I'd like to recommend the author Guy Gavriel Kay. I am currently reading
his book, The Lions Of Al-Rassan, and I love it. Very gritty, realistic
characters, complex plot. Just a good story. It reminds me very much of
Cook's work, but remains unique in it's own right.

Anymore information about this future Cook novel? I'm assuming by the =

Kay is outstanding. My favorite by him is A song for Arbonne. Very good
read. The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy is outstanding too, and so is Tigana.
Can't go wrong with any of them.
Lions of Al-Rassan reminded me quite a bit of the Empire of the East
series...similar feel.

There's a British series by Stan Nicholls which is written from the orc's
point-of-view. I haven't been able to get a hold of copy yet though so I
don't know if it fits your criteria.

There's also "Grunts" by Mary Gentle - written from orc's perspective
and full of dark humor, but it's more of a parody than a book in
its own right.
I just read "Fortune's stroke" by Eric Flint and David Drake - it has
a lot in common with BC as far as the strategic planning
and warcraft are concerned.

The newest duology by Guy Gavriel Kay, 'The Sarantine
Mosaic' (Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors) is
freakin' amazing! It really blew me away! I love all
of his stuff, but I think the Mosaic is his best work
to date. If you like High Fantasy, start with Fionovar
Tapestry, otherwise start with Tigana (my second
favourite). Save Sarantine Mosaic for last (save the
best . . .)
