Hi Hatters!
I have a question regarding the Simpsons last night...
The scene where MWH was played involved Homer believing he had travelled back
in time (to 1939) because he was listening to an oldies show on the radio. His
friend Carl sent him forward in time by switching to a station playing "Safety
Dance".
Here's the question... why did playing "Safety Dance" make Homer believe he was
back in the present time? Shouldn't it have made him think that he was now in
the 80's? Or is this an observation that MWH are still part of the present as
far as popular music goes?
Or maybe I'm just reading too much into a cartoon.
Jeff

I had bought a couple MWH tees from the list a while back. My current
girlfriend knows how much i love the band, and has seen me wear the shirts.
Today, in her History class, they watched a movie on Chinese immigration.
In a scene where they showed a clip on the streets of New York, there was a
man wearing a MWH tee, exactly like the ones distributed on the list. She
asked her teacher to rewind the tape briefly so she coudl get a better look.
Sure enough, he was wearing the MWH logo on the front of his shirt. I
thought it was the strangest coincidence. Also, if anyone is still
distributing the MWH videos, let me know. I have a check waiting to have a
name and price put on it

i wish to clear the air by stating that i in NO WAY WHATSOEVER had anything to
do with the MWOH gag on a very recent episode of The Simpsons, but it is well

I've got the coolest saftey dance on MP3. But I have
no idea what it is or where it came from. I'd love to
have it identified. The MP3 is of only about 50% of the
song. If we figure out what it is, then we can get the
whole thing.

I've been a Hats fan for a couple of years now and I'm trying to get my
hands on as much stuff as I can. In particular, I've been looking for
cool or any t-shirts for a while. Also, since most record/cd stores
treat Ivan and Co. rather marginally and without the deserved respect,
it's quite easy to miss out on new releases like Ivan's solo album. So
I'd be very happy if you could update me on anything happening.

Sounds to me like you've got an acetate, which where test pressings
which could be made quickly to test sound quality. The material is very
soft and disintegrates after a few playings so don't play too often.
Also if you where to melt away the plastic you would find that the
record has been pressed onto a metal plate.
I would imagine yours is extremely rare, acetates are made
indiavidually. Its very likely yours is one of a kind !

I seem to remember one of the major record companies more bone headed

Ah this remind sme of a book I read about bootlegs. It talked a lot about
Beatles bootlegs and how they came from acetate discs made by the BBC
distributed all over the world to affiliates of the BBC World Service.
For anyone who's interested, these are the same recordings found on the
"Live at the BBC" set but there were much much more. These were also
called transcription discs if I remember correctly, and were intended
to be played once. A tiny BBC station somewhere in India might still have
some of these.

thats a wierd idea as the pressing machinery would have had to be
changed... Maybe they just wanted to leave the b-side blank so they
wouldn't have to record another track - but my experience of b-sides
suggests that that was probably a good idea anyway! (except 'Security' of
course!)
On the idea of 'wierd singles' I have a 10" single by the Fine Young
Cannibals which features 2 grooves on the a-side - not sure what that was
all for as both tracks are the same. Odd non the less...

Hello Everyone!
Some of you may subscribe to the "Consumable Online" mailing list which
reviews albums and concerts, and if you do, you may have noticed this in the
most recent issue (#171, March 19th).
The "Safety Dance" has made an appearance on yet another compilation put out
by Chronicles/PolyGram Records called, "The Electronic Eighties Volume 2".
(Yes, there is a volume 1, but it doesn't have any Hats-related material.)
If you want to read the review, go here:
http://www.westnet.com/consumable/1999/03.19/rev80s.html
The review itself doesn't mention Men Without Hats, they're only listed in
the track listing.
Just wanted to let all of you "completists" out there know that you must
rush out and buy another CD that has Men Without Hats on it. It doesn't
say, but the version on the CD is probably the so-called "Extended" version
which spells out "S.A.F.E.T.Y" at the beginning. Just my guess...
Take care,
Steve

You can always go to
http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/translate?/ (you may have to
remove the trailing "?") to translate between English and German, French,
Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian.
However, I ran your text through the translator, and it didn't produce
anything very understandable. It doesn't do too well with poetry or lyrics.
It is good for a laugh sometimes, though! :-)
