Subject: Re: (fractint) The Search for O
Chris...
You can make o-ish fractals for your very own self by using the OK series of
formulas which are part of the fractint.frm file that comes with fractint
version 19.6. I used Bob's excellent advice and downloaded one of the gifs at
spanky to see if it contained all of the data fractint needs....and it did!!!
After viewing O's efforts....I fiddled with the formula myself to come up with
o-wiz1 { ; (c) A Wilczynski May 25, 1998 t= 0:00:32.37 on 266 PII

I would also suggest you take a look at some of Damien Jone's formulas.....I've
gotten some rather similar using them.
Thanks for pointing out yet another wonderful feature at Spanky!! and welcome to
the list

Tim let me have a peek at the developer's version of fractint....and in the next
version he has kindly included the ability to save only the color map part of
the pars......with enhanced squishability or something too!! that's techy talk
for the "colors will be saved better."
I've re-done about half of the new color maps using the developer's
version....and it works great. I'll let you know when the upgraded versions are
posted.

Rui...
You should be able to use MIRC for chatting even though your isp is AOL....I
know many people from AOL who do. Download MIRC from
http://www.mirc.co.uk/
I believe the AOL software also has a chat client which you could use instead of
MIRC....you will have to check your help files. And.....since Netscape and AOL
are now in a strategic partnership, you ought to be able to use Communicator (if
you want to take up the 10megs of space it uses on your hard disk.)
To use MIRC....download it into it's own folder, install, then run the program
while you are connected to AOL. I'm assuming you have WIN95 and can squish AOL.
I tried AOL at a friend's house and didn't like it AT ALL. Their software is
invariably behind what is available for free on the web.
Good luck!!

'nother thing: While you are there (and to carry Paul's suggestion farther..):
Control Panel/System/Device Manager/keyboard ; open (click on "+"), does
this read the same as Control Panel/Keyboard (highlight) and
now/Properties? It should. (both should be reading something like "Standard
101/102 or MS compatible?) While here, check tabs (general, driver,
resources). Does this read driver not necessary or words to that effect? Or
update driver? (Think Bob asked if driver was updated).
Are there any conflicts showing: (!) (in yellow) {BTW, if this is already
familiar to you...}
Are there any conflicts elsewhere? e.g.: video controllers, system devices?
And what does your keyboad properties say? "Standard 101/102 or MS

If a question was asked, "How do I configure my
*proxy* settings?" what does 'proxy' mean in this setting?
I know what proxy means, in a court room, etc., I don't know how it is used
in computer-talk.
If some instructions said "You can move your
*cookies* to....." What are *cookies*?
If a 'something' is *docked* - what does that mean?
My sweet little puppy has a 'docked' tail. Same thing?
I've now got to go out and mow my lawn. I better have some answers by the
time I get back or..."I'll *dock* all your tails, toss my *cookies* all
over your keyboards, and do it all by *proxy*. :~/ or 8-| or

But, seriously folks.......!

There are several hundred websites dedicated to such explanations. My
first suggestion would be on how you may go about using the various
Search Engines that are available. Then you might be able to do the
following:

I had not seen where he had used any of the OK frms; must have been on some

Usually it means a computer that sits between you and the rest of the
Internet; whenever you want to get some information from some computer
out on the internet (say gentle.dyn.ml.org), instead of asking
gentle.dyn.ml.org directly, you ask your proxy, your proxy asks
gentle.dyn.ml.org, and relays the response back to you.
Proxy settings are probably what computer to use as a proxy for
web-browsing and how, but they could be other things too.

Cookies are little pieces of information, meaningless in themselves,
that are just used to establish your identity. The idea is that you
generate a random string of bits, which becomes a shared secret between
you and some computer that cares who you are. Whenever you want it to
know it's you, you send it the cookie. Passwords are an example.
Probably they're talking about HTTP cookies; a web server can send you
a cookie and request that you send it every time you visit that server,
so it can tell it's the same person -- even if you switch IP addresses,
for instance. By default, most browsers will accept all cookies
without telling you, and then send them back to the server on every
subsequent connection. A lot of people don't like this, for privacy
reasons.
> If a 'something' is *docked* - what does that mean?
On NeXT machines and Linux (or Unix) machines running WindowMaker, the
"dock" is this little buttonbar on the screen. You can drag an
application onto the dock, and it will become a little button on the
dock until the next time you click on it.
"docking toolbars", "docking popups", "docking menubars", etc., are
normally-floating things (that is, you can drag them around with your
mouse -- they're not attached to anything else) that will stick to the
edge of the application's main window if you drag 'em there. These
mostly exist on Win95 and WinNT4.
> My sweet little puppy has a 'docked' tail. Same thing?
Hope not :)
Hope this helps. Feel free to pass it on to anyone you think could
benefit.

