I use amazon.com and go from there. I get most of them for a buck or less...

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll have to see which of the earlier
books I can find.
My local used book store didn't have much. Does Glen still run that
service where he
sells books directly?

Another similar series to Cook's Garrett is written by Spider Robinson.
Haven't read them but noticed them at the book store. Scifi detective?

I like the books and they seem to get better as the series goes
along. Butcher stays true to the Dresden character - he's pigheaded,
noble and stubborn, which gets him into all sorts of trouble. The
most recent one, Summer Knight, was the best of the lot, just a
roller-coaster ride that never gave poor Dresden a chance to catch
his breath. There's a review posted at the website below, if you're
interested.

But seriously. These books are different from BC. If you really ONLY
like BC and wish more writers would write just like BC, stop reading
this message now and go back to BC. Be glad you found your heaven.
These are not sitcom, though, nor does everything return to
normal--actually there is quite a bit of book-to-book continuity. One of
the grimmest, darkest books Cook has written (my opinion) is the Garrett
novel Old Tin Sorrows. That one is no sitcom.
But to each his own. I'll say this about the Garrett books too: they
are pretty consistent. If you don't like the first one or two, chances
are good you won't like any of the rest. Again, my opinion.

Subject: RE: (glencook-fans) recommendation on Garrett books
There are three authors whose works I feel very strongly about. I get the
latest one as soon as I can possibly afford it (although with Drake, for
instance, I am getting the Isles in hardcover, and the Belisarius in
softcover, for financial reasons). Their books vanish into the "I've read
it" category way too fast. I have a problem when reading many books, that my
emotional state is ruled by what's going on in the book. This can make it
difficult for me to deal with my real life when the characters in the book
I'm reading are going through particularly difficult moments. For whatever
reason, none of these three authors wreck my emotional stability (and in the
case of Drake and Brust, often help it).
David Drake - My very favorite author in all of creation - anything with his
name on it I've read or am just waiting for the $$ to be able to afford to
do so :)
Steven Brust - the Drageara books is all of his I've gotten to so far
Glen Cook - Black Company and Garrett particularly, though I've enjoyed
anything with his name on it that I've read.
Laurell K. Hamilton sort of falls into this category: her Anita Blake books
really grab me when I read them, and I will continue to read the Anita Blake
stories... however, there are elements in Ms. Hamilton's works that I cannot
abide - namely, what her works do to my emotional state, as above - and so
when the Anita Blake books are done, I will breathe a sigh of relief.
My sitcom comment was regarding the other author's series listed in
connection with Garrett, not the Garrett books. I've greatly enjoyed the
Garrett books.

Gotcha. I probably read your post too quickly to pick that up. I have
read the first two of the Butcher books and enjoyed them quite a bit. I
did not have the sense that everything wrapped up nicely in them at all.
To the contrary, characters die, nurse grudges, etc. I have not been
tracking him down but when I see him on a sweep through the used
bookstore, I've been picking up his stuff (initially because of the GC
endorsement). You might still give him a try.
I also read most everything by David Drake and had the good luck to have
a passing acquaintance with him during my stay in Chapel Hill, NC.
Ironically, I did not read him much when I was there but read it all
now. Did you know about his website and mailing list? Not a fan list,
the one that he actually writes and sends. http://www.david-drake.com
has a way to subscribe.
Okay, Eric, I know I'm OT, I'll stop now ;) Anyone who spools up a Drake
thread from this is on their own.

Subject: RE: (glencook-fans) recommendation on Garrett books
There are three authors whose works I feel very strongly about. I get
the
latest one as soon as I can possibly afford it (although with Drake, for
instance, I am getting the Isles in hardcover, and the Belisarius in
softcover, for financial reasons). Their books vanish into the "I've
read
it" category way too fast. I have a problem when reading many books,
that my
emotional state is ruled by what's going on in the book. This can make
it
difficult for me to deal with my real life when the characters in the
book
I'm reading are going through particularly difficult moments. For
whatever
reason, none of these three authors wreck my emotional stability (and in
the
case of Drake and Brust, often help it).
David Drake - My very favorite author in all of creation - anything with
his
name on it I've read or am just waiting for the $$ to be able to afford
to
do so :)
Steven Brust - the Drageara books is all of his I've gotten to so far
Glen Cook - Black Company and Garrett particularly, though I've enjoyed
anything with his name on it that I've read.
Laurell K. Hamilton sort of falls into this category: her Anita Blake
books
really grab me when I read them, and I will continue to read the Anita
Blake
stories... however, there are elements in Ms. Hamilton's works that I
cannot
abide - namely, what her works do to my emotional state, as above - and
so
when the Anita Blake books are done, I will breathe a sigh of relief.
My sitcom comment was regarding the other author's series listed in
connection with Garrett, not the Garrett books. I've greatly enjoyed the
Garrett books.
