Subject: (fractint) PAR more DiGiorgi frm pars
Phil DiGiorgi's addition to the gravijul variations collection is very
useful; an excellent adaptation of a Carlson method. Here are nine more
pars of the pd-hc_grav2 formula.

Your pages look *very* nice. One problem on this page - when I
clicked on the left thumbnail in the fifth row (my favorite),
I got the image matching the thumbnail in the sixth row.

Paul,
Thanks for your comments and the bug report. I fixed it and some others
on that page too. I have no idea how they could have gotten mixed up.

Subject: Re: (fractint) shell to dos(2)
Ian,
Hello.
Yes...There was no command.com in my fractint directory so I copied one
from elswhere in the machine and pasted it to fractint but the problem still
persists.
My original motivation for asking was to do a memory check to complete a
report to Robin Bussell in persuit of a fractint bug. But now that you've
explained the purpose of
shell to dos and the operation of command.com I'd like to get it working
because it would save me backing all the way out to dos to access the text
editor.
Anyway....the error messages are the same.
1.The first I get when attempting to access shell to dos from the screen with
an image
present >>" Note: Your graphics image is still squirreled away in your video
adapter's memory. Switching video modes will clobber part of that image.
Sorry-its the best we couls do."
2. The second is after restartint fractint and before selecting a video
mode...
for an instant it seems there is a dos screen. " Shelling to dos-type
exit to return."
From dos if I type command.com it is found and recognized { appearently }
as I see "Microsoft(R) Windows 95
(c) MS corp. 1981-1995"
and have to type exit twice to get windows to restart. Appearently
once to exit
command.com and once to exit dos.
Hummmm.....seems we're on the right track and I'm much more aware of what
I'm looking for at this point after Ians articulate explination....but it's
still not working.
Any and all comments or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Steve

Very nicely done page! The font for the header is great and so is the
color.
I'd love to know what its called.
The layout of everything is very relaxing and easy to access.
I'm going back now to browse around and enjoy this contribution to the web.

Thanks for the return on this subject.
After installing a copy of command.com to fractints directory I'm still
getting no results other than the creative error messages.
Command.com is recognized in dos { outside of fractint } but while still
in the fractint directory .
I'll just watch and see what developes here in the mail.

It looks like some form of "American Uncial", which is a modern version
of a medieval script. It is often associated erroneously with the
Gaelic/Celtic fonts. Though it could be a form of the true celtic
typeface -- Gaelilge, but the "T" doesn't look right for it.

I've been thinking a little on this subject overnight. It may be that
the version of COMMAND.COM you have is not the same as the one
FRACTINT expects, and maybe FRACTINT is issuing some parameters to
the COMMAND.COM that it can't understand...
I can't investigate this much at the moment, as I am away from home
using somebody else's machine (and they don't have FRACTINT , and it
would be a little rude to download it on their phone-bill <G> ) , but
I'll be home by Monday, and I'll have a go at re-creating the problem
you are having.
For now, I hope you are enjoying your excursion to the 'good old

I wanted to see the full text of the Fractint error message you got when
trying to shell to dos. Using a hex editor I found the message:
"Note: Your graphics image is still squirreled away in your video
adapter's memory. Switching video modes will clobber part of that
image. Sorry- it's the best we could do."
This implies that the problem is not that Fractint cannot shell to
dos. If this is correct, playing with the location of command.com
will not help. The problem seems to be either your video card,
Fractint just can't handle that card, or something related to memory
management. If you check the documentation for your video card, it
may be that it has different settings or emulations available.
If so, changing one or more of these might make it more compatible
with Fractint. If changes are available, make sure that you record
the card's settings *before* you make any changes. After all, if
your changes don't work you want to get back to your starting
point easily. Also be aware that your Windows video settings will
probably also be affected. If you are not completely comfortable
with playing with the video settings, you probably should just
leave well enough alone.
BTW, I'm only speculating about this and could very well be
wrong.

