Good. I'm glad to hear that the actual covers will be better.

Note: The cover I see in the mailing for the "Annals of the Black Company"
(the first 3 books) is the same as was originally on the book way back in
the mid-80's. It was cool enough for me to buy it as a teenager... now,
if only I hadn't let my brother borrow it... well, nice chance now to get
another copy.

I finished it last week - for the third time. My opinion of it has only
changed slightly. It is still a VERY strong science fiction book, but I
think it gets itself lost in the weeds of the clones. The fact that a
character might or might or might not be themselves, but their "OTHER" got
very confusing in some tightly choreographed parts.
The cat-and-mouse routine at the end was wonderful, superbly painted with me
never knowing whom to root for.

You thoughts echo mine. So much so, it seems eerie. The whole
numbers-as-names thing became distracting but I liked the unspoken question of
"which is better, the unknown future or the devil you know?" The reincarnation
of the troops from memory banks was pretty damn spiffy as well.
I will admit it was the first Cook book I've ever encountered a little bit of
difficulty getting into at first. Once it got rolling I was caught up, though.

Yeah, I've found that most Cook books I've read start out like you
should already know what is going on. It makes it kind of confusing, but
it doesn't take very long to get a handle on things. Once that happens,
it quickly becomes apparent that they are the best books ever.
The "others" were kind of confusing toward the beginning of the story,
but as it progressed, I found myself wondering how I could have ever been
confused.
I liked Jo Klass a lot. I could easily picture her as a member of the
Black Company.

Yes, Eric, that is the artwork that was in the SFBC catalog. Glad you
could find where it came from. It is an impressive piece of art.
Have a good day.

I just finished it (for the first time) this week. I have to agree
somewhat. I also thought that there were a bit too many characters
introduced initially. I had trouble keeping everyone straight, especially
between readings.

I really found this interesting in that I really enjoyed the story, wanted
to know what would happen next, and wasn't really pulling for one side or
the other (although I was probably leaning towards the Guardships...). I
think this is the one thing Cook does in a lot of his stories - he shows the
world from both sides, and shows both the redeeming and unredeeming values
of each sides.

Yeah, but Croaker as Alexander the Great?
I guess it's better than Elric.
What is the picture of Glittering Stone II?

Dragon Never Sleeps spoilers...

I think that's a good way of looking at it. Cook almost always
requires his readers to pay close attention, especially at first as the
characters live their lives in the way they always did even before the
reader came along. Sometimes the background becomes clear through
the characters actions or dialogue but it usually in a way that is
moving the story forward rather the giving expostion. And sometimes
the background remains a mystery.
It is often somewhat confusing but I think there is power in
that style as well. You end up knowing the characters "as they are"
rather than as instruments that tell a story. Also, it gives a lot
of satisfaction as you figure out what's going on. I've come to enjoy
that style very much.
Dragon Never Sleeps is one of my favorites, but it does throw
you to the wolves at first. You have to accept that you're not going
to remember every character after the first time you meet them. But
by the end you've come to know most of them very well and you're
totally immersed in the story.

Has anyone ever found any Black Company fan art on the internet? The only
one I've ever managed to find is one of Lady, and it's several years old...
I have some myself that I'm thinking about putting up when I have the time,
but it would be nice to see if anyone else has any, too....

Maybe that's not Croaker. What if it's Blade? Or one of the other boys?
As for the cover art of G.S. II, I'll have to double check the SFBC
catalog when I get back to the apartment tonight. However, I *think* that
it's the same as the G.S.I book.

Blade was black. The long blonde hair reminds me of
Willow Swan, but he was definitely no Alexander the
Great. I'm not sure why this SFBC uses these types of
paintings for Black Company covers? Must be the
cheapest way to do it.
