In a way I'm lucky.
The local university has an excellent SF collection - they are one of
the holding libraries for SFWA and have been donated large collection
over the years. In their special collection are rare Lovecrafts, Weird
Tales magazines, and countless treasures that you can arrange to read in
the building.
For the general circulation paperbacks they have the books rebound as
hardcovers - extending the book's life. Personally I only have a few of
the Dread Empire novels, but they have the entire collection in great
condition.

I remember reading (many years ago) the press release from BTRC
regarding using their CORPS rules set for a BC game - any word on why
that fell through?

I'd start with the Prequels.
Unlike some series the prequels mesh well with the series - I read them
in that order and it was hard to believe when I found out that they'd
been written afterwards. Unlike many writters Cook was able to pull off
writting the books in non chronological order and have things still make
sense - there are no inconsistencies that I could spot.
Just my opinion, and congratulations - you're about to start one of the
better series out there.

When he's talking about the rape / murder of the amazon solders in
Winter's Camp he explains why he rarely portrays the company
realistically - at an early age he was taught to always speak well of
his family and the early lessons die hardest. Then he goes off on a
rant about Raven's romanticism.
Which is interesting, considering on the trip south he sees a woman who
looks like his grandmother use to, thinks it's probably his sister, and
doesn't say anything to her. He says something like "I am dead to those
people and coming home as an imperial legislate wouldn't change that."
I've always wondered why Croaker left his job as a well trained doctor
to join the company, but it's probably a mundane sordid tale envolving
either a girl or the law (or both - maybe he earned his pyscho eyes?).

Cool - thanks to all who responded for the advice. I think I'll stick w/
"A Shadow of All Night Falling" (and read them all in the order they
were published) ... if I want to read them in the other order later I
can always do that then ...
Thx,
Bill

Subject: Dread Empire - Prequels first, or no?
Greetings,
Long time lurker, very infrequent poster ... need some advice from
y'all.
I'm about to start reading the Dread Empire series. I have the prequels
(in total I have "The Fire in His Hands", "With Mercy Towards None", "A
Shadow of All Night Falling", "October's Baby", "All Darkness Met",
"Reap the East Wind", and "An Ill Fate Marshalling" ... took me some
time to get them all--not as long as it took to get "Doomstalker", but
that's another story <grin>).
Here's the question: do I first read "The Fire in His Hands" or "A
Shadow of All Night Falling" (and then come back and pick up the
prequels later, I.e., to read them in the order as they were written and
published) ... or, does it really matter?
L8r,
Bill

Any recommendations on where to start with Discworld? I read one
a long time ago and wasn't that enamoured so I haven't picked up another
since. I can't remember the title of the one I read, unfortunatley.
