  5. You know, every time the Darkwar trilogy is mentioned on this list it seems
  6. that it is getting bashed as one of Glen Cook's weakest works, but I just
  7. finished reading it for the 2nd or 3rd time and I was reminded again how
  8. much I liked it, particularly the ending.
  9.  
  10. Does anyone else agree with me? I don't want to say exactly *why* I liked
  11. the ending for fear of spoilers, but I am interested in hearing what the
  12. group has to say.
  13.  
  14. (and now I'm starting my 2nd read of the Starfishers trilogy)

  188.     I wrote him a number of years ago about an out of print book 
  189. which I eventually did buy from him.  A few things to keep in mind
  190. if you write him:
  191.  
  192.     - He gets a lot of mail and can't really keep up with it.  So,
  193.     keep your letter reasonably short and don't be too surprised or
  194.     disappointed if he responds with a form letter.
  195.  
  196.     - Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope for his
  197.     reply so Glen doesn't have to pay for the stamp.  This will also
  198.     increase your chances of getting a response.
  199.  
  200.     - Include your address on the letter you send in case the envelope
  201.     is misplaced (that happened to me).
  202.  
  203.     - It might take a while for him to respond (assuming that he does)
  204.     due to his backlog of mail.
  205.  
  206.     Glen's a very nice guy and I think he does his best to keep up
  207. with his mail, but writing is his top priority.     Good luck.  :-)

  438. I liked Darkwar as well. I read them too spaced out to get the true feel,
  439. but I enjoyed them enough anyway. There was quite a transition between the
  440. first book and the last book. We start off in a primitive nomadic society
  441. and end up with a space race. Still, I do not feel it was as week as most of
  442. the list felt.

  555. We're in the process of getting all our papers through the court, so the tax
  556. office wont get our butts, so everything can change.

  558. It's in Lodz, mid- July, maybe with some support from the Kapitula. Were
  559. doing this with cooperation with the Elven Enthusiasts League, and the Wild
  560. Banthas- both theese clubs as small as ours. So the program is: lots of
  561. talking about TBC, lots of RPG (we provide professional GMs), a show by
  562. Fianna (these guys really like it tough, and use sharp swords), possibly a
  563. concert by Lutnia, an Elven food corner, and other on with military food
  564. (peas:) forever!!). Soon we will have an ad in the MiM magazine.

  656. The whole Darkwar trilogy is (primarily) about one character: Marika. It
  657. takes her from her humble beginnings as a "primitive savage" to the most
  658. powerful creature on her world. I really liked this progression, but the
  659. plot device that made me it enjoy it was the sense of premonition that
  660. surrounded her right from the beginning. There was always some character who
  661. feared and/or hated her for what she was or for what she seemed fated to
  662. become, but depending on the context Cook could make it seem like a real
  663. premonition (as in the author trying to tell the reader something) or simply
  664. a crackpot character who had her own agenda into which Marika didn't fit. As
  665. the trilogy plays out and we see just how horrible/powerful/destructive
  666. Marika actually is, culminating at the end of the third book where she
  667. realizes the worst fears of the most vocal of her critics.
  668.  
  669. Ok, the thing I liked so much about the Ending was that it was just that: an
  670. Ending with a capital E. At the end of the series Marika (the protagonist)
  671. is dead, along with every other Silth that her race has produced. The
  672. changes that she has wrought on her culture and her world are such that the
  673. Silth caste to which she belonged has been wiped out and is not only
  674. unlikely to reappear, but should it attempt to do so it would find the
  675. society of the world as a whole unable and unwilling to support it. In
  676. essence, the end of the series is not only the end of the main character,
  677. but is also the end of an age, the end of an era. 
  678.  
  679. Remember the end of The Return of the King, how Tolkien has established that
  680. this is the closing of the 3rd age of Middle Earth and that there is no
  681. longer any place for magic, elves, hobbits and the like. Or remember the end
  682. of the movie The Last Emperor, where the last emperor of China returns to
  683. the forbidden city only to find the places where he grew up changed into a
  684. communist museum? Both of these endings has the same feel (for me at least -
  685. I hate to draw any correlation between Cook and Tolkien, but in this context
  686. it seemed appropriate) of a way of life ending with such finality that there
  687. is no hope of regaining it.

  1382. excellent though.  You must have enjoyed the classes in school I hated.   I
  1383. enjoyed your reference to the demise of the protaganist and her society.   It
  1384. doesn't matter whether she was good or evil, the damage she did was extreme.
  1385. Noble or not, if you or your values do not survive at the end, was it worth it?

  1578. The ending was a surprise for me. The only disappointment I had was that it
  1579. seemed Marika always started something, but never saw it through to its
  1580. conclusion.
  1581. I really enjoyed the concept of the darkships, but it seems to me that in
  1582. the beginning the Mistress stood in the center, and toward the end she was
  1583. standing on the "blade" end. I could be mistaken, though.
