Passes=1?!?!?! That's usually the rendering mode of last resort, if you get
errors or holes with every other mode including passes=t.
Next someone will be saying that he ought to use periodicity=0 too.........

Hi Kristen
I was referring to those many formulas which are "embedded" in fractint.exe code and therefore not readable as such in a
text editor. They have to be de-assembled first... How to do it??
Thanks

Thanks Paul,
I've seen passes, periodicity, etc, but I had not come across an
explanation of what it was and when to use it. I did see an explanation
it went over my head. Terms like yours below, I understand. I'd be
interested if you happen to have interpretations of any of the other
fractint settings. I can already think of a par I was playing with that
I liked but it had 1 or 2 holes in it and I was to embarrassed to ask
how to fix it. I'll give Passes=1 a try!

Subject: (fractint) Par files size?
OK then, how about this question?
How big, how long, how many pars can a par-file hold? I seem to remember
reading somewhere that it is about 200. If I have four files with approx.
200 in each, does that sound about right? Or am I, laughably, far off
base, as usual?
The quantity of pars is beginning to mount up.
Would appreciate knowing the answer to this question - before I crash
something or worry about something that is really nothing.
Thanks Ray

Subject: (fractint) Fractal Applet
I have recently put a fractal mandala generator on my web page,
www.von.com.au/qlt
it is fairly simple compared to the all-powerful Factint (but what isn't).
It can only generate basic M-Set images so far (and 4-pole mandalas generated
from the M-Set).
When I get some free time (not much of that available at the moment), I shall
add more fractal types to it.
You can generate printer resolution images with the and save them to disk, but
you have to be running in IE with security restrictions turned off to do this. I
am trying to find out how to do this for Netscape (my preferred browser), so if
there are any Java programmers out there who have any ideas - please let me
know.

uh, that's why they told you to do it. Do you have a better idea? has

You have to download the source code, and its very easy to find. The
fractint homepage at spanky.triumf.edu has it. I don't remember the exact url.

Hit X change "Sound" to "No".
For a permanent fix put sound=no in your sstools.ini.
As to the sound becoming almost inaudible: Do you have any other
programs that use PC speaker? Maybe it's gone bad.

Perhaps the pc speaker gone bad. Try running this program:
http://www2.arnes.si/~alajov/fractals/speaker.exe
It is a little "symphony" made for pc speaker. If you can't hear it,
then something is probably "hardwarely" wrong with your pc speaker.
Hope your "Chirp!" will be back soon :)

Subject: (fractint) Large images
I tried the multi-part image option on the Fractint b-screen as described
in the fractint manual and at Linda Allison's page
(http://www.geocities.com/Paris/5519/mirror.html), but I ran into two
problems -- the first was easy to overcome, but the last one has me
stopped.
First problem was a "frmig_00.gif not found" message during the execution
of the makemig.bat file. Seems that Fractint was putting the images (per
instruction in my sstools.ini) into my ....\fractint\images\ directory. The
fractint makemig instruction in the makemig.bat file seemed to expect the
gifs in the ....\fractint\ directory. Easy to solve with a copy command. I
followed that with a fractint makemig=2/2 command at the DOS prompt and lo
and behold I have a fractmig.gif file
Next problem, none of the graphics programs I have (including two viewers
and PaintShop Pro 5) will decode the entire gif. Each one shows only the
left-upper quadrant (of the 2x2 composite) of the combined image. The
fractmig.gif is 4-times the size of the component frmig_nn.gif files, so
I'm assuming the image is all there but the viewers are fooled into
thinking that the file is only 1024 x 768 rather than 4096 x whatever.
Well, perhaps that simplgif command is there in the makemig.bat file for a
reason? The reason is not spelled out in the manual, but the hint is that
you might have to use it. The manual warns that this program needs 4GB for
a 64k x 64k image but mine is only 4k x whatever. Well, I was warned. It
wants 933MB for my fractmig.gif and it can't be stopped until it runs out
of disk space. (It would have been nice if it had asked if I had that
much. It would have been nicer if it had looked for itself! Like I have 1GB
of hard-disk space for spare when some program wants it. Right!)
So, I have a nice gif that looks big enough to be what I was trying to
produce, but no way to look at it or process it to the next step.
Help.

It took me a lot of playing around to get the bat files modified to find
the files correctly. You can either copy/move the files as you did, or
edit the bat file to point it to the proper location.

I used simplgif to combine the pieces and didn't run into any problems.
I was using 800x1000 pieces to create a 3200x4000 pixel image that I
resized down to 1600x2000 for printing.

