  25. Why?  Is profit a bad thing?  Who decides what the cost is, you or the
  26. creator of the product?

  31. Distribution cost is small.  Cost of development and maintenance of a
  32. product may be tremendous.

  41. Not really.  Commercial products gotta pay those who created the
  42. product.  But then, why am I trying to explain capitalism to a
  43. socialist?  Or, at least one who appears to be.
  44.
  45. Though, I do agree you have a point with music CDs.  Albums used to be
  46. under $10 15-20 years ago.  Production and distributions costs have gone
  47. down, but the prices have gone up.  However, people have a choice to buy
  48. them or not.

  61. Nope.  I've been using 2.04 ever since it came out.  I maybe get a crash
  62. once every two or three months.  It never locks up the OS.

  83. Classic FOTD -- November 16, 2000 (Rating 5)
  84.
  85. Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
  86.
  87. Fractals seem to become more interesting when they remind us of
  88. the familiar objects in the everyday world around us.  The
  89. grossly distorted bud in today's image reminds me of a rubber
  90. duck, so to make the picture more interesting, I named it
  91. "Rubber Duckie".
  92.
  93. The iterated formula that created the duckie is
  94. 0.1Z^(2)+10Z^(0.01)+(1/C), another whimsical expression that
  95. does more than would be suspected at first glance.
  96.
  97. There are midgets throughout the scene, but none of them are as
  98. interesting as the overall view.  I might dive down to retrieve
  99. one of these midgets in a future C-FOTD -- but more likely not.
  100.
  101. With a draw time of over 20 minutes, the image is a slow one
  102. when rendered from the parameter file.  The GIF image file
  103. downloads much faster from the Usenet group:
  104.
  105.           alt.binaries.pictures.fractals
  106.
  107. The image will soon be available also at the W.W.W. URL:
  108.
  109.           <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html>
  110.
  111. The fractal weather has become more wintry, with scudding
  112. clouds, a temperature of 44F (6C), and a brisk north wind.  All
  113. of this combined to keep the cats snug indoors.
  114.
  115. I'm once again sorry to disappoint the philosophy fans, but I
  116. could find no energy to philosophize today, and hardly enough
  117. energy to write the fractal notes.  I have no idea where all the
  118. inspiration went -- maybe I've said all I have to say.
  119. Philosophy or not however, I'll have a respectable fractal
  120. tomorrow, and hopefully more than a few words about it.  Until
  121. then, take care, and I've never seen a real fractal.  I've seen
  122. only pictures of fractals.

  244.
  245. Hi Everyone,
  246.
  247. I know everyone is anxiously awaiting Damien to complete the contest
  248. site, which is hopefully very soon.  I know everyone appreciates
  249. the effort Damien is putting in, and I'm sure he appreciates the
  250. patience everyone is exhibiting.
  251.
  252. Since many of you are planning to order the contest site on CDROM
  253. for easier viewing, Damien asked me to send out this message so that
  254. you might get a jump on that process.
  255.
  256. I will be handling the processing of the orders, so I wanted to get
  257. the ordering information out so that those interested could send in
  258. their orders in advance to speed up receipt of the CDROMs once the
  259. site is finished.  I'll will be accepting orders for those of you
  260. in the US, and also other parts of North and South America.  Other
  261. locations will be handled by another person.
  262.
  263. Tina Oloyede has gratiously volunteered to handle orders in Europe.
  264. The cost will be 7.50 Pounds Sterling or 12 Euros.  Please contact
  265. her at fa2kcds@aartika.freewire.co.uk for information on where to send
  266. payment and what form of payment she would prefer.
  267.
  268. I will also be accepting any international orders as well for those of
  269. you that it is more convenient that ordering from Tina.
  270.
  271. For those of you in the US, the cost is $7.00.  If the CD is to be
  272. shipped outside of the US, the cost is $10.00.  Payment may be made
  273. by check, money order, cashiers check in US funds only.  Cash will
  274. be accepted, but you send that at your own risk.
  275.
  276. Send orders to:

  282. You may also wish to send me an email indicating that the "check is

  285. Please do not post my address on any other lists.  I'll be making a
  286. separate annoucement on the news groups.
  287.
  288. I do not plan on cashing any checks until the CD is ready to be
  289. produced.  Just in case a hurricane wipes out Florida, or a civil war

  361. Subject: (fractint) Contest 2K CDROM Orders - Credit Card Update
  362.
  363. Hi Everyone,
  364.
  365. I know everyone is anxiously awaiting Damien to complete the contest
  366. site, which is hopefully very soon.  I know everyone appreciates
  367. the effort Damien is putting in, and I'm sure he appreciates the
  368. patience everyone is exhibiting.
  369.
  370. Since many of you are planning to order the contest site on CDROM
  371. for easier viewing, Damien asked me to send out this message so that
  372. you might get a jump on that process.
  373.
  374. I will be handling the processing of the orders, so I wanted to get
  375. the ordering information out so that those interested could send in
  376. their orders in advance to speed up receipt of the CDROMs once the
  377. site is finished.  I'll will be accepting orders for those of you
  378. in the US, and also other parts of North and South America.  Other
  379. locations will be handled by another person.
  380.
  381. Tina Oloyede has gratiously volunteered to handle orders in Europe.
  382. The cost will be 7.50 Pounds Sterling or 12 Euros.  Please contact
  383. her at fa2kcds@aartika.freewire.co.uk for information on where to send
  384. payment and what form of payment she would prefer.
  385.
  386. I will also be accepting any international orders as well for those of
  387. you that it is more convenient that ordering from Tina.
  388.
  389. For those of you in the US, the cost is $7.00.  If the CD is to be
  390. shipped outside of the US, the cost is $10.00.  Payment may be made
  391. by check, money order, cashiers check in US funds only.  Cash will
  392. be accepted, but you send that at your own risk.
  393.
  394. As was kindly pointed out by Doug Owens, I am also able to accept
  395. payment by credit card using PayPal.  If you are interested in this
  396. method, you must first set up an account at www.paypal.com.  Once you
  397. are registered, you may then send payment of $7.00 for US orders, or
  398. $10.00 for orders outside the US to icent@best.com.  I will then receive
  399. an email notifying me of the order.  Please include your mailing address
  400. and email address when you order this way.  Since this method of payment
  401. is virtually immediate, there is no need to pre-order unless you desire
  402. to do so.
  403.
  404. Send orders to:
  405.
  406. Ken Childress
  407. 2412 Mathews Ave., #5
  408. Redondo Beach, CA  90278
  409.
  410. You may also wish to send me an email indicating that the "check is
  411. in the mail".  :-)
  412.
  413. Please do not post my address on any other lists.  I'll be making a
  414. separate annoucement on the news groups.
  415.
  416. I do not plan on cashing any checks until the CD is ready to be
  417. produced.  Just in case a hurricane wipes out Florida, or a civil war
  418. breaks out over the election.  :-)
  419.
  420. If there are any questions, please contact me privately.