Subject: (fractint) Steve: shell to dos alternative
Steve,
I just had a "flash-back". If you only want to shell to dos from
Fractint so you can use an editor, there is another way.
As I said, you can't switch between programs easily in DOS.
Back when dos was king, people wrote programs that were
TSR's (Terminate and stay ready). These were little programs
that would remain in memory when you exited them. If you
wanted to get back to them, you didn't have to reload them
but just hit a predefined key combination and they would
pop right back up. When you did this, they would temporarily
take over the screen from whatever program you were running.
Then when you exited them, you would be returned to your
original underlying program.
They had a few limitations. Usually they would not work if the
screen was in a graphic mode. In the case of fractint, you would
have to get to a text screen (such as the help screen) before
invoking the tsr program. They would, of necessity, take up
some valuable system memory while in use. Sometimes the only
way to remove them from memory was to re-start your computer.
It's been a long time since I used TSRs so I can't make any
specific recommendations. But you should be able to find a
repository of old MS-DOS shareware/freeware somewhere on the
web. Look for tsr editors (tsrs were also often called
pop-ups) and I'm sure you'll find something. Just remember
to run the tsr editor *before* you run Fractint.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Re: (fractint) shell to dos
Let me make a comment about Fractint's shell-to-dos feature.
Fractint does not release any memory before shelloing to DOS. Therefore when
you attempt to shell to DOS, there is no guarantee that there is enough free
memory to successfully load command.com. Some programs do better than
fractint when shelling to DOS. These programs release memory the program is
using before going to DOS. We could improve this situation by radically
changing Fractint's memory architecture, which would entail a tremendous
amount of work for a limited benefit.
On my Win95 system, the mem command reports
<FontFamily><param>Courier New</param>(outside fractint)
Total memory free under 1 MB 543K
(after shell to DOS from inside fractint)
Total memory free under 1 MB 80K<FontFamily><param>Arial</param>
So you see that on my system there is only 80K of free conventional memory
when you shell to DOS. On someone else's system with some TSR programs,
network drivers etc., it is easy to imagine having 80K less memory. On such a
system, Shell-to-DOS wouldn't work at all. Even on my system, 80K isn't
enough to do much. Most people who use shell-to-DOS probably use it to
delete and rename files, etc. From time to time people ask us to add such a
capability to fractint itself. We have resisted burdening an already large
program like Fractint with file management functions, but perhaps we should at
least allow file deletion or renaming from some of the file list screens.
However, if you are running Win95, you can simply run another DOS shell
(click on the MS-DOS icon) while running Fractint, and use alt-tab to switch
between windows.
I hope this casts a little light on things.

Yes, The above is understandable.
My machine shows 524K free before fractint, slightly under your 543K and
as I haven't been able to check mem with fractint open....and windows says
command.com is 91K....
well...no problem.

Hopefully /robin and Jonathan will see this, but if not, please apprise them.
I think that one of the more effective ways to work filename manipulation
would be to simply give the option to name the file at save. {an empty field
reverting to the 'fractxxx.gif} I think that just that item alone would halt
all issues with filenames. Evertyhing else is, as you pointed out, bloatware.

the reader could follow each through the process. Unforuantly the formula

Hi Jon,
>Unforuantly the formula now produces something that doesn't resembel the

Your formula:
>frm:jcamp03 {
> u = x = real(pixel)
> v = y = imag(pixel)
> :
> x = x^2 + flip(y^2) + u
> y = 2*u*y + v
> z = x + y
> |z| <= 4
>}
should be changed to:
frm:jcamp03 {
u = real(pixel)
v = imag(pixel)
z = 0
:
x = real(z)
y = imag(z)
old_x = x
x = x^2 - y^2 + u
y = 2 * old_x * y + v
z = x + flip(y)
|z| <= 4
}
This will give you the Mandelbrot set. You won't get much
with the par that gave the nice image with your original
formula, however. Anyhow, you may have discovered a nice
new formula (a lot of them are discovered this way).
