I hope you don't. There are a bunch of providers that are less than
$10 per month, and they don't arbitrarily pull your pages if they think
your fractal looks like a vagina, and they don't put ads on your
pages. Some that look pretty good are www.he.net, www.caryon.com,
www.astraweb.com, www.dragondata.com, www.pixelgate.net, www.pair.com,
www.webcom.com, www.digitrends.com, www.twisted.pair.com, www.clearlight.com,
www.serve.com, and www.dreamhost.com. There are probably another 100
providers out there that have similar prices, similar bandwidth, and
similar unrestrictions.
Also, most of them will host virtual domains --- which means that you
can switch to another provider without changing your URL. You can get
an xyz.ml.org address for free, an address in .to, .nu, or .tj without
too much money, or an address in .com or .org for $35 a year, plus the
risk of having your domain arbitrarily yanked if you haven't registered
a trademark on it.

Another excellent example of hidden redundancies. This is more
plausible than my encryption argument: a fractal image is simply a
larger, more convenient representation of the information in the .par
and .frm file, plus a little bit of the information in Fractint.

Tim, can you repost the request to take non-fractint related messages into
private email? I haven't noticed any change or willingness on the parts of
some to do this. I'm getting overwhelmed with junk messages that are of
interest only to the involved few. Thanks,

A useful resource for finding free web site hosting is www.freewebspace.net This isn't a
host itself; it's a list of others.
I won't put a list up here; www.freespace.net lists many, many hosts.

David here. I'm contemplating moving my part of our
family web (particularly the fractal part) to one of the
free web sites. I know a number of Fractint list folk
use such providers.
What ones are out there?
If you use one, what do you think of it?

This happens when the program fails in an attempt to allocate memory for
some purpose; when data is to be written to the allocated memory, it is
instead written to the NULL (i.e. 0) address. Usually nothing bad happens=
;
occasionally it can crash the program.
This is a serious bug (when a memory allocation fails, the program should=
be designed to recognize it and not write data to the nonexistent memory)=

This comes up occasionally during the development process of a release, a=

the identification and elimination of the cause is always a top priority.=
I suggest we take this discussion off the message list for now. Please
write me directly (my email address is on the opening credits screen) so

I don't post much to the Fractint list; I do most of my posting to the
Fractal-Art list. But I read the Fractint list every day. These past few
days I've received over a hundred off-topic messages. Posting to Usenet as
I do, I get enough real spam as it is. But the stuff I've been reading here
lately isn't even as interesting as the real XXX-rated spam.
I did not subscribe to the Fractint list to read about the merits of various
computer platforms, or to learn how to design a good web page, or to learn
how file compression is accomplished. There are better places to learn
these things. I joined the Fractint list to learn how to create better
fractals.
Before we click that "send" button, we should ask ourselves, "what does this
message have to do with fractals or Fractint?" If the answer is "nothing"
then let's send it privately.

Well, it has taken me more than just a couple of days to screw up the
courage to post these pars. They were "discovered" while trying to learn
something in Winfract 18.21. Some were refined in Fractint, after I began
to understand(?) some. I hope you like them as much as I do. I know I have
enjoyed those sent over the last 3-4 weeks.

I really love the "earth tones" (greens, browns, etc..), that's probably
why I create so many with these colors myself. :-)
BTW, some nice images in the SG_FOTW.par, but those three that take a
long time (96 hours ??) will have to wait.

I agree with Steffen. This has happened before, but now I don't intend to
waste any more of my time. I unsubscribe. If there is anything I want to
announce on this list I will subscribe temporarely just for the occasion.

Real computer scientists despise the idea of actual hardware. Hardware has limitations,
software doesnt. It's a real shame that Turing machines are so poor at I/O.

Crosswinds provides infinite space for free and doesn't give you popup ads
like Geocities or Tripod. Plus the owner has a page on the site where
Crosswinds members can send in pictures of their cats. (Or at least he wil
one of these days, or so he promsies.) Therefore, by definition, it's good.

So does that mean if we calculate the position of every recipient of
this mailing list and then color them according to the number of
messages it takes to send them into orbit, we would have a an escape
time fractal of the fractint mailing list? ;-)
That does bring up a question for this list that IS on topic. With
fractint we generate fractals that are projected on to a 2-D plane. Does
the appearance of a fractal changed if it is projected onto a sphere? I
don't mean just warping a 2-D image into a sphere, but actually using
spherical coordinates to calculate the orbits, and THEN projecting the
3-D image back onto a 2-D plane. Or is it really the same thing? Sorry
if this question is redundant, but I'm trying to lay the groundwork for
understanding multi-dimensional fractals.

Fractals,
dependent as they are
on complex numbers,
exist primarily
in two or four dimensions.
Three spatial dimensions
are almost useless
for anything
except reality.

There are no bounds on the compression of nonrandom data -- suppose you
have a 1 meg file with every single one of the 2^20 bytes equal to the
letter 'a'. You can shrink this down to 2 bytes, obviously. (First byte ==
0x100000 (2^10), second byte == 'a'.)

I don't think so... I think there was somekind of copyright dispute
involving PK's algorithm, although I may be wrong...
