This is part of a rather extensive Rational Youth image gallery, but I
don't think there's anything else of direct MWH interest here. (Apart from
the fact that Tracy Howe is on most pictures...) Unless you're a RY fan
and/or involved in the Swedish synthpop scene (I am both - I've taken one
or two of the pics myself and know most of the Swedish fans depicted),
most of it is probably uninteresting.
Later (probably *much* later, as this is the first time I've posted
anything since February),

Date: 09 Jan 2000 15:46:50 -0800
I don't know if this has been discussed yet or not, but
here goes...
Last night I was going through a pile of old mail and
magazines, and I came across the latest issue of Lexicon.
(For those of you who don't know, Lexicon covers pop/synthpop
from the 80s, as well as the current synth/techno scene.)
The magazine published its list of the 100 best albums of
the 80s, as voted by Lexicon readers. I only had a chance
to skim the list, but was "Rhythm Of Youth" anywhere on
that list? I'm going to go back and look it over again
this evening, but I don't remember seeing it.
I was surprised by some of the entries, and their positions.
"Cupid & Psyche '85" by Scritti Politti was number 40
or something like that. The top spot was taken by
ABC's "Lexicon Of Love" (!). That surprised me.
Tears For Fears' "Songs From The Big Chair" and "The
Hurting" were both in the top 10. Talking Heads were
up there, as were Propoganda (another surprise).
I was disappointed that MWH didn't have a higher
spot in the standings.

Hi,
Thanks for paying attention. This was a list voted on by Lexicon readers and
by people on the web. I think I posted a message on this gorup, but may not
have (not all my messages seem to make it through).
I was suprised too, but hey, things happen. By the way, there is a
Scandanavian band called Chinese Detectives who have a new album out called
"Are Kisses Out of Fashion." The whole album is a bumch of covers of '80s
songs, it is very good. One of the covers is "Where Do The Boys Go?" It's not
bad, they have a female vocalist, so it sounds different enough from the
original, although they use mostly synths as well. Their website is
www.planetrecords.no. I guess that means they are from Norway, huh?
Thanks

I was a little skeptical at first...but now, since there has been a MAJOR
lack of interest in the e-mail group for me and it seems, most others, I have
rethought the idea of Men Without Hats covers done by people on the
list....I'd like to do one too....I know people who play instruments at my
school here so I'm sure I could sing.

Subject: (hats) The list seems to be seriously struggling
Date: 13 Jan 2000 02:33:25 EST
Are people alive here? Does anybody have ANY feelings at all on songs or are
they all exhausted??.....God, it's weird, I mean, I'm a pretty normal kid.
My friends laugh at me sometimes when I say I'm on an e-mail list for an 80's
band, but I actually used to like hearing what everybody had to say here.
It has just seemed to dry up so much recently....ever since we couldn't get
the bootlegs....although i'm only 21 (actually, i just turned 21 about 9
MINUTES ago) I've been on the list for over 3 years. We used to talk about
stuff, whether it was top 5 favorites, or what songs meant either literally
or emotinally. While, most of the time, I would read the e-mails, and
sometimes either not understand or not agree, often, I would hear songs in a
different way after reading some comments.
I'm not an e-mail junky so I understand if people don't check there mail
often....but send a comment or two (ESPECIALLY ALL OF THE NEW PEOPLE ON THIS
LIST)........you'll be amazed at the feedback you can get!
For example, why does Ivan say that whole "And the old man looked at the
young boy sharply in the eye...." speech on the live Great Ones
Remember.....was that cut off the original??

Collin, Happy Birthday!
I agree that the hats list does seem to be seriously struggling. But...it's
always seemed to come and go in spurts. I'm as much to blame as anybody
since I almost never post anything to the list and I've been on the list for
a couple of years now.
I actually have been wondering how many MWH fans have heard music from
Rational Youth. I haven't heard anything from them, but if they sound
anything like early MWH than I may have to purchase some of their cds.
Also, has anybody heard Stefan's new band's, The Makenzie Parker Gang, cd?
I've heard some of the samples of songs from his web site and quite liked
them, but haven't heard the full cd.
That's All Folks!

I had a pleasant surprise last week. There's a weird '80s group called Stump
that I like. Their music is very non-harmonic, and their lyrics are
sometimes goofy and sometimes surreal. The closest thing I can compare them
to is the Seinfeld theme song.
Anyway, I found a fellow Stump fan on the net, who mentioned that he had all
three of their videos. I had only heard about one of them, and had never
even seen it, so he offered to make me a copy of those three, and fill up
the rest of the tape with other videos he liked. There was a lot of
Kraftwerk, some NiN, Prodigy, Squeeze, and others, and the very last video
on it was Safety Dance!
It was cool to find another MWH fan in an unexpected place.

Definitely not; it's one of the classic synthpop albums. (I was one of the
hundreds of fans who sent an email to EMI Canada, begging for them to
release CWNL on CD, which they eventually did. Tracy Howe autographed my
copy dedicated "To my friend Anders"...) The new one, _To The Goddess
Electricity_, is pretty good too - sounds a bit like the old material
while also being modern. Don't know about _Heredity_ because I've never
even seen a copy... They've put a bunch of songs online at
www.mp3.com/rationalyouth - some seven or eight songs, I think. (Hope
you're not too annoyed with my trying to plug RY, but I *am* a loyal
fan and happen to think they're nice guys who deserve to sell a lot of
records...)

