because fans won't be as
hardpressed to find the original albums on CD...Antartica is not "that" great
a song...I would much rather have the original albums remain intact than to
have to get a bootleg later on of the "original" MWH cd's in their originally
released format (which is what I would press Mikey for if they don't come out
that way).

Listfolk,

I'm not sure the contention made here about there being only one "original"
form of an album is fair, and further I'm not even sure it can always be
applied.

As for the first item, fairness, who cares?  We could argue that one all day.
 I'm an American, and my first taste of _ROY_ was the US cassette version,
quite different from the Canadian album.  Anyway....

More importantly:  In this day and age, I don't know that one can always use
'first release' as a catch-all.  What about a world-wide release on the same
day, with different tracks and sequencing in different countries?  Japan, for
instance, often gets more tracks for their albums.  And US CD's from UK bands
occasionally have one more track, or one less.

One might argue that the format of the release in the country of the band's
origin is the "original" format.  But what if the band is far more successful
in another country?  (Bush, for example, has sold 16,000 albums in its native
UK, 2 million in the US.)  And what if the cassette and CD forms in the same
country have different tracklistings?  (See Pink Floyd's _Pulse_, for
example.)  Then which is the "original"?

And what about the country where the release is being made?  Oglio is an
American company, not Canadian.  One might argue that they have no reason to
follow a Canadian precedent.  MHW's own country can't even get these albums
re-released, so why should their old format decisions dictate what the new
re-release should look like?

Just some food for thought....

If you don't think my assertion applies generally, okay -- I don't think it
does either.  I do think it applies quite well to this particular album,
though.

I don't like it when record companies alter the tracking on a reissue to
meet time contraints or serve some perceived marketing need in different
countries (as in: "Americans won't like this version, let's drop some
album tracks and stick on a couple of old singles").  It makes a lot more
sense to me that the twofer release duplicate the original Canadian
version of RoY than it does for Oglio to try to squeeze in what amounts to
a "bonus" track ("Antarctica") by using edits instead of LP versions or by
dropping other album tracks at random.  The original (non-US) tracking of
RoY may not be how *you* first heard the album, but at least it's how
*some* people heard it.  A tweaked tracking would have no claim to archival
legitimacy whatsoever.

Fortunately the question seems to be moot.

I was in a bigger record store (W.O.M. in Nueremberg) on saturday and
while browsing through the MwH section I found the Collection CD. So
it seems to have it made to Germany... They also had the other three
'available' MwH CDs (Adventures, Pop and Sideways). Quite expensive
($25) though.

I also found the Weird Al CD 'In 3D' with the 'Brady Bunch' on
it. Quite cool but too expensive ($30, ouch).

I don't have the clip I'm about to mention, but I remember it vividly.

Ivan and (I believe) Stefan were interviewed on MTV right as "Safety
Dance" was becoming popular. Ivan explained the "S" arm gesture from
the video to the veejay interviewer (I believe it was Mark Goodman).
Ivan was soft-spoken and bright. I remember being impressed by him,
which added to my enjoyment of "Safety Dance" even more.

Does anyone have any idea of how to find this interview? It would be
such a great addition to the already wonderful video we've got
brewing...

tapes , though.  Don't send me a check for a bit longer.  I'll make an
anouncement on the list when I'm ready to begin recording.  Its gonna take a
while, too.  I'm recording every tape individually from all the seperate
master vids, for the best possible picture quality.  You won't be

the US territory. The CD will likely first appear in Europe or another
overseas country.

Details have yet to be determined but the tracks will most likely
include those already discussed. Packaging will be similar to our
previous 2for1 series releases.

For those of us in the US and Canada we will have to rely on friends
outside North America for our copies for now.

I know it sucks. I tried to work for a worldwide release but it is just
not meant to happen. This is the first public announcement. Tell your
friends! :-)
