Thanks for the alert and the mods. After I posted the files, it had

No, but he seems to have a lot of mentions at the Harvard website.
http://www.math.harvard.edu/~ctm/
http://www.math.harvard.edu/~ctm/papers.html has a list of his papers.
"The Mandelbrot set is universal" sounds like the answer, but it's in
formats I can't read (gunzipped postscript and dvi).

It appears that www.math.harvard.edu is a Solaris machine with the TCP
bug that makes it nearly impossible to download files from it over a
14.4kbps dialup. (What bozo put that thing in as a Web server?)
Fortunately for me, I have a shell account on a T1, so I can circumvent
this problem.

On the theory that he put it up on his Web site so people could read
it, I have taken the liberty of preparing a gzipped PDF version at
<URL:http://www.pobox.com/~kragen/muniv.pdf.gz>. Unfortunately, it's
1,469K after you un-gzip it, compared to the 75K gzipped PostScript
version. gzip compresses it down to 124K; WinZip (among other things)
can un-gzip the document.
I hope that the author has the time and the space to put a PDF version
on his own web site, because I'm a little tight on space.
Better software tools than the ones I have could probably shrink the
raw PDF version to 150K-200K or so.
The paper is 19 pages.
It begins something like this:
The Mandelbrot set is universal
Curtis T. McMullen
March 13, 1998
Abstract
We show small Mandelbrot sets are dense in the bifurcation locus
for any holomorphic family of rational maps.
1 Introduction
Fix an integer d >= 2, and let p[c](z) = z^2 + c. The *generalized
Mandelbrot set* M[d] is a subset of C is defined as the set of c such
that the Julia set J(p[c]) is connected. Equivalently, c is an element
of M[d] iff p[c]^n(0) does not tend to infinity as n approaches infinity.
The traditinal Mandelbrot set is the quadratic version M[2].

Should be:
Fix an integer d >= 2, and let p[c](z) = z^d + c. The *generalized
[etc]
Hmmm... if you're really interested and have the mathematical skills to
understand it, you could best download the .ps version.

I downloaded your pdf.gz with direct open from Netscape and got an
error, "file does not begin with
%pdf"
or some such.
So I loaded to disk and WinZIP unzipped. Same message on this file
muniv_pdf.pdf which is the name WinZip gave it. Then I
renamed the file from muniv_pdf.pdf to muniv.pdf using File Explorer.
Same thing, error.
Then I forget just what the message was. So I double clicked on muniv.pdf
again and if came up fine. In a binary dump the file indeed begins like this
%PDF-1.2...........
Now if you all 'out there' have this much trouble, perhaps gzip should
be dumped in favor of good old pkzip, pkunzip run in DOS. While WinZIP
handles long names and all, it does not seem to here and some other
times I have used it.
Good luck.
Thank you for putting the file up. Please leave it up for a few more
days so I can get it from work.
There is a trick to printing postscript files to a laser printer, straight
from DOS. I have it set up at work. I'll post the trick if there is
interest. Please email:jrhill@nosc.mil if you are. (fractint list only
comes to my home).

To facilitate this approach, I have muniv.pdf.zip up at
<URL:http://www.pobox.com/~kragen/muniv.pdf.zip>. If you have trouble
downloading files, you can probably go to
<URL:http://www.pobox.com/~kragen/muniv.html> which has links to the
two compressed versions.
I would be most surprised if pkunzip could ungzip a file.

Presumably your trick only works if the laser printer speaks
PostScript, no?
There's a program called GhostScript which will let you view PostScript
files on the screen and output them in various different ways. That's
what I used to make the pdf, in fact. GhostScript's pdf output
unfortunately doesn't support compression, though.

One reason I enjoy working with fractals so much is the tangential
exploring. I was working on a new formula, which led me to a new
transformation. One image to come out of the transformation is
one, which looks like it was painted with a dry brush on a canvas
with a lot of "tooth". Not at all the typical Fractint fractal.
Enjoy,

I really hate to ask but.....
I just recently discovered the amazing world of fractals, Fractint and
this list. Is there an FAQ that I can refer to in order to avoid asking
the same newbie questions like how I can use the formulas posted here in
Fractint to see the designs. (Most likely a copy and paste
somewhere???)
Thanks for your patience,
Judy