I remember covering "The Safety Dance" in high school... I sang to a
backing tape that a friend and I had recorded, using an Amiga 500 with
some SoundTracker clone and a live synthesizer (Roland JX-3P, I think?)
straight onto the tape - no overdubs! So, I sang, Jessica operated the
only stage light we had (a floor lamp) and Mats danced like an utter
loony. I think someone videoed it, but I've never seen a copy; the only
visible evidence I have is a photo *I* took of the audience! We got the
biggest applause of all the acts that night... (This proved to be the only
performance ever of Kentucky Fried Kitten, as we called ourselves; we
graduated six weeks later and moved to different parts of the country. I
don't think the three of us have been in the same room more than once
since then.)
If I ever find a copy - audio or video - of our performance, I promise
I'll sample it, make an MP3 file (or even an MPEG movie, if I can get a
good video grabber) and put it online for your possible amusement. Still
have the instrumental backing tape...

The one big issue I found with the covers is a lack of interest/motivation.
I TRIED to get a few of us together to do it, but I lacked the managerial
skills to keep everyone together...and the plan fell apart. I'd like to see
one done, but it is VERY hard to organize a bunch of people scattered across
the world. But, hey, I'm always up to give anyone a hand who wants to try!

Hats off to the new threads started lately!
Does anyone know where that line about the old man and the boy and the
village came from?
Thanks for the Rational Youth CWNL recommendation. I've been wanting to
try some old synth stuff and now I know where to start. If I was going to
buy a Kraftwerk album too, what should I get?
The inactivity on the list became apparent to me when November 14 passed
and no one mentioned "Men Without Hats Day." A couple years ago someone
on the list told us that a friend of his and he declared Nov. 14 "MWH Day"
in reference to the song "Things in my life" from ROY:
"Things like polyester pants and shoes don't make it easy to remember
Was it here or yesterday, or wasn't it the 14th of November?"
Then, on New Year's Eve, I played the entire "in the 21st Century" album
driving to my friend's house. It was fascinating to think that ten years
ago, as the 80s passed into the 90s, MWH was thinking about ten years
ahead, the new century. One of my all-time favorites is "Here Come the
90s", so here's to "dreaming on the other side" of the millenium.
I'm still interested in helping with the cover album, Aaron.

Hi, everybody! I expressed interest in the cover album concept before,
and now I'm relocating to New York City (from rural Minnesota) so it might
be easier for me to physically interact with anyone that's around NYC and is
also interested in covering MWH....I know the odds of finding a fellow
aspiring Hats cover band member isn't too good, but I thought I'd give it a
stab. Out of curiosity, do any of you hatters live in or around New York?
Just wondering....

Hi everybody!
It was great to read so many hats-related messages after a long time...
To celebrate this event, I decided to share a discography update with you:
Long time ago, German list member Frank Spinath (still around?) sent me a
photo copy of the back cover of his Folk3 CD. The Catalogue number is
CDST18, but it has "Printed in West-Germany" printed on it. This suggests
that there has been a German release of Folk3 on CD!!
However, I do not remember if he told me what was written on the disc
itself, or even what it was. So it might be possible, that the disc was
made in Canada, and only the cover was made in Germany.
Best regards,
Thomas Bieler

what? They weren't. "Rhythm Of Youth" was nowhre to be found.
I was really really surprised. And disappointed.

I was going to post a question on the list about that! :) I was wondering
what everyone thought about the album and it's message now that we've passed
the 90s since the album came out. I mean, it's pretty obvious we'd mention
that, right? :) I don't have any thoughts now except for some negative
ones; Ivan's message, to me anyway, was for the environment. Well, it was
in style to be green in the early 90s but I'm afraid it's old news today
( But I'm hoping we do change our minds this DECADE (not millennium becuase
that could mean 2999!). And be nicer to each other.

I think Ivan's partial message was about equal rights as well. It seems
we're doing better now than we were. Women are more widely accepted in the
workplace and in the military. They are also becoming more dominant in the
household. It seems we're on the right track. We're also TRYING to spruce
up our ecology, but I think that has a ways to go. All in all, Ivan's fears
were warranted, and even partially addressed. Also, his worries about the
government (Such as mentioned in I Like) which were warranted during the
Cold War have seemed to become less relavant. He should write a new song
for his next album about the media being the ones to spread the lies and
propaganda -=).

Hats fans, may I go off topic to ask for assistance?
I was thinking of doing a road trip through canada for the summer and i was
wondering if anybody on this list would be interested in putting up a 21 year
old boy and one of his friends for the night...i will be going through many
parts of canada so you may be one of the "lucky" towns.
I'm a normal guy, i'm clean, healthy, and comfortable sleeping on floors :-)
If you'll be home in canada this summer and you think MAYBE i could, please
e-mail me to let me know where you live and possibly some fun things to do in
the summer in canada...i'd bring some personally made cd's for everyone who
puts me up with my choice of hats songs :-) and artwork.
thanx.
