Subject: (fractint) 15 pars (various)
Hello everyone,
Here are a few images I came up with during the last couple of days. The
first one is just of zoom of *Kirlian Fractal* with a different colormap and a
slight change in screen aspect. The others are recent, some of which are
quite strange yet nice to look at. :)
Enjoy~
Jim

I just received this letter from a budding fractalist who is
looking for a fractal program to run on his mac. I know that
several programs exist but can't remember their names or where
to get them. He would appreciate it if someone from the list
wrote to him, telling him where to find a fractal program for
his Macintosh. His address is <jswalker@ou.edu>

But what is the purpose in savetime =3D -1? I seem to remember a few
months ago somebody talking about that, but it seemed like a trick of
some kind. I assume that once the image is saved, then it will stop
processing, or is this parameter a way to bypass that possibility?
btw, I used the fractal screensaver to generate the long processing
fractals. At night I just put the par in a file called long.par, and set
the screensaver to 1 image, with that par file. When I wake up in the
morning, the gif is in my fractal folder called scrsave1.

"SAVETIME=nnn|-nnn" is useful with long batch calculations, to store a
checkpoint every nnn minutes. If you start a many hour calculation with
say "savetime=30", and a power failure occurs during the calculation,
you'll have lost at most a halfhour of work on the image. You can
resume calculation from the save file as above. Automatic saves
triggered by SAVETIME do not increment the save file name. The same
file is overwritten by each auto save until the image completes. But
note that Fractint does not directly over-write save files. Instead,
each save operation writes a temporary file FRACTINT.TMP, then deletes
the prior save file, then renames FRACTINT.TMP to be the new save file.
This protects against power failures which occur during a save operation
- -- if such a power failure occurs, the prior save file is intact and
there's a harmless incomplete FRACTINT.TMP on your disk.
If you want to spread a many-hour image over multiple bits of free
machine time you could use a command like:
fractint batch=yes filename=xxx savename=xxx savetime=60 video=F3
While this batch is running, hit <S> (almost any key actually) to tell
fractint to save what it has done so far and give your machine back. A
status code of 2 is returned by fractint to the batch file. Kick off
the batch again when you have another time slice for it.
By using a negative value for the SAVETIME= parameter, it is possible to
have the batch process stop after the specified number of mintues and
proceed on to the next PAR image when doing a set of images. If you use
"savetime=-10", then only the first ten minutes of each PAR image will
be calculated before proceeding onto the next image. To continue
calculation for a set time on all the images that you saved after ten
minutes, for %g in (xxx*.gif) do:
fractint %g savename=%g overwrite=yes savetime=-10 batch=yes
replacing xxx* with whatever you want. The only drawback is this loads
and re-saves even the completed images, but it doesn't spend ten minutes
over it.
While running a batch file, pressing any key will cause Fractint to exit
with an errorlevel = 2. Any error that interrupts an image save to disk
will cause an exit with errorlevel = 2. Any error that prevents an
image from being generated will cause an exit with errorlevel = 1.
The SAVETIME= parameter, and batch resumes of partial calculations, only
work with fractal types which can be resumed. See "Interrupting and
Resuming" on page 24 of the Fractint Documentation for information about
non-resumable types.

Of course this does nothing to help with the infamous AP hang bug... I had
one image nearly done, but it triggered the arbitrary precision hang. It
will trigger it again and again, consistently, every time it reaches a
particular pixel in the image. I wish Fractint 20 would hurry up and arrive
with the AP more stable!
(For those not familiar with this: 19.6 contains a bug where certain
high-precision images will consistently hang Fractint at a certain pixel,
requiring the DOS box be forcibly terminated with the Vulcan neck pinch.
The hang happens whether or not the image is run in regular or disk-vide,
so it isn't a video driver related hang. And it happens whether the image
is run fresh or from an image so it isn't a gif encoding bug (besides, a
gif encoding bug would manifest immediately on restoring a file). Since it
only affects deepzooms it seems likely the bug is with arbitrary precision.
And to confirm whether it is a real hang or just very slow deep zoom
calculation, I have verified that Fractint completely stops responding (in
a slow calculation that is proceeding normally, it responds to tab and the
like no matter how slow the calculation. Even if the line is literally
crawling visibly across the screen, or you can see the individual pixels
going one by one...) and does not resume after several hours or even a day
(in case it entered a tight inner loop with no input checks for a sizable
period of time, seconds, minutes, or even hours).

This long message did not contain sufficient information to help the
developers locate the bug. Please email the authors if you have bug
reports, and give sufficient information for the bug to be duplicated.

Subject: (fractint) Anyone interested?
Hi everybody,
In the past week or so I've receved two unusual offers regarding
fractals that I'm not qualified to accept, but I thought I'd pass
them along in case any of the fractal math wizards (like Sylvie or
Kerry) might be interested.
The first is an offer to be a visiting lecturer to China. The second
is a request from a doctoral candidate at the University of Cambridge
to review his doctorate thesis. I downloaded the thesis (a 4.5 MB
Postscript file) which is 100 pages of solid mathematics, the only part
of which I could understand was the title (and I'm not too sure
about that).
Anyhow, I answered both, saying that my math background only went as
far as calculus, and that my understanding of complex dynamical systems
is largely intuitive and that although in many cases I can visualize
what's going on, I can't come close to understanding the mathematical
expressions involved.
Here are the two messages I received, in case anyone is interested.

Dear Paul W. Carlson:
I am Ms.Chen Ning the author of the paper "Bud-sequence
conjecture on M fractal image and M-J conjecture between
C and Z planes from z<-z^w+c(w=a+ib)" on COMPUTERS &
GRAPHICS (1998,22(4)). I am interested in your paper
"PSEUDO-3-D RENDERING METHODS FOR FRACTALS IN THE COMPLEX
PLANE" in COMPUTERS & GRAPHICS(1996,20(5)).
Recently, the head of our institute told me that I can
invite a scholar who will like to give lectures on images
of complex dynamical systems, corresponding algorithms, and
so on to our institute. The institute will make arrangements
for board and lodging that means the scholar only should pay
his or her airplane tickets from his or her country to Beijing
of China and from Beijing to his country. The visiting period
will be from one month to one half year. The visiting will be in
between 1999-2000.
If you are interested in this, please tell me as soon as possible
because we are making the plan.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely
Chen Ning

Dear Paul Carlson,
I've been following your wonderful Webpage collection of fractals. I've
recently generated the fractals of the maps of the Riemann zeta function.
The Webpage showing the fractal diagrams is at:
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/scw21/riemann/
I've written down a few of the findings in Chapter 4:
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/scw21/thesis/thesis.ps
I would like to seek your opinion on how significant these findings are
and what their implications are. I would be grateful for and appreciative
of your comments and suggestions.
Another particularly interesting numerical observation is the self-similar
pattern in Goldbach conjecture (the famous unsolved problem in Number
Theory) due to combinatory distribution of prime numbers.
It is shown in Figure 4.10, 4.11 and 4.12 of Chapter 4 of the thesis.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Thank you.

It doesn't seem to me that you need to be a math wizard to give
these classes, Paul. I can't tell for sure, of course, but I'd
say some basic explanation of Mandelbrot sets and some coloring
algorithms might do (of course with the help of many images).
And it seems pretty cool to go to China (although they could
have offered to pay the plane ticket). :)
Best regards,

Friends,
I have updated the orgform formula compilation and posted it in the
CompuServe Graphic Developers Forum (LIB3). This is the first update in
about 10 months, and is overdue. I will also send it to Noel Giffin for
inclusion at his Fractal site - it may be a week or so before it is
available there. Jo Weber advises that he has already posted it at his WE=
B
page (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JoWeber).
The new compilation has 12400 formulas. The zip file is about 570k. It
includes (I think) all of the formulas posted in this message list (with
help from Les StClair), the Fractal Art list, the CompuServe forum, and
from many author WEB pages, in addition to those which have never been
posted publicly but have been sent to me directly by the authors. I
encourage formula authors to take a look at their formulas in the
compilation and make sure they are satisfied with the content. Also,
authors of formulas which are not in the compilation may send them to me,=
and I'll be happy to include them in the next update. =
Enjoy,
George Martin