I guess the Vivid kit is still available somewhere in the web, but if

OK. I seem to have worked around the problem.
I followed the same procedure as before, but this time I used the
simplg.exe that comes in the simplgif.zip rather than the simplgif.exe. The
pre-execution notice said that a 3+MB file would be created and everything
worked just fine.
If the consequences were a bit less scary, I'd try to confirm that the
933+MB was the result of using simplgif rather than simplg by running
simplgif again.
(Maybe you've heard the story about the manager, the engineer, and the
software developer. They were in a car and the brakes fail on a mountain
road. The tumble off the road into a ditch with a tremendous crash. They
all crawl out and look at the car. "There should be a procedure to prevent
this from happening again", says the manager. "We should look at the brake
lines to see what broke" says the engineer. "Maybe if we take it back to
the top of the hill and try to come down again it will work this time" says
the software developer.)
The story is so true to life that it's scary. Perhaps my copy of simplgif
is corrupted, perhaps it is the result of operator error. However, waiting
helplessly for a program to terminate from a "disk full" condition is not
an experience I want twice in one day.
So, I'll just chalk it up to experience and keep good notes on what works
for me.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Subject: (fractint) Web site update
Hi All,
I just updated my web site:
- added 2 new galleries (5 and 6, 18 images)
- added 3 truecolor images (Gallery 3)
- uploaded a new FOTW and updated Gallery 4
All images, including images created with Fractint, are JPGs 640x480 (o=
r
800x600 for the FOTW).
The site is getting complex, 4 galleries are at Compuserve, the other
ones are at AOL, and I hope everything will work fine. The main page
remains at Compuserve:
in English:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Sylvie_Gallet/homepage.htm
in French:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Sylvie_Gallet/homepagf.htm
Any comments are welcome!
Cheers,
- Sylvie

Sylvie,
The images in your galleries are stunningly beautiful! Set of favorites too
large to name.

Wow, I love the Fractal of the Week- I've
been trying to color a simple wave lately and that one
has all the power of the ocean, you can practically
see a surfer or some dolphins under it.

Hi All,
Thanks Kathy and Gedeon for your kind words!
I've fixed a problem with Gallery 4 (a row of 3 thumbnails was missing)=
,
and moved the .zip files back to Compuserve.
Cheers,

Subject: (fractint) New-comer seeking advice
Hello All
My name is Judas Dorraine, I'm a student in my second year studying a
degree in physics. We have just been introduced to fractals, and I
bumped into fractint. My mathematical knowledge is limited and I have a
small but rather urgent problem.
A small group of students, including myself, are required to make a
short presentation (about 12mins) on:
"Dicuss how numerical algorithms can give rise to fractal strustures and
chaotic behaviour."
We're looking at the simple Mandelbrot algorithm, and the Julia sets,
but could anyone suggest another algorithm, preferably a very simple one
that is covered by the fractint program, that we could also present?
I'd be very grateful to anyone who could make such a suggestion without
confusing the hell out of me.
Thanks very much.
- JD.
PS: The presentation must be made at 9am (UK time) on Friday. Oh joy.

Subject: (fractint) Gray plastic fractals
I was going through the output of Ken Childress? parparser with the int=
ent
of selecting the ?cream of the crop? pars created from a specific formu=
la
when I unearthed a series of pars created over several periods that use=
a
monochromatic map file.
There are several map files in the Fractint starter set that are smooth=
,
linear gradations (or gamma-modified gradations) from a single color to=
black. (gamma1.map, gamma2.map, lyapunov.map, grey.map, green.map are
examples) These monochromatic maps can appear to be dull or blah when u=
sed
with many types of fractals but I noticed that several of the formulas =
I
use regularly produce interesting, rounded shapes with these maps.
I eventually mapped a gradation from white to black (reversing gamma1.m=
ap)
and named it gamma3.map after I discovered that it gave convex, carved
surfaces in many cases.
There is really nothing spectacular about these images; they?re sort of=
like comfort food, wholesome and pleasing. I like them, though, because=
they remind me of the molded plastic sheets I used to pull out of the b=
oxes
containing the makings of plastic model cars, planes, or battleships.
As I said, I was gathering pars from one formula (in this case
bills_xy-trade4) when I rediscovered this group. I played around this
weekend and discovered that bills_xy-trade6 does about the same thing
except that bright lines snake through some of the convex mounds.
Hope you enjoy these. Maybe someone else can give some examples of thei=
r
experiences using monochromatic maps.
(Some of the images might appear to be oddly placed on the screen. Thes=
e
are candidates for backgrounds for PowerPoint presentations, so the
interesting areas of the images are placed in corners or down the side =
as
borders. Some have been used in my presentations at work. I?ve learned =
to
be careful though, the audience can get distracted by the unusual forms=
to
the detriment of the message. Still, it gets people to ask what they ar=
e
and gives me a chance to describe my hobby. I?m always ready to talk ab=
out
fractals. Much more interesting than CMM, ISO 9000, software measuremen=
t,
or process improvement.)