Damien and Christian have been nominated for inclusion in the
inFamous iFAQ (inFrequently Asked Questions).
http://home.san.rr.com/jayrhill/iFAQ/iFAQ.html
I know of a blind man who uses a text to audio software/hardware device to
read email and surf the net. Attachments to email and the highly irritating
'watermark' at Geocities cause him no end of trouble! He has asked all
his friends to complain to Geocities. (Of course, he does not subscribe
to this list. Who knows what a par file would sound like?)
I set up on Geocities before getting my Road Runner account. My fractal stuff
is spread across both sites. Since then they have put in the water mark.
Luckily,
I host most of my good stuff like Dr. J from Road Runner. Since I am about out
of
room (Dr. J files etc.) I have been looking around for another home.
Here are a few of the dozen I have looked at.
http://www.fortunecity.com offers 20Mb (nearly twice what Geocities gives) and
http://www.cybercities.com/ offers unlimited space as does
http://www.spree.com/
Other possibilities are
http://www.freeservers.com (12Mb),
http://xoom.com/home/ (11Mb) and
http://www.homestead.com/ (5Mb)
The trouble is, it is hard to check out these sites for look and
feel since these addresses only lead to signing up. As to real
pages folk have set up there, that is another question. They may
all have objectionable 'features' in their quest for ways to pay the bills.
Random popup windows and banners on your page are certainly
expected, but the watermark is going too far.
One consideration I'm wondering about. What is the best 'village' to join.
Most of these sites have categories like art and science which seem the
closer to fractals than some others. Some of these sites seem to have no
detectable organization. Maybe it does not matter.
As one can see, my Geocities site
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/3825/
is in the science section where I have such things as the
Area of the Mandelbrot set
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/3825/Period-Area-16.html
but my Road Runner site is more art like...Fractal of the Night...
http://home.san.rr.com/jayrhill/FotN/FotNindx.html
Another consideration is the methods offered for building your site.
Geocities has a nice HTML interface (which only works with Netscape,
I'm told) so you can upload, edit and manage you pages right on the
web. Others like my Road Runner account require use of FTP. That
is OK for one site, but working several will require putting in addresses and
passwords for each every time I log in. Either of these methods is OK, really.
Some sites offer so called quick page builders of which I am uncertain how
flexible they would be for setting up a fractal site.
Comments anyone? I'd like see some (any) actual URLs of and hear
from fractal folk at these sites?
Jay
BTW. The new address for the sci.fractals FAQ
http://fractal.mta.ca/sci.fractals-faq/
does not answer!

Hello, everyone--
Another way to get around the pop-ups and watermarks: I have most of my
space-eating image files stored at GeoCities, along with a couple
"dummy" HTML documents. That way, GeoCities can attach all of the
pop-ups, banners, watermarks, etc. they want; No one will ever see
them! My URL for unhindered viewing is with Xoom ( http://xoom.com/ ),
which doesn't subject its members to the above mentioned indignities.
My thanks to Luke Plant for suggesting Xoom and Sylvie Gallet for her
web site structure tips.
The results are at http://members/xoom.com/PaulDeCelle/welcome.html
The only problem I've had is somewhat frequent "connection reset by
peer" error messages. Clicking "Reload" usually works...
I've also added a couple of new images and cleaned up my PAR and FRM
files - They're now in ZIP format, and (should) be directly extractable
into Fractint without any editing.
Paul

Yes, but they have a horrendous banner on top of the page! I have a site there though
and plan to use it just like Paul uses his GeoCities site. At first I tried to do
this with Crosswinds (unlimited space; no ads) but not only is it intolerably slow
much of the time, they actually deleted my entire site while I was away from home
traveling!!!

I agree with Paul that this is probably the best outfit for service without
"indignities." I have a site here devoted to photography, so there is no room there
to hide fractal images, though I have some zip files - pars and formulas - here
accessed through my Geocities fractal site. Xoom does send you a spam about once a
week trying to sell some clipart and other stuff, but that is much preferable to
pop-up ads and banners and watermarks.

Yes, Paul, I got that too, twice in fact, while visiting your site a few minutes ago.
GeoCities does offer what they call GeoPlus: 25 MB space with no pop-ups and no
banners, for only $4.95 a month. That is what I have for my fractal site, and I think
it is worth it. With GeoPlus you also have a choice of having or not having the
watermark. If you access the site with the special personal URL you get - such as
/~gedeonp/ (see below) - you don't get the watermark. If, on the other hand, you
access the site with the "homestead address" - such as /SoHo/Coffehouse/4094/ - you
do get the watermark. If they make the watermark mandatory on the GeoPlus sites too,
I will probably leave them, though I don't know where I would go.
Killing the pop-ups as suggested by Damien is nice, but it solves less than half the
problem. I certainly hate the pop-ups when they appear in my browser, but I am even
more concerned that visitors to my web sites should not be exposed to them.
