No, there are 20 X servers, for connecting and doing work. Generally users pick
the one with the lowest load and log on with an X client.

Haven't a clue, the university computer science department runs it, not I.
Anyways, XFMail bombed, it must have done something really BAD to the X server I
had logged onto, because apparently it took the whole thing down...

I was referring here to the client program used to log on the X server machine
and run programs remotely on it, which presents the GUI locally and accepts your
input... seems there's some mixup of terminology because there are 2 kinds of
client...
This was XWin32, the other client the XFMail program, and the X server and
XFMail running on one of 20 linked X machines...

Thanks so much for this.
For those of you who are using ICQ, please check the Fractint ICQ intrest
group I set up. Intrest groups are a way of "gathering" ICQ users with a common
intrest so that others may find them.
the URL is - http://groups.icq.com/group.asp?no=28214 - and the page, while
functional, is incomplete thanks to some javascript woes I'm working through.
It'll be nice and pretty as soon as I get through it all.
Please join if yr so motivated, and enable others who are interested to find
you and Fractint. (we all gotta start somewhere...)

It appears, to this fractal newbie, that a minimalist color rendering
is very fashionable at this point in time. The technique produces
gorgeous metallic-looking objects, that impress the heck out of me,
but they lack warmth...beautiful baubles of gold, copper, bronze,
silver and pewter. "Mardi_gras_dragon" seems to me to to
avoid this coldness by throwing in splashes of scarlet. It's one I'll
keep, especially as it kept my P-166 busy for about an hour!
Thanks Paul: but "dragon"? When I saw all those pseudopods,
I was reminded irresistably of the Beatles song..."Octopussies
Garden". :-)

Greetings:
I've been enjoying the pars that I've seen. Great work!
Q: Is it possible to tell fractint 'not' to ask for a video mode selection {
after initially makeing one} when looking at a series of .gifs?
{It seems once would be enough if they were all intended to be seen in in the
same mode.} I'm using SF6.

Thanks for the feedback.
As long as people find this useful I'll continue to post the collections.
I haven't compared my collection with everything in the official monthly
archive, so
If anyone notices any omissions I'll be glad to attach an addendum to next
month's file.

Sure, just add the following line to your sstools.ini file:
askvideo=no
All kinds of other useful info can be found in the Fractint on-line help files:
When running Fractint press F1 twice (to get to the Main Help Index)
Then select "Startup Parameters, Parameter Files"
Go to the option "Summary of all Parameters"
Here you will find 12 pages of useful information detailing all of the handy
parameters for configuring Fractint exactly the way you want it!
Page 8 has all the stuff related specifically to Video parameters.

The methods I use emphasize form over color. All the fractal elements
have well-defined edges. I'm sure it's not for everybody.

At what resolution? Using my 60 Mhz Pentium it took 4 minutes to
generate a 1024x768 image.

Hmmmm... I think we're talking about two different images.
Mardi_gras_dragon was (I hope!) a classic period-8 dragon that
looked decorated with fruit of 8 colors.

John...
I'm definetly a color medium to minimalist, but I've been trying out some of the
new color maps folks on this list submitted and you might find something there
to suit. Check in the mid-tones section for maps from skydye and droz.....I was
enchanted with some lovely maps which used very warm colors. And I don't see
anything wrong with re-coloring someone's par .......gives a you better idea of
why the colors chosen were chosen. Course you can't claim the par as your very
own.
One hint....Paul Carlson, Sylvie Gallet and Kerry Mitchell often use their
colors in a very precise way.....to match the parameters of their formulas.
Study those maps!!! It took me a while to figure out why Paul did what he does.
At first I just modified his maps with my favorite colors. Now I'm more bold and
will even change the "structure" of the colors......going, say from 2
colors....which Paul so often uses......to 4.
The new color maps are available at:
http://wizzle.simplenet.com/fractals/hints/graphic_hints.htm
I hope to be converting the existing pars there to a newer format by this
evening (thanks to some lessons from Tim), so hold off a day on downloading the
par versions.
BTW......Marie...
Thanks so much for the great color maps. I was experimentint with the ones you
submitted this morning with wonderful results.

of the posts? Can I leave them in the PAR when I clip and save it, and
will they be found there? I have tried clipping just the FRM part and
saving it with a .FRM extension, but it doesn't seen to be working. Any
help would be greatly appreciated!!! TIA, Dave

I tried it, and it didn't seem right, but then I noticed that the monitor wasn't
turned on. So I turned it on, and that was better, but something still wasn't
right... then I noticed that my tape deck was unplugged. After a few more
minutes of rearranging wires, dimming the room lights, etc., I was ready, and
gave it another whirl. Perfect! (I think the power went out briefly during the
performance, but I can't be sure.)
Very Zen - Thanks Justin! <vbg>^2