Cookies are more than just random strings of bits, more often than not. =
In Javascript, you can make a page drop information about the way you =
last left a page; for example, if you have Internet Explorer 4, the =
default homepage (home.microsoft.com) can be set up to look (more or =
less) the way you want it. You can change the search service you want =
to use, the stock quotes you look at, your favorite links, and when you =
go to that page (or you start up your browser) it will appear the way =
you last left it. The settings are saved on your computer in a little =
cookie file, and are retrieved when you view the page. This way, the =
server doesn't have to store the information itself, and send you a =
different page depending on what you want it to look like. Every user =
gets the same page, really, and the Javascript uses the cookies on each =
individual's computer. Some people don't like cookies though, because =
the server can track your usage, such as where you last were, how often =
you visit, etc. For example, if you go to one page on the server, and =
enter you name and email address to subscribe to a mailing list, then =
later on you decide you want to download a trial version of a program =
from that server, if they gave your browser a cookie, they can find out =
your email address. Then, they can use it to find out who has the trial =

I'm curious as to a few things,
First: How can I pull plotting tricks like plotting orbit points and assigning
them escape values, a la mandelcloud.
I think there's a way, but I haven't the first clue how to capture those. I
could use some help there :) (can you say "Doppler effect?")
Next: Was there a dominant thinking among all of you about the need to
separate the PAR/FRM data from the rest of it? If not, I'd like to plead a
case for using the subject-line tagging. Regardless of what mail client
(although this especially true with integrated ones like AOL) it is easiest to
work with a visible note when there is one present in the post. Some of you
are probably just forgetting till you after send it <g>. Even when it's more
chat than par, we're still lookin' for that par!! It's just plain easier :)
(extra note - this will also streamline filtering for reposting later, should
we actually split the lists as proposed.)
Last: umm... I forgot :) Don'tcha just _hate_ that?
Rambling,
Chris

Cool! Now that is an idea that offers all sorts of variations.
One fly in this ointment is that due to the nonstandard |.| function
Fractint uses, the force fields are actually dropping off according to an
inverse _fourth_ power rule, rather than an inverse square one. But that
just suggest yet another direction for future exploration. I still like it,
as the par below suggests.

Subject: (fractint) L-Systems
This morning, I wrote a small (about 5K) program that does L-Systems.
It's written in Perl at the moment; later on I might translate it into
C so it'll be easy to run on a machine without Perl and
Right now, it just does the fractint.l Dragon curve; I'll give it the
ability to read from fractint.l or equivalent in the next couple of
days.
It outputs in HPGL (which is handy if you have a pen plotter; most of
us don't) or in PostScript. I wrote it because Fractint's L-Systems
render onto your raster screen; if you then try to print the results,
all the lines are jaggedy and you're limited to the resolution of the
screen. (This looks bad on a laser printer, but it looks even worse on
a pen plotter -- I bought a couple last weekend.) Now I can drive my
pen plotter sensibly with L-Systems.
I don't know if anyone is actually interested in playing with this
(after all, you need something that speaks HPGL or PostScript, and you
need to have Perl installed, and it only does one fractal), but if you
are, it's at <URL:http://www.pobox.com/~kragen/sw/lsys>.
Does anyone have suggestions about what vector formats would be more
widely readable by Win95 users? After all, almost half the PC's out
there have Win95 on them, and most of the other half have something
related. PostScript and HPGL just don't cut it in that world.

Hi,
today I added PartoBat ver. 3.5 to the download area on my page

Because I haven't a PII I need your response (see the original message
from Michael Peters below).

I've uploaded Partobat version 3.5 (will turn up in the libs soon). It should
take care of the runtime error problems on
very fast machines. I patched my Borland Pascal compiler and it should work
now, but I couldn't test it because the
problem never happened on my machine, so there's a slight chance that the
problem is still there. Please let me
know how it goes.
I'll be away for vacation (and offline) until June 12.
btw I have not yet realized Lee's 'savename' feature - the version is the same
as 3.4 except for the runtime error (I
hope).

Windows metafile (.WMF). Not sure where you can find out how to create
such a file without the Windows API, though.

I've updated the color pars at my website using the developer's version of
Fractint. Tim says the newer version gives better color fidelity when using the
par format. The maps are the same, but the colors may be better .....only the
par versions have been changed and they will work using the current version of
Fractint.
Also, I've added a par file of all the maps I've made for Paul Carlson's
formulas....the pars are in a new gallery you can see at