  451. Curious, I downloaded Chaos Pro 2. whatever. It crashed twice in the first

  475.
  476. Classic FOTD -- November 17, 2000 (Rating 6)
  477.
  478. Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
  479.
  480. When I create fractals that feature midgets, I always rotate the
  481. midget to the normal position, with the large period-2 bud and
  482. negative stem, (a classier term than negative tail), pointing to
  483. the left.  I do this for the same reason that I usually set the
  484. inside fill to 0 and the outside to equal iteration bands -- to
  485. establish a standard by which different fractals and their
  486. midgets can be reliably compared.
  487.
  488. In today's fractal the midget at the center is askew.  More
  489. accurately it is rotated about 20 degrees counter-clockwise.  I
  490. could easily have remedied the situation by rotating the entire
  491. frame, but for some reason I was pleased with the downward
  492. drooping nose of the midget, and left it as it was.  As a
  493. result, I have named the picture "All Askew", which might be a
  494. bit too strong to accurately describe today's picture.  When all
  495. the calculation was finished, I studied the image a few minutes
  496. before rating it a 6.
  497.
  498. The mathematical expression that was iterated to create the
  499. image is Z^1.05+Z^(-1.1)+(1/C), another of my endless whimsical
  500. inventions that make fractaling such an enjoyment.  The parent
  501. fractal is a wildly distorted Mandelbrot set, with an immense
  502. main bay that has barely visible buds around its perimeter.
  503. Today's midget lies on the shore of the M-set, about 9/10ths of
  504. the way from the tiny period-2 bud around to East Valley.  It is
  505. located in what normally would be an elephant trunk, though with
  506. such distortion, little signs of the East Valley elephants
  507. remain.
  508.
  509. The parameter file runs in 20-1/2 minutes on a Pentium 200mhz.
  510. This is slow enough to make impatient fractaliers run to the
  511. Usenet binary group:
  512.
  513.           alt.binaries.pictures.fractals
  514.
  515. or to the WWW URL:
  516.
  517.           <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html>
  518.
  519. The fractal weather, (is there any other kind?), today was hazy
  520. sun but chilly enough (47F [8C]) to keep the intrepid cats
  521. indoors.  Rain is due tonight, but no sign of it has yet
  522. appeared.
  523.
  524. And I'm about ready to disappear for the next 24 hours.  The
  525. philosophical muse is still dead, but a resurrection is possible
  526. at any time.  Until tomorrow, when I'll return with another
  527. wonderful (IMO) fractal, take care,

  658. My paper on logic-based probability (LBP) applied to quantum gravity and
  659. related fields has just been published in the volume Quantum Gravity,
  660. Generalized Theory of Gravitation, and Superstring Theory-Based Unification,
  661. Editors B. N. Kursunoglu, S. L. Mintz, and A. Perlmutter, Kluwer
  662. Academic/Plenum: New York 2000.  Here I would like to mention that LBP is
  663. applicable across many disciplines and is closely connected to a
  664. generalization/modification of maximum entropy theory, and I am currently
  665. studying its application to medical/biological virus studies related to
  666. fractals and chaos.   We are only touching the tip of the iceberg here, and
  667. things may well reverse or change later, but there is some indication that
  668. computer simulation and modeling of life and/or AI enters a "danger zone"
  669. when it gets near a life-form virus simulation (not a computer virus!) which
  670. is signaled by the fact that only chaotic or fractal iteration models work
  671. rather than linear or quadratic or generalized conic (including the kxy
  672. cross-product term with or without quadratic terms) or simple exponential
  673. models (like exp(-kx) or exp(kx)) useful for bacteria growth or radioactive
  674. decay, or homogeneous (partial) linear differential equation models or
  675. non-homogeneous (partial) linear differential equation models in which the
  676. right hand side (non-homogeneous) function has zero 3rd and higher order
  677. partial derivatives.   All of the latter types mentioned other than fractal
  678. and chaotic are excellent models for both life and many inorganic physical
  679. processes.   Many other models fall somewhere in between the two extremes,
  680. including integral equation models, but what signals the danger zone is the
  681. fact that iterative fractal/chaos models involve repeated (infinite)
  682. composition of the same (or theoretically different) function of the form
  683. f(f(f(....))), which mathematically is much more complicated than the models
  684. mentioned - in fact, much of general relativity and quantum theory falls
  685. into the simpler end of the scale even though the objects inside the
  686. equations remarkably complicated - it is the form of the equation such as a
  687. simple linear function even when tensors or operators are involved that
  688. makes for beneficial entropy or generalized entropy properties.  From the
  689. viewpoint of medical virus research for the purpose of curing viral
  690. diseases, it seems important that viruses would be on the opposite side of
  691. the scale from both life and many inorganic processes.  It is true that
  692. fractals give excellent models of continent boundaries, cloud shapes, and
  693. all kinds of irregular boundaries, but in some ways this ability to model
  694. high irregularity may differ from the recent suggestions of many theoretical
  695. physicists that the universe itself may be lifelike in its deep structure -
  696. if so, then the inorganic and life would have a fundamental unity and
  697. simplicity different from the very irregular complexity modeled by iterated
  698. fractals and chaos.
