Sounds plausible to me; it certainly matches my experience - especially
since the main M-set is the only one (that I've seen) that _doesn't_ have a
filament working its way up the cardioid. Counterexamples welcome!

Subject: (fractint) Facing which way?
Hi!
An earlier exchange on the list between Lee Skinner and Mark Christenson
referred to the direction that the little (mini) brots faced, away or
toward the main lake, and Mark thought they were all facing away.
Coincidentally with the above exchange I happened across this little
parade of brots - and one or the other of two of them is, or was, confused
- - and possibly a mixed up couple in the middle were not sure which way they
were supposed to be facing so they sort of stretched out a little here and
a little there.
Anyway, I thought the coincidence was interesting and the question
provocative and the conclusion - non-existant.
I've dropped these two pars on the list. One, Brot's Gold Shores was the
first image, and the second, Wrong Way Brot, was just another zoom in, till
I spotted that the two brots were facing each other - or vice versa - or
whatever. The guy on the right seems a little the worse for wear. Don't
know what happened to him.
The Wrong Way Brot is the area of the Gold Shores just to the left of the
right hand large brot. You should be able to see that, I guess, without my
telling you. A Beacham map was used for both of them.
I'd be interested in hearing a reaction to the above.

Bud,
You may be right. And a good technique if you are in seahorse valley. B=
ut
unfortunately, your observation doesn't help at all with the images that
I'm currently working with. These are midgets near (but not on) the far
western spike of the m-set. Out here, the midgets are as plentiful as
anywhere else, but hidden very deep down. All I can see are x's (which
look like filament crossings, but aren't really). (I see no midgets at al=
l
except possibly one at the center of my image.) At the center of each x =
is
a midget. I would have to pick out 8 such x's on the 8 similar filaments=
,
and search each for the eventually appearing midget.
However, to see these midgets, I would have to zoom each successively 1=
0,
15, or 20 times at maximum zoom. In the intervening magnifications, the
filaments would bifurcate and circle around so many times that it would b=
e
almost impossible to determine which one was finally entering the "fanny"=
of the eventual midget. It would be easier and faster to zoom outward!

up most of the night fishing out all sorts of fractal objects and designs.
Lots of fun - thanks, Sylvie! Here are 6 pars. Enjoy!

Well, here's another way. As you have probably noticed,
the branch closest to the set has the "widest profile" (from
one side of the filigree to the other); of course the farther
zoomed in to a node you are, the less the difference.
With orderer chaos running the show, I doubt you'll find
a perfect solution; maybe you could write Mr. Mandelbrot
or someone equally well versed (e.g. Michael Barnsley).

Counter-example: The filaments often (more than not?) form spirals which do not
contain a baby 'Brot at the center. Examples are the spirals in the seahorse
valley (tight spirals), the tip of either of the two filaments extending off the
period three bulb (slow spirals), or the junction of the three main filaments
off the tip of the period three bulb (a very slow or 'static' spiral). The
filaments forming these spirals contain evenly-spaced (if you consider a
continuous zoom into the spiral) baby 'Brots along their entire length. These
babies will all have the same relative angle to the tangent to the spiral at the
point they are found. Thus, their orientation in regards to the main body of
the Set is always changing... and since the spiral continues indefinitely, I'll
bet there's an infinite number of Babies pointing in any given direction.
But it sounds like Lee is asking something more specific... I'll give it
another go when I return... Jason Hine

Hmm. Well, if you're right about this -- all the babies will have the
same relative angle to the strand of the spiral they're on, no matter
which strand that happens to be -- then there must be at least two ways
they connect to the main set, since one of the filaments in the spiral
leads to the main set, and the rest lead away from it.

Ah, but Lee asks "Assume that I am looking at a midget somewhere very deep
in the Mandelbrot Set." so if there's no midget at the centre then it's not
a place where Lee's problem applies. What Lee is asking is which of the
filaments emerging from his given midget leads back to the main M-set. (In
a later post replying to Bud he's pointed out that looking at the behaviour
of smaller midgets on each of the filaments to see which way they're
pointing doesn't help as they are frequently too small to be seen.). Bud's
conjecture, which I'm still in agreement with, is that the filament that
leads from the given midget back to the main M-set is the one that emerges
from the cusp of the midget's cardioid. (And I am going to restraing myself
from continuing the South Park theme).

Bud's phrase "midgets always point away from the main lake" refers not to
direction "as the crow flies" (the argument of the coordinates of the
midget) but in terms of a point constrained to moving within the set
itself; in the same way that the shortest path between two points is a
"straight line" even when the shortest path between London and Pudong is
quite blatantly curved.

Subject: (fractint) 6 Pars from Gallet 3-02 - Take 2
(This is a repost. Gaps appeared in the text of the original, which made it
difficult to use as a workable par for Fractint).
Anyway, I set out to explore one of Sylvie Gallet's formulas and stayed up
most of the night fishing out all sorts of fractal objects and designs. Lots
of fun - thanks, Sylvie! Here are 6 pars. Enjoy!
