  23. To my mind, the similarities of Martin and Cook lie mostly in the
  24. realism (though set in a fantasitc universe): the noir-quality, the grittiness.

  26. I think Cook has the better of it, in that he concentrates almost wholly
  27. on the soldiers' points of view (though including high officers), where
  28. Martin expends many scenes among European-style royalty--thrones and
  29. castles, the nobly born--as well as the seamier side of life.

  31. But what I said above about Cook is really applicable only to the Black
  32. Company series.  Maybe its worthwhile making comparison with, say, his
  33. Dread Empire series.  The later books in that series ("Reap the East
  34. Wind", "An Ill Fate Marshalling") also have a heavily realistic feel to
  35. them, I think; and they are the best of that series, in my opinion. 
  36. They, too, focus on war, though politics and diplomacy are important as
  37. well.  But I wouldn't call them gritty.

  39. Any other opinions on Dread Empire (especially the last books) as
  40. compared to Black Company?  Is there similarity or not?  If there is, is
  41. that what makes the DE books good?

  61. Cook's work scales properly, Martin lacks a good understanding of unit sizes, 
  62. etc. and it drives me crazy (how many men are there in the northern barrens 
  63. guarding how many miles and how many recruits do they get a year to replace 
  64. how many casualties ... Cook's work would have all those numbers add up 
  65. correctly, Martins is pretty random).

  150. I was thinking the same thing... 'Thrones' is fascinating to read if you like 
  151. the political side of war, where 'Black Company' focuses more on the guys in 
  152. the trenches. 'Thrones' is a great book, just a different style than 'Black 
  153. Company'... a *lot* longer, too :)

  168.  I found that, within the first few pages of A Game of Thrones, I *knew* it
  169. was going to be a good book.  The same thing happened with Glen Cook's books
  170. the first time I read them.  I don't think I can pinpoint exactly what it is
  171. that gives me that certainty, maybe simply the fine craftsmanship of the
  172. writing.  It happens all too rarely.
