If anyone finds his/her URL too long, he/she can always consider taking a V3
link. An example. The Fractint List ICQ # List (BTW, I probably will do a
major check for updates this weekend) is offially located at
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Network/6493/fractinticq.html
which has a v3 link:
http://come.to/fractinticq
PROS
- - Shorter URL
- - You can use a 'cloaking device' such that the v3 link will be shown instead
of the full URL
- - It's FREE
- - If you move your pages, you just edit the V3 link profile. You'll have a
constant URL forever
- - You can choose between fly.to, come.to, welcome.to, surf.to and some others
I guess.
CON
- - You have to place a small banner on your page (i have that) OR you should
have a popup window OR an advertizement delay page (I don't recommend that)
NOTE
If you use Geocities (and probably others) you should DISABLE the cloaking
device. You have to do this because of the relative urls of the form /xxx/yyy
that Geocities uses within JavaScripts. If you don't disable it, you'll get a
script error and you can't just rely on the assumption everyone's got
JavaScripts disabled.
XOOM has no problems with this.
So just go to http://come.to (or http://fly.to, etc.) You don't need to go to
welcome.to to get a welcome.to V3 link though, all choices are possible from
all pages.
I may really be something to consider. I guess most of you (like me) can't
remember all those terrible Geocities URLS :)
Hmmm. I forgot I had a XOOM account (since a month), but haven't moved in yet.
I still got to build some pages... and a Fractal Gallery.
>Hope this isn't too off-topic
Guess not. A lot of use use these services, especially Geocities. Lot of space
can be useful for fractallers I guess :-)

I suggest you do the same for

www.freeyellow.com
Although the last one isn't so common, you shouldn't be surprised to get
*THREE* popup windows!

The first time I read that part, I thought you were talking about the
danger of loosing your account because you used "tricks" to break their
ads. They're are pages on geocities explaining how. I read it again and
get how the advertisers did something they could but shouln't have. :)
Its a shame that the ultimate in internet repetitives doesn't quite fit
here. Me too! :) er I agree.

I now have an account with my provider for 5megs at $20 dollars a year.
I'm going to be moving the primary pages there and use geocities at a
place for older galleries.

Here I can see that I made at least one assumption too many. The people
who use geocities don't get to make the advertising go away without
going to another provider that doesn't add it. But, they do get to
choose "partly" what form it takes.
1. Add the code to insert a geoguide on everypage. Pop-ups don't happen
on a page with a properly installed geoguide. As of last testing.
2. Don't use geoguides and let the "infrequent" happen. I swear their
"infrequent" seems like almost always.
3. When you link to a larger image, you can have no add by linking
straight to a picture. Although, not using an html wrapper makes your
surfer use the back button.
4. Cheat and disable the watermark for all those people who didn't
disable javascript. Somebody told me the trick but I forgot it because I
had no plan of violating the agreement. When I signed up, I agreed to
the terms of service, including the invisible ink clause where they
intend to abuse you more and more harshly till you leave.

I'm sorry that barely came off so poorly. It was meant as an example of
a machine that is probably in the middle of the pack on performance with
respect to the stuff that is commonly in use right now.

No real problem. I tend to be overly wordy. As compensation I try to
skimp on the parts that I assume are common knowledge. My track record
in this list seems to be rather abysmal. I'm about to give up on that
effort and let people skip my posts because of excessive size. It will
be better than the reputation of rude, thieving, fool that I have
acquired, judgeing from the responses to my posts so far.

I can suggest fortunecity.com. I have read their terms of service
agreement. I'll check out xoom.com.
I would recommend against homestead.com. The last time I read their
terms of service page, they had a clause that looked open to abuse if
they or future owners of the company turn out to be not so nice people.
The point of broad interpretation was around how far their rights
extended over the content on your page.
I haven't read any other agreements, so I cna't say for or against
anyone else. Geocities and fortunecity looked harmless enough to my poor
vision that last time I looked.

Hi Paul. I liked your page very much. Keep on making fractals. Regarding your
comment on the fractals' nature (art or not?), well, I consider that it is
art. It's more than that, because it comes from a science.
I did not care too much about the adds - they showed on different windows -,
and the download time was fine for me (I use a microwave server).

Really, I think this is a good idea for everyone. I don't believe the
economics of things like geocities can work out profitably. I think
that what will happen is that they will insert more and more intrusive
ads until they go bankrupt.
In the meanwhile, most of them have unreasonable policies (if a minor
sets up a GeoCities Web page, for example, they can't put their email
address on it!) and fairly annoying ads anyway.
$20 per year for 5 megs sounds pretty cheap. Have you checked out your
provider's EDGAR filings to find out if they are profitable?
Using a provider that goes out of business (or kicks you out, or drives
you away) has the problem that your URL changes, so you won't be
findable anymore.

- Really, I think this is a good idea for everyone.
I concur. Many ISPs even include free web space with a "standard" dial-up
access account. Five megs seems to be the common number. You *can*
actually do quite a bit with five megs. One drawback, though: check the
fine print of your ISP's Acceptable Use Policy to see if they restrict
bandwidth on personal sites to a certain amount each month. Some people
who didn't check have had their sites become popular, and then received a
bill from their ISP for several hundred dollars for the extra bandwidth
used. Typically removing the site will get you out of having to pay the
bill, but having to take the site down kinda stinks. Dedicated home page
sites typically don't have bandwidth limits. The *least* active gallery at
fractalus.com does 600M per month in traffic... for about 500 visitors.
- I don't believe the economics of things like geocities can work out
- profitably.
Advertising is big bucks; GeoCities brags that they get 850 million page
views per month. With those kinds of numbers, they can charge a premium
for advertising. However, things may change for GeoCities. GTE (which
accounts for 4% fo the backbone of the net) has announced they will soon
refuse to exchange traffic from Exodus for free. Exodus specializes in
hosting HUGE sites, including GeoCities. Sites like this have a lot of
outgoing traffic, and very little incoming. Usually peering agreements
like the one between GTE and Exodus are made in the expectation that
traffic is equal in both directions, but for Exodus that's clearly not the
case. So GTE probably wants to change it from a peering agreement
(cooperation of equals) to more of a purchasing bandwidth agreement (like
you'd normally have with an ISP). If that happens, and other backbone
providers do something similar, big hosting sites will have their economics
turned upside down, and GeoCities could be in trouble.
- Using a provider that goes out of business (or kicks you out, or drives
- you away) has the problem that your URL changes, so you won't be
- findable anymore.
You can use a V3 link like Christian suggested, or register a full domain
name. Registering a domain name is easier than ever; it costs just $70 for
two years to register the name, and $50 per year to have someplace like
NameSecure redirect it to the actual web site. (NameSecure's fee also
includes e-mail redirect.)

Hi all,
Mainly because Dean-Christian Strik (which i know very well) told me this
list was quite interesting, I became a member too.
Don't expect too mmany messages from me; I will first observe the
conversation(s) for a while.
I promised Dean-Christian Strik to install ICQ as soon as i became member of
this mailing list, so if all goes well you will find me in one of the next
updates of Christian's ICQ list.
Cubic,
my personal e-mail adres is cubic@mediaport.org

Subject: (fractint) version 20
I don't want to be a nudge, but when is v20 coming out? I have
been looking forward to working with the evolver and "formula"
type Mandelbrot/Julia spacebar toggle features (among others),
and the contest has reminded me of their absence. In lieu of
a full release, is a compiled version of the current development
code available somewhere?
Thanks, Bud
