Eric,
I've read, I think, 5 Garrett books now, including the first three, the
fifth, and the one that came out last year. And I have yet to see any
iota of sense in the name "Glory Mooncalled"--for instance, any
indication that anyone else in the series has a first name which is an
abstract noun or a second name which is a (very strange) participle.
Am I missing something?
Steve

I've got the feeling that Glory Mooncalled is an assumed name, or a name
given to it's holder by a less advanced people (like the centaurs?).
Remember that the general switched sides after he was backstabbed, maybe
he renounced his name when that happened?
Glory - well, he's a great general and earns lots of glory.
Mooncalled - Called by the spirits of the moon? The gods of the moon?
The moon as a symbol of change? This is why I think it's a name from a
less advanced people; I can see some tribe somewhere saying the general
is mooncalled and it sticking.
Maybe at one time he was General Fred Common, Holder of Glory and
declared Mooncalled by the Great Centaur Council and after he switched
sides decided he didn't want to deal with relatives of anyone that
General Fred Common had killed so just used his titles?
Or maybe it's a warname - he is a merc and might not tales of his
exploits to travel home. Since few (except his loyal troops) knew what
he looked like if he had to drop from sight he could hide by using his
real name and avoid truth spells that way.
Or maybe his parents (Mr. and Mrs. Mooncalled) just wanted to inspire
him to seek Glory and gave him the name the way people used to use
virture names like Hope, Faith, Patience, etc? I don't think there's
anything in any of the books that explains it.
As for descriptive names - I seem to remember a few that were in other
languages. "Dawn's Mercy/Madness" comes to mind.

That it is likely his nom du guerre, i.e. an assumed name designed to make him
sound more impressive?

That's what I thought. There was a bit in one of the latter books (in
which Garrett is tossed into the mental ward) commenting on the practice
of taking such names.

I only read one Garret book and that was ages ago.
Which title should I begin with? Are they in chronological form or can I
just jump in with the latest?
Thanks.

They are chronological and really blend well together in order. The next
book is usually always set-up pretty extensively in the book before it. Also
all the secondary character arcs span 2-3+ books, so you'll miss out on
that.
Did anyone else complete Angry Lead Skies yet?

*I think that some of the alluded to sex scenes were "interesting", I liked
VERY MCUH the fact that Pular was in this one. Cook did a good job I think
in rounding out several characters, and still managing to incorporate
several old reliables (Saucerhead, Morley, Winger) without going overboard.
I think he's setting it up for a pretty good conclusion, the ending was
interesting what with the dialogue between Old Man Tate, Garrett and Tinnie.
Okay, I'm rooting that he settles down with tinnie...I admit to a bit of a
bias in that I myself married a red-head...no regrets!
Whats your take on it?

I agree 98% with what you said, BUT (and this is a big but for me) I'm not
sure if the cross-cross-genre (a fantasy-mystery-sci-fi experience) thing
really worked for me. I think Cook handled it about as deftly as you can,
but these are tricky waters.
The whole joy of of these novels for me is the cynical, gritty look at life
in a fantasy world - and the MYSTERY that unfolds. Now, while a saucer full
of Greys WOULD be a mystery to Garrett, it's not really a mystery to me. And
I am always the last person to "get" the mystery plot. Maybe this is because
I've read a lot more Sci-Fi, but really...
For that reason alone, the enjoyment I normally get out of these books was a
bit diminished.
However, I did really enjoy the unexpected developments of the plot. I'm all
for banging aliens, and the sex scenes were a good reversal for the usual
anal-probe stereotype. Also a good flop on the Mars Needs Women trope. And
that out of all that super alien technology revealed to them, they get the
pencil and the tricycle. Perfect! [and advanced gearing! this is alluded to
and could rally pave the way in this world for a lot of technological
developments, but that's really another post]
Silver Elves aside, the Pular plotline was brilliantly executed and
memorable.
If there is only one more book, Cook really does have to tie up a bunch of
plotlines around whatever main plot the next one's going to be. 1) the whole
Secret Police thread is probably going to come to a head around Chodo's
party or something similar. And that should also wrap the Belinda thread
too. 2) in order for Garrett and Tinnie to really cement their relationship,
she's going to be put in Jeopardy again. 3) I'm not sure what's going to
happen to Morley, but I'd guess he will probably legitimize himself more.
A really dark conclusion would probably kill off some of the main
characters, which would be interesting.
And one final note on series chronology- In the latest book Old Man Tate
says that Tinnie and Garrett have been an item for "several years" - yet
Garrett is STILL 30. I'm guessing that although the series is very
"realistic," this element comes from the pulp mystery side of the coin where
time passes and Garrett ages like the Hardy Boys- or any other series
character.
I find this choice rather odd though, as each book is not interchangeable,
but follows a strict order.
My pet theory is that Garrett has been knocked on the head so many times
(he's rendered unconscious at least 3 times a book- another holdover from
the Noir side) that he forgot he is now 34.
Time to stop rambling on and on.

Thank you, I mean him.
Hm... That's interesting. Russian translation of english word "Glory" is
"Slava" / /inthe book he is "Slavy"// , but it "Slava" is also pet name for
russian
name "Vyacheslav". "Slavy" is "Slava" stylizated like... polish name... or
czech. About "Mooncalled"... I don't know, why russian translator translate
it as "Duraleynik". Translation of russian word "duraley" is "fool". Maybe
translator understood "Mooncalled" like "sleep-walker, somnambulist" //
russian translation of "sleep-walker" is "lunatic"//...
