Subject: (glencook-fans) books by Glen
Date: 07 Oct 2001 12:11:07 -0500
Hi, all,
Well, turns out I did go to Archon on Saturday, and I spoke briefly with
Glen. Points of interest:
His new police-procedural book is called "The Butcher's Apprentice". He
said his agent doesn't really like it--finds the characters engaging,
but... He has no idea what will be done with the book.
Besides the Garrett book coming out spring of 2002 ("Angry Lead Skies"),
he expects one more--the last. I commented to him that what I have
liked most in the 4 I've read (the first three plus "Faded Steel Heat",
#9) is the political arc that develops in the series as a whole. He
replied that he found the background increasingly of interest, and that
it is the finishing up of that background political stuff that will
constitute the end of the series.
Missing copies of older Garretts? I'm afraid there's no good news from
Glen: He says they're all out of print save for the most recent, and
the only oldies he has are the first, "Sweet Silver Blues", and the one
I picked up, "Dread Brass Shadows" (#5)
About the Black Company: He said he knows just where he wants to take
the story, but it's very much on the back burner, and he has no idea
when he'll be able to get to it. Things with higher priority are the
last Garrett book and the new trilogy he's contracted to write (a "fat
book" trilogy).
At the con, George R. R. Martin conducted an interview of Robert Jordan.
The subject of long series came up, and Jordan commented that he'd seen
a web-based poll asking the question, which of these do people think are
likely to be completed first:
a) Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series
b) Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series
c) King's "Dark Tower" series
d) Cook's "Dread Empire" series (or maybe it was "Black Company"?)
e) the heat death of the universe
The poll thus far records (e) as having a 5-1 lead over any of the other answers...
Steve

Subject: (glencook-fans) Reviews of the Black Company?
Date: 08 Oct 2001 14:32:32 EDT
Folks,
On my 3rd read through of the series in about 4 years, I was wondering if
Cook is big enough to have reviews done of his works. I noted that there are
exerps (?) from Publisher's Weekly and Library Journal on the back of _Water
Sleeps_. Are those full reviews on anyone's website? (Naturally, they're
probably on the Publisher's and the Library's sites but I'm lazy enough to
want them both at one location.)
I noted some reviews on the "xmission.com/`shpshtr/gc" site but they seem
more of the "joe's website/Here's some books I like". Those are helpful and
appreciated but I'm more interested in what the publishing industry thinks of
the Black Company.
Granted, they're not as vital to western civilization as the latest Tom
Clancy or Robert Jordan tomes, nor will _Soldiers Live_ be an Oprah Book of
the Month....
But I think they're pretty damn cool!
Thanks.
Brian

Robert Jordan writes bubble gum for blonde cheerleaders. I'm surprised
his name is even mentioned in this esteemed list.

This is not a discussion list for Robert Jordan.

Thanks Steve, nice info. It's pretty sad when your own agent
isn't a bit more enthusiastic about publishing your latest book. It
sounds like he needs a "non-sci-fi" agent for the police procedural
book.
The "fat book trilogy" sounds interesting though. :-)

Picked up a new roleplaying game - Exalted by White Wolf - and found
Cook listed in the suggested reading. The first Black Company book is
listed (complete with ISBN) with the blurb:
"The Lady and The Ten Who Were Taken are excellent inspirations for
_Exalted_. Shapeshifter would make an Lunar Exalted and The Lady would
make a very fine Solar. Also, the slow but very powerful magic of this
world is a good inspiration for Storytellers trying to imagine what
_Exalted's_ socery looks like."
Other books listed include _Night's Master_ by Tanith Lee, _Hawkmoon_ by
Michael Moorcook, and _The Complete Pegana_ by Lord Dunsany.

Hey all
Quiet time on the Glen front this month. Ok then.
I have been talking to someone who is going to make Black Company
banners. But the one last described as the original in Soldiers Live has
raised questions.
How are the hanged men grouped? Or are they? If any one has ideas or
thought I would like to hear them. Thanks

Subject: (glencook-fans) Trade Anyone?
Date: 01 Nov 2001 00:11:23 EST
Okay, so I am looking for a copy of the third Starfishers (and the second
also, but I've read this). They pop up on eBay every now and again, but since
I have dupes of many I thought maybe someone else would be in the same boat
and want to trade. I have extras of A Matter of Time, Swordbearer, most of
the Garrets, all of the BCs, and some of the Dread Emipres (but probably not
interested in getting rid of any of these last ones). I also have a ton of
other SF, so a want is always welcome.
Thanks.
christopher....
