Subject: (fractint) slow dos???
Hi there ....
Check my logic here please.
Win 95 runs 'on top' of dos version 4.1 in my machine.
Win 95 always runs on top of dos? Even later versions of dos....say 6.1?
Could one say there is a major difference between dos v.4 and v 6 to
the point
that v.6 is an 'emulation ' { of earlier versions} and actually runs on top
of windows?
I'm trying to justify the drag in response time, accessing paramater
screens,
between my machine T.I. pent 100.... and my friends machine Pent.II 266.
My machine { the pent 100 } is much faster accessing dos parameter screens in
fractint. {of course the 266 generates faster } but drag in the 266 opening
z,x,y,i,@ ....is annoying. I talked to the maker of the 266 and the razel
dazel he gave me didn't sound believable... so I'm asking people I trust. :-)
Any comment or input is welcome.
Thanks

Hi there...
Often I get the pars and frms from the digest. I use note pad. I select search
\
find and type formulafile or reset=1960 and I
hit search.
I'm led directly to what I want.
The digest is a cool thing!

I have mixed feelings about this. I hope no one takes this wrong. I'm
not trying to be critical. But the subscriber's to this list, including
myself, haven't done a great job of following Tim's requests so far.
We post off-topic messages. When we respond to a message, we tend to
include most or all of the original message in our reponse. If Tim
addresses one specific issue and says, "Enough," some of us still have
to get in the last word with a few more postings on that issue. . .
and so forth.
I doubt that a specific par and frm list would in fact be restricted to
par and frm postings, and I doubt that the Fractint Mailing List would
ever be completely free of par and frm postings.
Also, RJ is correct . . . the discussion is often intertwined with the
pars. I'd would also hate to lose that.
I agree with Maria. I'd like to see the list left the way it is now.
Linda

Steve,
Win95 *always* runs on top of DOS 7 (I think 4.1 is the version of Windows,
not DOS). DOS 7 is a 'special' version of DOS Microsoft wrote to run Win95.
It is very similar to Windows 3.1 running on top of DOS 5 or DOS 6
(although Microsoft tried to hide the fact that Win95 runs on top of
anything).
Anyway, your slowness could be caused by many things, but perhaps it is
caused by your video card changing from graphics to text mode. The CPU
speed would have nothing to do with this. Some video cards are slower than
others when changing modes.

Thanks Nick...for confirming my belief that Win95 always runs ontop of dos. {
Typing " "ver" in dos produces version 4.1 in my machine
and 6.1 in the other } I'll look into the video card suggestion.

Subject: (fractint) Bug in formula parser ? (v. 19.6)
During my experiments om mutating M-sets by strategically placing
additional parameters inside the formula I have noticed a bug/feature of
the formula parser. It might have been already noticed by somebody else
but I just want to make sure the developers know about it. The following
formula:
okM_01{ z=0
c=pixel:
z=z*z*z*z/(z*z+p1)+c
|z|<=8
}
converges to the standard Mandelbrot with p1 approaching 0. When p1 is set
to any non-zero value, everything works as it should. But when p1 is set
to 0 all of a sudden the M-set disappears completely. This also happens
when the formula is rewritten using sqr() or z^n notation. Try writing the
Mandel formula as z = z^4 / z^2. It won't work. Of course there is a
singlularity at (0,0), but the rest of the formula should just work out
fine.
Who has an answer ?
Oliver

Oliver,
- The following formula:
-
- okM_01{ z=0
- c=pixel:
- z=z*z*z*z/(z*z+p1)+c
- |z|<=8
- }
-
- converges to the standard Mandelbrot with p1 approaching 0.
z*z+p1 also converges to zero (on the first iteration) as p1 approaches
zero. This causes a divide by zero error (undefined result) and the parser
stops iterating.

I side with Linda in wanting to keep all Fractint-related mail on one
list server. Another problem that is quite noticeable with the present
operation of this list server is that there are far too many
complimentary personal messages being sent; messages that tell someone
that he or she has written an interesting formula, made a pretty color
map or created an interesting design. We all don't have to be apprised
of that. Send your compliment to that person by private e-mail--I do.
I participate on other mailing lists and have found that when the
traffic flow drops too much and there isn't very much dialog, then
others tend to unsubscribe from the lists because of the lack of
activity. I'm sure the newbies that have joined us in recent months
would be happy to know that someone always will be around to answer
whatever questions they may have and not feel that those questions will
go unanswered because others have gotten fed up with all the e-mail
clutter and either decided to become mute or else unsubscribe from the
list.
This is a great and informative list server. Let's keep it that way with
continued open discussion and the sharing of formula and parameter
files, and color maps.

I also agree with Marie and Linda, and for pretty much the same reasons
(which I won't bother to repeat to keep the posting short).

Subject: (fractint) Fractal art is a topic in upcoming book
Hi Fractalizens:
I received information from an outside source that Ivars Peterson, a
journalist and author specializing in mathematics, was currently writing
a book about mathematics and art. The book, Fragments of Infinity: A
Kaleidoscope of Mathematics and Art, is scheduled for publication by
Wiley next year.
Since we were discussing books about fractals on the Undernet and on the
Fractint list server, I asked Mr. Peterson if his proposed book would
mention fractal art. It appears that it will. Appended here is my
inquiry to him and his response (in reverse order).

Fractals will certainly come up in several contexts. Thanks for
your interest.

Hi:
Will your upcoming book Fragments of Infinity have a chapter regarding
fractals and art? We're compiling a list of fractals-related books on a
fractals-related list server and wonder if we should keep a lookout for
release of your book.

Thanks. I definately don't want to both with it if it's too math oriented.
I got as far as college Algebra and through in the towel, so if it requires
calc or trig knowlege, I refuse to look at it.
I just took a glance at amazon.com, and I've pasted a list of what sounds
good below...hopefully some of you guys have read these, and can tell me if
they're worth it. :)
Fractals : The Patterns of Chaos : A New Aesthetic of Art, Science, and
Nature

An Eye for Fractals : A Graphic and Photographic Essay
by Michael McGuire
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201554402/u/002-2486309-9601000
(There was no info about this one at all, but it sounds interesting from the
title. Anyone read it?)
And, if anyone cares, all of Amazon's fractal books are here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/cache/browse/science---nature/mathematics/
fractals/list/002-2486309-9601000
(Be sure to paste that in. That's one long URL.)
Anyway, they all sound interesting. Expensive, but interesting. But
there's always the library. I'm sure at least one of them will help me.
Again, I'd prefer one that concentrates on the artistic side of fractals.
Also, one that looks explicitly at Fractint would be good. :)
In the mean-time I can read fractint.doc :)
