Hey, was that a tumbleweed I saw? Slow times on the old GC list. =
Anyway, I've been reading the Dread Empire books. I'd been saving them =
for a rainy day (having read the BC books twice, the Garrett books once, =
and most of his one-offs), and finally got around to them this week. =
They're a bit rougher than I expected, especially at first, though by =
"All Darkness Met" Glen seems to have hit his stride.
Like a lot of people before me, I'm enjoying Mocker quite a bit. As I =
read, I like to "hear" the characters speak, and I was wondering how you =
all hear him. I started hearing him with an Indian (i.e., Indian =
subcontinent, not Native American) accent, and ever since I can't shake =
it. When you read the books, what does he sound like in your head?
Cheers,
LJ

LJ,
I always thought Mocker had a Russian accent, much like Manny in
Heinlein's "Moon is Harsh Mistress".

Steve, that's a good take on it. Maybe that will help me shake the Indian
accent I keep hearing. He is a great character--for me by far the most
memorable of the series (three books in, that is--I might change my mind
later on).

Subject: (glencook-fans) SFBC edition
The latest SFBC offering includes a reprint of The Garrett Files (which
includes the first three Garrett stories), and Garrett, P.I., which covers
Old Tin Sorrows, Dread Brass Shadows, and Red Iron Nights.
If only someone would tell the cover artists that Garrett doesn't LIKE
hats, it'd be perfect.
Perhaps of more esoteric interest is this Author's Note from Glen Cook himself:
Garrett has seen it happen. Exaggerate a little here, overlook something
there. There is no Absolute Truth or Absolute Reality, anyway. That Truth
is whatever the majority on hand want it to be.
Real Truth is egalitarian and democratic and not at all compelled to
correspond to the world in any useful way. Truth has no respect for Right,
What's Best, or Needs Must. Real Truth is a dangerous beast in need of
caging in even the quietest of times.
Ask any prince or priest.
Real Truth was the First Traitor.
----Glen Cook
David
