  59. It might vary according to where the story is published.  I would assume 
  60. that if the copyright is not still held by the publisher, it is held by 
  61. Glen Cook.  In The Wind (in Space Dogfights anthology) for example is 
  62. copyrighted to Glen and printed with the author's permission.  But Song 
  63. From a Forgotten Hill (in Clarion anthology) is copyrighted to Worlds of 
  64. Tomorrow (and who knows where the copyright has landed since then, assuming 
  65. that Worlds of Tomorrow is no longer a corporate entity).

  67. I've seen the stuff on Baen's free library and I agree with the sentiment, 
  68. but for such publishing to happen, Glen would have to agree with the 
  69. sentiment and moreover, I think he'd have to be convinced that free short 
  70. fiction on the web would turn into book sales. With Mercy Toward None is 
  71. the only Baen pub that Glen has that I know of and I believe it is also 
  72. OOP.  Is anyone other than Baen trying out the free library idea.

  74. I am in the process of trying to collect the various short pieces as it is 
  75. and it is slow going.  A lot of these pubs are pretty hard to find.  Found 
  76. a copy of the first Clarion anthology the other day and based on the 
  77. various markings on the book, I've gotta be owner number 3 or 4 for this 
  78. copy.  Pages are pretty yellow, getting that old paperback aroma about it. 
  79.  I would not mind seeing these stories collected in a single volume, I'd 
  80. gladly pay for that.

  120. popped into my head...

  122. Raven and the Captain were tight.  Croaker gets the feeling that they are
  123. kindred spirits.  Speculation is as follows :

  125. 1.  Educated
  126. 2.  Held military position either past or present (Raven under the
  127. Limper/Lady)
  128. 3.  Mid-high birth (this is an assumption based off the way the Cap's
  129. character is painted as well as the fact he is educated)
  130. 4.  Sorcerous training?
  131.  
  132. #4 is what hit me.  All their time together, private conversations, etc...
  133. Raven never did openly display sorcerous ability until he displayed his
  134. knowledge while reading Bomanz's writings.
  135.  
  136. The Captain never did display any ability.....except in a single situation.
  137. He flew a carpet.  Albeit poorly.  But he flew a carpet.  If I recall
  138. correctly, he's the only non-sorceror ever to fly one.  (flying sticks don't
  139. count as they appear to be magically embued mechanical devices)
  140.  
  141. This was spurred by curiosity and has no real research to back it up, so
  142. feel free to shoot it down or support the theories as you see fit.  I'm just
  143. sticking a spoon in and stirring things up to see what settles out.

  160. I find it an interesting thread, but I seem to remember earlier instances
  161. where both showed (albiet minor) displays of magical talent...I think one
  162. such reference was when the Captain had smoke literally pouring out of his
  163. ears.  And Raven seemed to have some small talent as he could produce a
  164. knife with uncanny speed, even when he was weak as a kitten.

  226. That's an interesting point, and it makes sense, too.  I don't remember 
  227. much about the posts, though, but wasn't there some discussion about how 
  228. they differed from carpets?  Plus, there was never any indication of verbal 
  229. commands to make the carpets take off...they just did so at the will of the 
  230. one commanding it.  Hmmm...

  342. It may be that he is not magically incline naturally but being around mages
