Just finished reading a book by Margaret Weis that included a mercenary
company, and as I read it I couldn't help comparing it with Cook's
books.
Margaret Weis is a good author - when it comes to shades of grey she's
done a lot of exploring of the area between good and evil - or at least
more than many fantasy authors. The book in question (_Brothers in
Arms_ - WARNING - SPOILER for this book included in this message) builds
the foundation of character's slow decent into evil.
With this in mind I'd had hopes of the quality of her mercenary
company. It wouldn't be the Black Company, but it might have
reflections of it. Alas, I was sorely disappointed.
Weis' mercenaries were, well, unreal. Implausible. Nice Guys one and
all.
How nice?
They switch sides in the middle of a battle so they can be on the 'good
guys' side - which is out numbered and unable to pay them.
When they get backstabbed by the bad guys who were their employers (yes,
they discovered the employers were the bad guys) they are shocked and
outraged. They ask themselves how any employer (including an evil one)
could treat a merc company that way.
In short, as I read I kept mentally comparing this book with the Black
Company, and it came up short.

I'd been disapointed before in what I saw as the shallowness of the
characters Weis (and Hickman, when they wrote together) created. Even
though I enjoyed the first 6 books of the dragonlance series, though haven't
liked anything since then, I though that good guys and bad guys both were
pretty 2 dimensional.
As far as having any 'historical' type authenticity with regards to a
mercenary company, no, I'm not surpised at your findings.

Unfortunately there aren't many authors who develope characters like
Cook does, and fewer living (still miss Zelazny). That said, most of
the non Weis Hickman books in that series were based one dimensional
versions of the characters that Weis and Hickman introduced. They
returned to that series as partners for two books - and these showed
some growth in character development.
Unfortunately Wies is now writting with her husband as opposed to
Hickman, and some of the polish appears to be gone. With an entire merc
company to play with she didn't really develop anyone beyond the
reoccuring characters. Most (if not all) of the merc characters could
be summed up a sentence a piece - all of the sterotypes are there.
As a 'heroic good guys vs the villians' novel it wasn't bad, but since
the merc company got me thinking of Cook and that got me thinking about
what the book was lacking (realism, plausibility, etc) in terms of its
mercenaries.

Weis and Hickman have been writing together. They are currently at
work on another Dragonlance trilogy (of which two books are now
published).
As far as their writing goes...I really only enjoyed the first three
DL books. But not everyone can (or should) write like Cook.

I'm finishing "Death Gate" series (by Weis and Hickman) right now -
if this is an example of one of their better works - it's pretty
two-(or maybe even one-)dimensional...

I would have to agree. I stopped liking their works
after Legends series. The Rose of the Prophet series
was ok but the Darksword series was not too good and
the Death Gate Cycle was muddled and lacked direction.
ALL the books since then have been aweful. Their
return to dragonlance has not come close to drawing me
in, their 1 shot follow up to Darksword was pitiful.
I think it more to do with myself than their writing
though. I think i have matured as a reader and "need a
little more substance" to my reading. These days their
are only 2 authors that do that for me and they are
Glen Cook and George R. R. Martin. I strongly suggest
any Cook fans to give GRRM's series "Song of Ice and
Fire" a try. It is, in my current opinion, the best
fantasy reading I have read in my life. Glen Cooks BC
is the Best Series I have ever read. Agghh. If the two
of them came out with a book the same day and I only
had 30bucks to spend I would pull my hair out and
donate blood or whatever to get them both. heh.
I think the ending of The Black Company was the most
satisfying ending to a series I could have imagined
and that is why i hope he does not try to continue the
Company in its present incarnation and goes back to
the very beginning of the company.
heh. just my 2 cents.

Hmmm. I'm with you in agreement regarding the best damn series I've ever
read is The Black Company. (Okay...Zelazny's Amber Series is second
place...not too close, but close.) I do however, hope that Cook continues
the series, as I think a next book would be MUCH different from Soldiers
Live, and it would Rock. Throughout the BC series, Cook has pulled it off
several times, each time leaving me in speechless awe at how they all really
DO seem to mesh, though not at first.
My .02 worth.

Abso-damn-lutely. I read the DL series in high school
(early on at that) and I really enjoyed. Read through
it again last year and could only shake my head. I
read 'The Black Company' soon after DL, and was in
awe. Read it again last year. Still in awe.

I agree with the two statement, but I've got to turn
people on to Guy Gavriel Kay. Excellent writing,
amazing characters, fully-realized settings,
compelling plots, Guy Kay has got it all. Start off
with 'Tigana'. If you dig high fantasy, and need your
pseudo-Tolkien kick, check out 'The Fionovar Tapestry'
(also, he helped Christopher Tolkien compile and edit
'the Silmarillion'). His recent duology, 'The
Sarantine Mosaic' is astounding. Seriously, check him
out! His other books include "A Song for Arbonne' and
"Lions of Al-Rassan'.

One of my favorite things about GC's work is the settings--the characters
don't just exist in a vacuum.
For similar reasons, I recommend Paula Volsky's work. Start with Illusion
and its sequel, then read the White Tribunal. Real characters in real places
with real problems--that's why I read fantasy.

Greetings!
Some time ago, I auctioned off most of my spare autographed Glen Cook books,
when I needed some cash. Well, I need cash again, and I have three
duplicates left... so here I go again.
These books were autographed by Glen for me at Chattacon about three years
ago. They are all in pretty good shape - been read a couple of times, covers
still glossy, no damage except the typical minor amounts of corner and edge
wear you would expect from a book that has been read a couple of times.
I will be taking separate bids only - please no group bids. I will run this
auction for one week, until the evening of the 12th. I will notify each
bidder if he or she is outbid.
Postage will be 'actual cost', wherever you live. I'll accept check or money
order, but I'll wait a week for personal checks to clear before mailing.
Insurance at the pleasure of the buyer.
I think that covers everything.
The books:
The Black Company
Shadows Linger
Cold Copper Tears
I also have a non-autographed copy of An Ill Fate Marshaling, in similar
shape as the others, but the front cover has been bent about halfway over,
through the long axis of the front cover, and has a crease to show it.
Please respond directly to my email, pdmohney@aol.com.
Thanks,
Pete Mohney

I would recommend reading Silver Spike, then read Shadow
Games and the rest of the series from that point forward.
Shadow Games and Silver Spike are more or less happening
at the same time but in different places. They are all
still good, no matter which order you read them in,
especially now that they are all published and you don't
have to wait years between books.

Definitely read Silver Spike. Since it's more or less a "stand-alone" novel,
and the story takes place about the same time as shadow games, now would be
the best time read it. Also, the Shadow Games storyline continues right into
Dreams Of Steel with no break in the action.
Enjoy.

Read Silver Spike first, because it definitively ends, whereas Shadow Games
is part of a continuous story that doesn't end for volumes. Who knows, it
might not be over yet! I envy you--you have some great reading ahead, no
matter which turn in the road you take. Beware of spoilers, and enjoy!

(Don - I must have been napping when your first message came in)
I've read "A Matter of Time" three times so far and have really enjoyed it
each time. It seems that Mr. Cook's habit of pursuing multiple timelines
concurrently (he does it so often - Shadowline and the first Dread Empire
book, the name of which I can't remember off the top of my head, both leap
to mind) was taken to a new extreme in this one, because I also found it
very disorienting. With that said, however, it seems to work every time he
does it, even though it can make the plotline(s) more difficult to follow
the first time through a book...
I agree completely with your amazement watching all of the plotlines come
together at the end of the book. I KNEW what was going to happen the first
time I read it and was so far off it's scary. (Although in retrospect I
can't quite remember what it was I thought was going to happen...) I also
missed all of the political references...
As a side note, it is because of this book that I was completely psyched to
learn that Cook's next book is going to be a mystery. Although the Garret
books are almost mysteries, A Matter of Time went all the way...

It's a good mystery, but I've only read it the once. I did manage to acquire a
spare copy of that. My mother, who is slowly becoming a Cook fan (hasn't read
fantasy or SF other than Lewis and Tolkein (there's an expedition for you !) in her
life) will get this one in short order.

I haven't read "A Matter of Time" in a long while, but it was
one of the first non-BC books of Cook's that I read. I loved how he
took all those separate threads and wove them together -- a masterful
job of plotting. That book solidified how much I liked Cook. I need
to go back and reread it.

'A Matter of Time' was the first Glen Cook novel that I ever read. I found
it very hard to start. I read a chapter or so, and then put it down for a
month or two. Then later on I picked it back up and really got into it.
Every time that I thought I knew where he was going, then he would throw me a
curve. A great novel.
After that, I was hooked. I picked up every one of his books that I could
find. And I found almost all of them. The others that I like very much, in
adition to the 'Black Company' stuff are 'The 'Dragon Never Sleeps' and
'Passage At Arms'. My biggest sarrow about Glen is that he doesn't write
enough Science Fiction! 'The Starfishers Trillogy' was also a very good read.

