No, it's free software, which means you can use or modify it just about
however you like, a lot like Fractint.
It's a text editor, originally written for ITS in the early 1970s.
It's grown since then, and now it includes a Lisp programming
environment, an integrated development environment for other languages,
a mailreader, a news reader, a web browser, and some other things. It's
so good, it won its author -- Richard M. Stallman -- a MacArthur
Foundation "genius" grant.
Its author has also been a primary force behind the creation of Linux.
It's rather hard to begin using, in my experience. Most of the best
Unix programmers use it, because it's extremely easy to use once you
learn how.
However, it *also* has the ability to be programmed to do all sorts of
perverted things, like act as a file manager, without too much
effort, and be fairly easy to use at the same time.

It does have a file-manager in it already. It doesn't display
thumbnail .gifs or anything yet, let alone invoke Fractint to render
.pars. It would require programming to add these capabilities.

Myself, I don't have Emacs installed on my NT machines at work or my
Linux machine at home, because it's kind of slow. It's a great editor,
though.

I love the structure, Joe!
I got an error, and I *think* I fixed the par properly. The second one is
the same zoom with a colormap I made yesterday(Angela's advice has really
paid off. Compare this to the one I posted yesterday. Much better IMHO!).
Hope you don't mind. I think it brings out the detail more. Enjoy!

Okay, time to be socially responsible.
Given the volume of traffic on this list and the limited spare
time in our lives, I'm sure most of us have to arbitrarily limit
what we cut, paste, and review. I am as guilty as anyone,
and would like aknowledge some nice stuff I missed the first
time around. I just got done reviewing the April '98 par
collection, something that would have not been possible
without Les St. Claire's efforts (thanks, Les!).
Here, in no particular order, are some of my "new" faves,
and what they remind me of (as necessary):
Paul Carlson:
eqn5j01 - fancy layered gift-wrap ribbons

Wizzle:

hollywood_bowl5 - halo floating above a lotus blossom
Gedeon Peteri:

F_L_Wright_Window - I'm sure Frank would be proud!
Stringy_Spiral - remember those spinning splatter-paint thingies?
Is that enough already?!?

From: Oliver Klimek <klimek@bgb.mannheim-netz.de>
Subject: (fractint) Another newbie
as a well-educated new list member I would like to intruduce myself to
you. My name is Oliver Klimek and I am 30 years old. I have studied
physics which allows me to cope with the math side of fractalogy. But as I
am more inclined to the experimental side of science, I have to admit that
rotating quaternions in Hilbert space is not one of my favorite pastimes.
So when it comes to hardcore discussions about Herman rings etc. don't
expect me to participate.
My interest in fractals is about as old as my interest in computers. It
all started when the first mandelbrot programs popped up in the computer
mags in the 80s. I still remeber typing the BASIC code in my little Atari
800 (it was better than the C64 , but nobody wanted to know) and waiting
for half an hour for the basic madelbrot (no pun intended) to render on
320x200. Well, those were the days...
I know Fractint since I had "discovered" the internet in 1990. I have
never used it extensively until lately because I had to delete it from my
machine a couple of times out of disk space problems (shame on me, I know,
but 120 MB is not very much). Anyway, now with a couple of gigs to spare I
decided to reiterate my efforts in fractal design (pun intended).
My primary interest in fractals is not to make "artsy" pictures, but
rather to explore the uncharted quadrants of Fractalonia, to boldly zoom
where no-one has zoomed before and to find interesting things there. It is
sort of like a Fractal Trek approach. I suspect it is my scientific spirit
that forces me to do so. You might call me an
inside=0/outside=iter/decomp=0 purist. This does not mean that I don't
like all these pictures with nifty coloring effects. I love to look at
them, but somehow I think I should do something different. It is true that
with some "special effects" you can make an otherwise boring image look
interesting. But I prefer to go for those that are interesting whitout
having to polish them. There is so much to see out there that there's no
time to waste:) To explain what I mean, here are two example pars using
built-in formulas and colormaps. I didn't bother tweaking the colormaps
because they look just fine.

It had something to do with Fractint originally. It just kinda got lost.

Heres a nice zoom on DMJ-Mand-PNT-And-I. Uses Damien M. Jones' funky

Looked good everywhere...
Loads slow though. Be warned.

If I understand the query correctly, in PSP it should be fairly simple.
Click on the "Text" button on the tool bar (the lg "A") and go from there.
You can add text to the image (an overlay/embedding)using different fonts
and different sizes. This would be similar to signing the art work. You can
also click on "help", index, type in "text", follow instructions...
If you wish to post it, alt.binaries.pictures.fractals is one place that it
would fit (be sure to use a key word in the title - some start with
"Fractal").
The fractal would be viewable in fractint, but only as a .gif, and it would
be somewhat ... altered? ... shall we say? This can be done via a d/d
directly into Fractint, crank it up, hit "R", choose the image.
Hope this helps....

Wow Bud...
I feel like I've been reveiwed by the NY Times Fractal Critic!!!! Thanks for the
kind words.
I too don't have time to comment on every single par, but I do try to LOOK at
them all....and they are all great...keep them coming!! I'm sure part of my
problem is that I get diverted by the pars I see and want to fiddle .....Just A
Bit.....before going on to the next par. Usually justabit turns into several
hours.
It's particularly neat to see the pars from the new folks.....as well as their
progress.....which is pretty astonishing. I wish I'd known about this list when
I was starting out.
Hey!!! I learned something new yesterday........ya can see the whole par by
pressing F2 or something....and I sorted my par list by pushing something
else!!! Instructions were Right there at the bottom of my par....amazing what
happens when you read all this good info the gurus at Stone Soup built into
Fractint....
Thank you all for a fun time on the list
Angela
p.s. Anyone interested in another Fractal Chat this weekend?? Email me direct
wizzle@beachnet.com with suggested day and time. We had a wonderful turn out and
lots of fun last time!!!! Bring those questions and "hot off the press pars"

On what basis should one experiment with maxiter? I'm unfamiliar with how that
affects an image.

Hiya Oliver
Anyone who had an Atari (I did too) and provides pars based on the Barnsley set
MUST be an ok guy.

Anyhow...
Hi Oliver,
Welcome to the list! Very nice images! Especially SpiralOfDoomstiny.
I did have to insert a semi-colon after the opening curly bracket to get
them to run.

I'm sure you don't mean that those formulas which use orbit traps
or bailout criteria more complex than a circle are less mathematically
pure or that the resulting image is less of a fractal than the escape
time level set algorithm. One reason I like to experiment with orbit
traps is that the resulting image contains considerably more information
about the dynamics of the iteration than the escape time algorithm. But
I would have to agree that, without studying the formulas involved, it
would appear that orbit trap formulas are just a form of special effects.