Subject: (fractint) tchebych.frm
I am interested in a set of formulas named after the Russian
mathematician Tchebychev, though why that choice of a name, I do not
know. There is a formula file named tchebych.frm in the fracxtr6.zip
file available from Spanky. In the comment of this file these formulas
are identified as being derived from a book by Roger Stevens (Advanced
Fractal Programming in C). The file was originally posted on Feb. 10,
1992 by Rob den Braasem. However, at a later time someone modified some
of these formulas, and, unfortunately, reissued these modifications with
the same formula names in a new file called newtcheb.frm. All of these
latter formulas are included in the Orgform compilation under _j_dup.frm
and _m_dup.frm respectively. The source identified therein is
newtcheb.frm. I have not been able to find the latter anywhere. If
someone has this formula file (newtcheb.frm) in its original form,
hopefully including comments, not reconstructed from Orgform, I would
greatly appreciate it if that person could email it to me privately.

Hi Team Fractals:
I privately sent Gedeon this afternoon the original file that was posted
to the USENET on Feb. 10, 1992. Therefore, the search is over and you
may return to normal duties.

Hi, David! I think this is an on topic posting that might interest some
other newbies. So answering it on the list is ok.
You can keep the formula part and the .par part together in one par file
if you are using Fractint v 19.6 and if you leave the:
frm:
at the beginning of the formula part of the two. Using one of Jim's
FOTD files, for example:
==========================
Tsatratpa_MaiKai { ; 13min at 100mhz, 640x480
reset=1960 type=formula formulafile=critical.frm
formulaname=MandelbrotMix4 passes=t

frm:MandelbrotMix4 {; Jim Muth

g=1/f, h=1/d, j=1/(f-b), z=(-a*b*g*h)^j:
z=(a*(z^b))+(d*(z^f))+c,
|z| <= 100
}
===============================
can be cut as one piece of information and pasted into a .par file.
Yes, the formula will be "found."
Or, again using Jim's FOTD:
===============================
Tsatratpa_MaiKai { ; 13min at 100mhz, 640x480
reset=1960 type=formula formulafile=critical.frm
formulaname=MandelbrotMix4 passes=t
center-mag=+0.25553692990429950/-0.0000000000001/1463198
params=1/100/0.1/-2 float=y maxiter=1200 bailout=25
inside=0 logmap=92 symmetry=xaxis periodicity=10
colors=00075D<3>B98CAD<6>KBk<18>mTIoUGoRC<9>ttYtw_sz`<8\
>tsatratpa<9>t_btYbtZb<9>ZkcXlcVlc<11>6oc<17>hGXqAV<6>B\
_f1`i<8>XpV<17>PK7<21>tc_<17>kfimgh<13>MaiKaiGcj<20>lIT\
iHXeGad9p`AsXBw<10>bIfbIg<9>bITbIRdJNbIQ
}
===============================
can be cut and pasted by itself into a .par file and then:
================================
MandelbrotMix4 {; Jim Muth
c=pixel, a=real(p1), b=imag(p1), d=real(p2), f=imag(p2),
g=1/f, h=1/d, j=1/(f-b), z=(-a*b*g*h)^j:
z=(a*(z^b))+(d*(z^f))+c,
|z| <= 100
}
===============================
can be cut and pasted by itself into a separate .frm file. In this
case, the formula MandelbrotMix4 should either be pasted into a .frm
file named critical.frm, or, if you paste it into a .frm file named
something else, then the field "formulafile=critical.frm" should be
changed to the name of the .frm file you are using. For example, you
might use "formulafile=JimMuth.frm"
Make sense? If not, let us know and we'll try again!
Linda

Subject: (fractint) formula syntax
Formula writers:
I've just noticed that some formulas by Paul Carlson contain lines such as
the following:
IF ((d = |w + (0,-.5)|) < size)
Putting assignments inside of other expressions is a common programming
technique in C. This type of expression produces no warnings in fractint v
19.6, and the formula therefore runs and draws images without incident.
There is a problem, however. The fractint parser is not designed to handle
imbedded assignments, and the actual calculations being made may be quite
different than what the formula writer intends. Version 20.0 will report an
error for formulas with lines like this. All assignments will need to be at
the beginning of a formula statement, i.e. in the form
var1=var=2=...=expression.
I'll work with Paul to rewrite the formulas which have these expressions
now, so they'll work by the time 20.0 comes out. The two formulas where
I've noticed this are Series_Balls_Mset and MyEqn_Julia.
