The only problem with that is I don't follow the
Fractal-Art list. Not that I have anything worthy of
*entering* in such a contest ...

Maybe categories for program used and various color
depths - I know Fractint does 256 and
continuous-potential images (16-bit color?). Do the
non-Fractint prgs do less than 24-bit color? TrueMand, at
least, seems to be limited to 24-bit color.

Also, would it be possible to somehow add color-cycling
or other animations as a category?

Hi Fractint list,

On the Fractint homepage you can read about a Fractint contest which was run
by Jay Hill.  A contest formula was posted, entrants submitted three Fractint
pars based on the formula, and then readers of the Fractint list could vote
for their favorite(s).

It was an eye-opener for a beginner like me to see all the variations and
individual styles, even though the same formula was used by everyone.  This
format seems to make for a lower key contest than the Fractalus one and a real
opportunity for beginners to participate and share - and doesn't in any way
detract from a Fractalus 99 Contest.

I also have a question about Ultra-Fractal.  Is the current version that I
keep reading about the one for Windows95/98?  Does the older DOS version allow
for use of one's own formulas?

Thanks - I enjoy exploring Fractint and would love to participate in a fixed

Sounds like a fun idea to me!  I missed the last "best of formula"
contest.  I really don't have much spare time now (as evidenced
by my recent lack of input and/or output), but I think I could *make*
time to do a *little* competitive exploration :o) , and it wouldn't be
as taxing as a wide-open event.

The original contest, which I started from a comment on copyrighting
fractals (anyone remember that discussion?), was designed to see how varied
the entries could be using the same formula.

The major revision of my home page I have been working on for several
days is now complete. New images have now also been uploaded to my
Zf_Ang, Sylvie Gallet, and Lambdas pages. I hope you enjoy them. As
always, updated parameter files are available too.

In addition, a revised, expanded, and corrected version of the Chebyshev
formula collection is now available for download on both of my Chebyshev
pages. It contains all the old formulas. Each set, however, has been
augmented by the addition of six new series of formulas, and five
entirely new sets have also been added. Moreover, all of the formulas
have been made Ultrafractal compatible by the elimination of the 'e'
problem. Lots of new stuff for you Chebyshev fans out there to keep you
busy. Thanks goes to Morgan L. Owens, the author of these fine formulas!

Currently, only version 2 for Windows 95/98/NT is available. The older DOS
version is very limited and does not support user formulas, therefore it is
no longer supported.

Subject: (fractint) chebyshev zip file

To those of you who downloaded the expanded Chebyshev formula collection
since my announcement yesterday:

I regret to say that an error slipped into that collection, which was
not caught and corrected by the author Morgan L. Owens until this
morning. Since the error affects every one of the La-10-xx entries --
one in each of the 30 sets -- I cannot just post the bad formula here.
Unfortunately the whole of the file must be replaced to correct this
error. As far as we can tell, there are no other errors, but if you find
one, I would appreciate hearing about it

The newest bug corrected version is now on my page.

Subject: (fractint) an easy to fix bug in Chebyshev

Many entries in the chby30.frm file have the wrong suffix: 01 instead of
30. Although the posted zip file has already been corrected, you may
prefer to do the fix yourself rather than download another 280KBs. Open
chby30.frm in your text editor and do a search for '-01' -- without
quotation marks -- and replace with '-30' -- again without quotation
marks.

In ordser to run Xfractint under Linux, X windows has to be set up
and running. However, Xfractint has something like a disk video
mode and can run in text mode if you start it with the -disk option.

Getting X running on Linux is a bigger issue than I can address
here.

As has already been mentioned on this list, I've finally gotten around to
releasing a revised version of my Chbyshev.zip collection of formulae,
tweaking here, fixing bugs there, and adding some more formulae (2088, to
be exact).

The complete set is available from Gedeon Peteri's pages. In the meantime,