1. at the time this was written, Contague's daughter was just
that,'contague's daughter.' she didn't have a name; her only function was to
demonstrate chodo's (flawed) humanity for the shock of it (Garrett had no
idea chodo was capable of human feelings). she does appear in a later book
and becomes a recurring character in the series.
2. My impression was that she got away and disappeared.

Okay, finally getting around to reading these. I am one of those rare lucky
Cook fans who came upon him late in life (sort of), so I have all his books
(with two unnotable exceptions). Anyway, this will be my first trip through
these books, so far I can't wait for the POV character to get a little older.
I don't mind kids-growing-into-their-power books, I'm just sick of childish
viewpoints. I prefer adult situations dealt with by adults, but on the bright
side I trust Cook enough to know he'll pull it off.
It's a little disconceting to be reading about a basically bronze-age culture
that also seems to have some elements of space-flight, but that another
thing altogether. I'm on page 60 so far (of book one).

YES! Matthew you do indeed rock!
Gwen...... C'mon, in a perfect world and all that. This is the essence of
Cook. The essence of realisim. Sure she will have done alright. She just had
to learn, "when to wink and when to wag her tail at the right time." I'm not
sure which Garrett novel he wrote that in. But that's it in a nut shell.
(and that is how it will always be, But I admire your flying in the face of

I was just at Eric's site. Man I love the French covers of TBC. They blow
everything else away. Very Nice. The ship on the back I always saw as more
of a Spanish Galleon than a Viking ship, but it is forgivable. He got the
Sail right. My compliments to Didier. It looks like he actually read the

Dear TT,
do you see the difference between accidentally pressing the wrong key while
writting in your second language, and making mistakes thet dreadfully
resemble ignorance mistakes (check: realism) in your apparently native
language, judging from the last name.
Aha, there is a misspelled line in my last post, the on in capitalics.
Happens when I'm in hurry, but I can correct it: "THIS WOULD BE AN..."- it
should read.
I hope noone takes this pitiful mistake as a proof of feminine feeblenes of
consciousness or intelligence.

Aha, one more thing. where exactly do you see REALITY in a FANTASY novel?
THI WOULD BA AN oxymoron (this is not a curse). Might be you meant REALISM,
but whatever your point, a novel is alvays a recorf of somebodys
imagination, always influenced by her/his PERSONAL opinions. Why are you
looking for reality in a book?????
And, on the realism in Glen Cook's whiting- the Black Company is basically a
bunch of primitive scum- ok. And all of their commanding officers are
romantic, nice guys, with a big heart for children. -??????????

Gwen,
Oh boy...instead of assuming anything, I'll ask you. Was it dreadful
ignorance when you typed thet instead of that or was it an accidental
pressing of the wrong key? What about the word writting? Ignorance or
accidental? Either way, both words are spelled wrong.
As always, it is a VERY good idea to spell-check before one deigns to
correct anothers "mistake" in a public forum. Perhaps you might want to
slow down your typing rate, proof-read and spell-check before you press your
send button.
On a last note, Gwen, you should keep in mind that E-mail is the most
crippled form of communication there is. With no body language, visual or
audio cues, one has almost no idea of the intent behind the pixels on the
screen. I find it interesting that you assumed that the original spelling
mistake was due to ignorance. Perhaps that person also was hurrying in the
typing, and simply omitted a letter. Regardless, spell-checking would have
caught all of the mistakes high-lighted here. If anything, the ignorant
mistake is in not spell-checking a reply regarding a spelling error. Makes
one look rather foolish, regardless of the gender of the person.

I have to agree. While good spelling, grammar, etc. are all very nice, this
is the Internet and there are many people on this list who's first language
is not English. (Might not even be their second language.) Give it a rest.
I welcome our international subscribers and their opinions. And I appreciate
their willingness to engage the challenges in doing so.
This list will remain open to all regardless of their ability to read and
type English. Even Americans.
I think the original question was "What happened to Carla Lindo Ramada?"

Noted.
Sorry to everyone. I love to argue. Never meant to hurt.
And can't use the spell check on my computer, because it's in Polish, and
this I wrote in English. So when I spell check, I do this too quickly, too.
Well, I suppose I might try to slow down.

This is ridiculous.
So if somebody besides Gwen makes a mistake it's due to the
"dreadful ignorance" not because it's an "accidental pressing of a wrong
key" ???
Am I the only one who thinks there's something fundamentally wrong with
this logic ?

How would you explain the Polish cover of "Shadow Games"?

The French covers are incredible. Although I pictured the barge in "Shadow
Games" to be flatter and lower to the water. This picture reminds me more of
an ark. I should be getting my French copy of "Shadow Games in a couple
weeks. Can't wait to see what is on the back and spine.

Could be. Doesn't exactly fit my mind's-eye view of a woman hardened by
years of combat and hard living, but then I never saw the Black Company
decked out as conquistadors either.

Must be cheaper to recycle those old "Elric" covers.

Maybe, but Darling has blond hair :)
Unfortunately Polish covers often have no connections with subject of book.
I think that Rebis - the Polish publisher of BC books - has a lot of
pictures of Oliviero Berni (for example: see the Polish cover of "Bleak
Seasons" or "She Is The Darkness") and wants to do something with them
(money, money ...). These pictures are very similar to works of Boris
Valleyo - there is usually almost naked beauty and something/somebody
strange. It's a big pity that we don't have Didier's covers too. They are
beautiful!
The Polish "Shadow Games" cover has only one good property - it's nice
green ;)
Regards,
Kuba
PS Would somebody like to guess - what will be on the Polish "Soldiers
Live" cover?

Not going to mention anything to do with typos,
apologies or opinions, 'cause I don't want to be
unsubscribed! This is just a clarification request for
the group:
As far as I can tell from the little bio bits about
Glen, he has only recently retired from the line at a
truck assembly plant in Michigan. Is that, to the best
of everyone's knowledge, true? Also, and I can't
remember where I read this, I believe I read that Glen
did in fact spend some time in the military, though I
can't remember if he was one of the SF/F writers that
served in Vietnam. Again, anyone have any hard data
and references?
Thanks. Just curiosity and attempting to steer away
from the ferocious flamewars!

^^^^^^^^
He recently retired from the GM truck plant in St. Louis,
where he lives. Don't know about his wife.

Glen has three sons, the youngest is 20, no daughters. He is retired now,
and I don't know if his wife still works or not.

In addition to the little bio bits from the various novels and short stories
there are several articles in the biography section of the website that
refer to his time in the military.

Thanks, checked them out, got some answers, know a bit
more.
I find it rather sad that Glen wasn't able to make a
fair living writing, as he is such a fabulous writer
(as all of us here can attest to). I mean, the last
couple of Dread Empire Novels (The Fire in His Hands
and With Mercy Towards None--own them both) didn't
even sell out their print run. Is there something
wrong with Fantasy literature today? Short answer,
yes. The long answer I leave up to you all.

Okay, sorry about sending that last message to the list. It was intended for
Doug only (I have no idea if he's still on here).
So I finished book one.
If you're reading this and you haven't and you care that this is so, then you
should either stop reading. As far as spoilers go, I'm guessing none of the
below will even make sense unless you've read the books.
My impressions....
The good guys are just as bad as the bad guys. Okay, so there is this
grauken thing in every meth and a meth resembles a kragbeast, except
it (the meth) is intelligent. Now, when the grauken overtakes a meth
it becomes a cannibalistic killer. As far as I can tell this is all that
separates a meth from a grauken. The silth allow the grauken to over-
take a bunch of of meth killing most, then after almost all are dead,
the silth come in and kill the remaining meth/grauken under the ass-
umption that any remaing alive would have to be grauken? Oh yeah,
and the silth are more intelligent magical meth. Now throw into the
mix potential FTL travel (at least spacefaring), bi-planes, dirgibles,
flying log/broomsticks like in the last Black Company book, huge
political threads, conspiracies, and extreme underdogs and you have
a very atypical Cook book.
About the only thing I am used to is the narrow escapes and the
didn't make it in time to save anyone aspects of Cooks fiction.
I'm only half way into the second book, so am still on shakey ground.
About the only thing I haven't liked so far is that book one ended in
such a way as to demand a sequal. I don't mind trilogies, I just like
them to be independent stories in each. This reads like one novel split
in three, which is no big deal since I have all three books. A hard cover
omnibus would be cooler though.
