Subject: RE: (fractint) Re: Root directory
>>> C:\fractint\maps <<<
Ray, in the example you've shown, C:\ is the root directory. Fractint is a
subdirectory (or folder) under your root directory of C:\
My sstools.ini file resides in my Fractint directory. My Fractint directory
has individual folders named Pars, Maps, Frms, etcetera.
My sstools.ini file has a line that reads map=C:\fractint\maps
However, my individual color maps all reside as files in the maps
subdirectory under fractint.
So, if I wanted to try out the colors in my data.map, the command line
sequence would look something like C:\fractint\maps\data.map.
The sstools.ini file would direct your program to look in your maps
subdirectory to find the color.map itself. (in this case, data.map)
It'd look in C:\ as your root directory for a folder or directory called
Fractint. Then, it'd look under fractint to find the maps folder, and then
look in maps to find your individual color or .map file.
I'm not sure if this is what you wanted to know. If your question applies to
something entirely different, I'm sure one of us will be able to help you
here.
Marie :)

Subject: (fractint) Re: Root directory
On the track of my sstools.ini file again.
What is a 'root directory' - or where is it - or how do I make one?
I still get a "Could not load color map C:\fractint\maps " Always! Each
time I enter Fractint.
Is there a solution? Must be, somewhere.
Would appreciate any help in that area.
Thanks Ray

Subject: (fractint) call for help
I've been trying to write a formula to investigate basins of attraction,
but i can't seem to get it to work right; basically, I want to color
pixels based on where the orbit of the pixel ends up. I feel like this
shouldn't be too hard to do (it's done in the fractal newtbasin), but I
can't figure out quite how.
Anyone have suggestions?
thanks

One way to do this is to assign to z the last iterate in the orbit, and
then use "decomp=256" coloring. This will assign different colors based
on the angle of z, so if the final points have different angles, you
should be set.

Garbled screen...Invoke fractint in one of the following ways :
fractint textsafe=yes
fractint textsafe=bios
fractint textsafe=save
One of these should let you switch back and
forth to text mode without screen corruption.
Then you can set it permanently in sstools.ini

Are you trying to run it under Windows 95? On our Diamond
Stealth 64 Series 2000, none of the textsave options
prevent that corruption (in our case, W95 hangs).
According to someone on the list, the problem is the
display adaptor and/or driver, IOW, nothing to do about
it. Fractint and W95 fight over the adaptor and hang the
machine.
Yet Fractint (with textsave=yes) works fine under OS/2 on
the same hardware.

Yes. I am lazy and guilty as charged. I don't like to take the extra step of
bailing out of windows to a dos window. Would that work, or do I need to shut

Very nice!!! Thank you. I am mystified though- how does one get the words
Merry Christmas in the par file?

Hi one and all,
The November .par collection, culled from these pages, is now available at:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Les_StClair/
(Pars + index + IFS, current formula collection available separately)
Or:
http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/crosstrees/fractasi.htm
(Pars with text of original postings, index, IFS and current formula file in one
handy .zip)
This month there are just over 200 new images to enjoy!
cheers, Les

Subject: (fractint) Fractal Christmas Tree par
Hi,
It's about this time of year that folks start lighting up their Christmas Trees.
So here's a Fractal version, complete with coloured lights!
For anyone unfamiliar with Fractint IFS files just save this whole message as a
text file and call it "xmastree.par", then run the par in the normal way (p.s.
this assumes that you're using v19.6, otherwise you need to cut the IFS file,
remove the "IFS:" prefix and save it as a separate .ifs file)

comment {
The pars fbnewt2m1 - m4 are are zooms into a baby 'Brot sitting
in a portion of a 4th-order Newton (a different equation than
the one I posted yesterday). The par fbnewt2m5 is a very
pretty (IMHO) cascade from the "rear end" of the baby 'Brot.
I would appreciate some nice colormaps for these types of
images.

Being right on top of everything, I _finally_ got around to looking at some
of Jim Weaver's pars (s_gofdn01 etc): Very striking, very good!
And being even more on top of everything, Phil DiGirgi's "Flakes" (
Excellent!!), and even more so, HC_Star01 and the rest of that series.
Those are superb!!
Just thought I would drop a note re: the above.

Back up my hard drive?
How do I put it in reverse?

Hi, Everyone--
Here's a zoom/recolor of Paul Carlson's Flex_Newt1_Mand formula that he
posted earlier. A somewhat different effect - Hope you like it--
Hey, Jo Weber, HOW did you do that with those Christmas cards? I love
it! I always thought you'd have to post-process a Fractint image to
overlay text.. Wow!
To Jim Weaver - Very nice images - Never suspected how much gold could
be mined from that manlam fn:fn formula..
Here's the par:
