In my search for such a system here in Denmark, I foud a similar system,
"Digital Station" at the chain Japan Foto. The "station" is designed to
reproduce all kinds of digital images and reads floppy-, CDR-, zip- and
Jazz-discs, and digital cameras can be linked directly to it. You bring your
files and then the station guides you through the relevant choices before
sending your file to the lab. A few day later you pick up your image at the
store. Easy and painless.
Technically, the printing resolution is max 300 dpi, but 200 dpi is
recommended. It can handle prints up to apx. 8"x12" and reads all common
file-formats.
The cost? 6"x8" $3.20 (20 dkr) 8"x12" $4.78 (30 dkr).
>Try it - you'll be impressed.
The few prints I've just made are very nice indeed, but I'm not so impressed
that I'll skip the color laser printer in favor of this printing method.
While the colors are as vivid as on the monitor, the edges seems a bit
fussy, especially in lighter areas. For example, I did a strict yellow-blue
picture and reds seems to blend in on the edges. Still, I'll proberbly do a
few more soon, to explore the potential more in depth.
Kind regards, Kim :-)

I should have mentioned that it uses one of Linda Allison's color maps (from

I don't know if this helps, but many of the built-in types are available as

They were prepared by Chuck Ebbert and appear in two collections: "builtin.frm"

This is an update on the weird slowdown I'm experiencing :
I tried fiddling with the System applet , changing the=20

to no avail.
If I shutdown NT and boot in DOS mode, the slowdown=20
goes away. So, it=B4s definitely a NT problem (not CPU=20
or video card related).
Under NT, it slows down also under disk-video mode
(even more noticeable).
Invoking fractint with debug=3D10000 as Tim suggested,

Hi,
This may be really a dumb question but....is your machine running power
conservation, or a screen saver?
I' ve had similar boggs in other applications due to "power managment"
programs
being enabled.

I would very much recommend the "Bifurcation" types of Fractint, which look
at several variants of the logistic equation x<-rx(1-x). The Fractint docs
for the type give more information, but basically the diagrams illustrate
the long-term behaviour of the above equation for various values of r
(along the horizontal axis). The period-doubling cascade (a classic
hallmark of chaotic processes) and the onset of chaos itself is brutally
obvious.
But of course none of this is to say that other Fractint types are useless!

A 386?! No bloody wonder. It isn't recommended to run NT on anything less
than a Pentium.

Before you go spouting off, you might want to think a little. I just ran
the same test on my 200MHz Pentium system (Intel processor) and got this:
CPU type: 386 FPU type: 387 IIT FPU: 0 Video: 5 Video chip: 14 (vesa)
1842 NEAR bytes free
123616 FAR bytes free
8642 STACK bytes free
12680 used by HISTORY structure
21600 video table used
Hmmm, it would seem that FractInt stops checking at the 386 level.

It doesn't matter if you have a 386 or a Pentium II: it only indicates it's a
32bit x86 processor.

Real computer scientists despise the idea of actual hardware. Hardware has
limitations, software doesn't. It's a real shame that Turing machines are so
poor at I/O.

Fractint 19.6 detects every 386 or above CPU as a "386". The
developer 19.6+ version detects Pentiums and makes use of
Pentium optimizations.

It is? that's bloody strange. Maybe the software that generated that report
is scrooowed up... or maybe your cpu is...hope not...

Subject: (fractint) Three pars
Hi, Everyone--
The first par is from Bill Decker's "bills_dif_delt1" formula -
generates fairly quickly and I like it, so here it is. I been having
lots of fun with Bill's formulas, lately..
The second and third ones are straight M-set zooms with my first
colormap attempt that I thought worth actually using - Haven't done much
with Fractint colormap writing to date.. The first zoom takes about 4
minutes with a P60 & the second takes maybe 12 minutes.
These will probably appear on the next update to my Fractint site -
Enjoy!
Regards, Paul

I like them, too! Wonder how many of us glued together countless
plastic models in our younger days? It's been years - decades??!! -
since I've done it. "Growing up" can have it's down side <G>.
