I thought this would probably work (though I haven't tried it), but I
want to see it generating the fractal.

Are these referring to two different formulas, or did you change the name=

In chby15.frm, all of the alpha formulas have a wrong file number (-05
instead of -15).

I also get this same error trying to run Xfractint on
my Rh 5.2 system. This IS with X running. The error is:
"Error opening terminal: xterm."
I have also tried compiling the source but the compiler
aborts complaining about a missing file. The complaint is
when compiling general.c and the missing file is bstring.h
It appears that maybe the source code on http://spanky.triumf.ca
is missing a file.

Yeah. I 'reported' this earlier, but never got a reply. I haven't done any
debugging yet.
The execution of the binary [er... I ripped it from my old Slackware 3.4 cd]
works for me though.

Maybe a little off topic but give it a chance beforew you push the delete
key, OK?
A doctor, a civil engineer, and a computer scientist were arguing
about what was the oldest profession in the world. The doctor
remarked "Well, in the Bible it says that God created Eve from a rib
taken from Adam. This clearly required surgery so I can rightly
claim that mine is the oldest profession in the world."
The civil engineer interrupted and said "But even earlier in the
book of Genesis, it states that God created the order of the heavens
and the earth from out of the chaos. This was the first and
certainly the most spectacular application of civil engineering.
Therefore, fair doctor, you are wrong; mine is the oldest profession
in the world."
The computer scientist leaned back in his chair, smiled, and said
confidently, "Ah, but who do you think created the chaos?"

Hi Folks,
The Latest (and probably last for a while) version of my windows
front end for fractint is now available from it's own little web page at:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/robin.b2/pastengo.htm
So if you want the task of rendering the pars from this list made
easier why not pop over and look, tt's free and now features a
customisable set of command line parameters so you can easily
select, say, disk video rendering for slow background renders.
It's all free in the finest of fractint tradtion so why not give it a go.
Cheers,
Robin.

Subject: (fractint) Couple pars and comments
It scares me to think that fractint has become 'old hat' to the veterans but
us newbies need to carry the torch. So dazzled and psyched I was when I
joined the list and could actually commune with others who enjoyed math and
art...But alas I became what IRC people call leeches and idlers. I just
looked at image upon image taking but never contibuting anything new. The
process of creating a formula/image requires praise and criticism and someone
elses' perspective; if there is none of that then creativity grinds to a
halt. Are my images and formulas good enough? I ask myself constantly but
fear the worst and don't post.
I am posting some pars because they may not be highly polished or radically
different but they are a slivers of my personality.
If we want to have a fixed formula face off (if you think it'll get the
creative juices running) lets use a builtin, or pick a formula, or an
equation that you must use in your formula. What about for one week no one
does any escape time fractals and only do IFS or L-systems?
Ive ranted enough. Sorry if I insulted anyone.
Enjoy the pars....Tell me what you think...show me what I didn't see.
As always best regards
Rui

Here is the repost.

I never saw any such phrase inmy copy of BOF.
Anyways, the mini-Mset will generally appear whenever these conditions are
met:
1. The parameter z_0 is chosen where f' is zero.
2. At that location f'' is non-zero.
3. The set { z : |f'(z)| <= 1 } has a connected component containing
z_0 and containing no other critical points, and is bounded.
If condition 3 is violated a mini Mset appears but may be distorted
and fused to others in a weird way, or even stretched infinitely.
If condition 2 is violated, the Mset is not quadratic, and you see a
degree-n Mset (3 or above) when f', ..., f(n-1) are zero at z_0 and f(n) is
non-zero. If all derivatives are zero at z_0 you get an exponential-family
Mandelbrot. (Note that for e^z, all derivatives tend to zero at -inf, and
the forward image of -inf is 0, so we get an exponential Mset for e^z+c and
z_0 = 0.)
If condition 1 is violated you get a perturbed set that has some M-set
properties, mostly determined by the nature of the critical point closest
to z_0.

Of course... they're part of the same 4 dimensional Mandel-Julia object
that occurs in the z_0xc parameter space near points where:
* f'z(z,c) = 0 (differentiating with respect to z)
* f(z,c) = z
* f''z(z,c) != 0 (for quadratic M/Jul)
and preimages of such points.

If you find yourself pondering "is this good enough to post?" then it's
probably good enough to at least post. Someone else with a perspective
different from yours may like it better than yourself; and it may be taken
and turned it into something that surprises even you, and gives you new
ideas for avenues to explore. (I say this from experience.)

Maybe 'old hat', but there is still a wee tad of life in fractint. Mandel
0oh resulted in some additions to my "New_Dimension" file, generally
recoloring. Along with those I am adding a few others (From ND275 - ND285).
The color map for ND281 _may_ be one of Paul Carlson's maps; I'm not
certain. I had been putting the name of the color map into the par in
order to prevent any question as to just who made the color map but have
lately become a bit lazy. The other pars where the color maps are not named
are mine - dav94, 94a, 94b or otherwise, for instance the pars generated
from one of Jim Muth's formulas.
The formula file names in the pars are my own "system"; if this causes any
difficulty, email me privately and I will send the formula. This, however,
will doubtlessly be unneccesary. FWIW:
