Thanks Bob.....and thanks Paul for another great formula.
I wonder what "normal" people do on a Sunday morning.....I've been

Angela,
Very nice maps you have posted lately with Paul Carlson's atan formula.
However, two of your pars, atan_maps5 and avw_phatan1, froze Fractint up
completely. I believe it is due to the colon in the formula name, because
when I took it out, the pars generated fine. Since no one else mentioned this
problem, I have to consider that this may be due to the way I have Fractint
set up. Or did someone else experience the same?

Thanks. It's true: my formulas are heavily indebted to Bob Carr, but his
fractals are almost always symmetrical. My vice is I try to steer clear of
symmettry but I'm not always successful<g>.

Subject: (fractint) text/code editor
I haven been able to follow everything said about all the programs, but is
there a demand for a editor that colors various types of codes and files?
That really doesn't make sense, so let me explain. The computer science
labs of my college use a text/code editor that a professor made. It's
highly customizeable and pretty simple to use. It's better than notepad,
let me tell you! I do some BASIC and java programming and will learn C
(for Fractint) and C++ (for school) by the year's end. All of these have
different reserved words and delimeters but you can define color schemes
to these languages so the when you open them in the program, various parts
of it will be colored. Comments are colored one thing, reserved words are
colred another, delimeters can be colored anther way.
The greatest part of the program is how easy it is to define another
format. Right now, I'm working on a color scheme for FRM files. Then
I'll work on PARS. It makes code reading a lot easier. The program I'm
referring to is still in its beta stage, so some aspects don't work yet
(like help). But, it's still a great program.
It currently has color schemes defined for various types (Microsoft,
Delphi, Borland, etc...) of .C, .CPP, .ASM, .JAVA, .PAS, .HTML, .BAT, .BAS
(not standard, this is something I made for my copy), .FRM (ditto), etc.
I was wondering if there is enough demand for it to cajole my prof to
distribute the beta copy to Fractint enthusiasts. (I don't think the REAL
copy will be free, though).

Jiho

I have a friend who has been looking for something like this for ages.
He programs ihn everytrhing but alphabet soup ( 8-> ) and has been
saying "if I fully understand him correctly, I very seldom do" what
you described is just what he needs.
BTW are there any "non-programming" purposes for this thing?

Is there any way to post formulas so they don't ask for specific *.frm
files? I save the ones one the list to a file named for the day I
recvieve them i.e. "04191998.frm" I do the same with parameters
"04191998.par" and put them in their each respective directories. I
usually can't use 70% of what comes to the list because of some systax
thing I can't understand one damn bit which means I don't have a clue
what everyone else is going on about until LES posts the mothly
updates on his site by which time I can't remember who said what about
what.
I know thing is whining but It's DAMNED frustrating to spend 30 - 45
minutes copying/pasting/saving only to find out most of ain't gonna
work worth bucks!
Any flames should be sent directly to me.

I don't use it for much else, but it probably can be used for anything
notepad can do... I have uploaded a capture of Fractint.frm in the
program in question to the following URL:

This is syntax highlighting. Several text editors do this; you can, for
instance, find it in vim 5+ with the :syn on command; AY Pad and CodeWright
have it too.
I don't think another is needed--perhaps you could do something like enhance
one that already exists, like vim or emacs (both are freely available).

Subject: (fractint) HELP: Rank neophyte doesn't get colors
I'm brand new to Fractint. I desire to make images with more than 256 options
for colors. I've read the help menus and scoured the help resources on the
web page.
I want images which are true RGB or are 256 levels of the same color. I have
figured out how to VIEW ON THE SCREEN an image which is 256 levels of blue,
but when I save the file and open it in a paint program, Corel PhotoPaint,
I'm back to 256 different or maybe 16 different colors.
I'm so dense I need instructions as detailed as the exact keystrokes. Am I
expecting too much from Fractint?

On a Unix system, I use just such a program, called NEdit, maintained
by Mark Edel at Fermilab. I don't think anyone has yet ported it to
a Microsoft system though: there may be an NT version in the works by
one of the users, but I can't remember for sure. It's freeware, with
an active mailing list of comments and suggestions, and is being
actively maintained.

The program that I mentioned was Multied32 (it does come in 16 bit
version, although i haven't tried it personally).
I recommend it immensely... However, it's not very well documented, so I
also suggest that you look through the batch files in the directory. If I
remember right, the batch file gives you some instructions on
installation... If you have any problems getting to it, I'll have zipped
copy available by http in a day or so. (I have a naturalization interview
to pass and homework to get done...)
The files are at:
ftp.cs.plu.edu/pub/faculty/brink/multied/32bit
or
replace '32bit' with '16bit'.

Right now, yes. Even though Fractint _says_ it has true_color modes, it
only uses the first 256 colors. :-(
Fortunately, when version 20 comes out it _will_ have "true" true-color
support in that you can save a true-color image and it won't just have
the default colormap but really will have all 16 million colors :-)

Now think about makeing a 16 million color map. Won't that be fun? all I
hope is that it comes with a few and not just the default one in 16 million
colors. Just a thought.\

We're probably going to release something similar to the current
developer version as Fractint 20 which won't have truecolor yet. In
terms of recent releases this would be more like "19.7"
The main new features will be the parameter evolver (that lets you
systematically modify parameters and display the results as
thumbnailss.) We are also removing the 2048 pixel limit. I have
partially implemented SOI (synchronous orbits) but don't know if I'll
try to finish it for version 20.0 or get it out the door sooner.
The version numbering problem we have gotten into is that a LOT has
been added since 19.0, so the 20.0 nomenclature is long overdue. In
the past the rationale was that if any significant feature was
added, the major version number would change. The fractional
versions were just bug fixes. This was a good policy, but somehow we
got away from it.
Tim

Hi Team Fractals:
I noticed while cutting pasting these params into this text that the
colors lines split apart similar to what other people complained about
in the past. Then I clicked on the middle box in the upper righthand
corner to bring this text to full screen and it appeared just the way I
wrote it, with no double spacing. So, if you see the colors lines
separated from the rest of the params and double spaced, then go to full
screen to correct it all.
My favorite formulas are Sylvie's. Lots of interesting and unusual
features can be found that suit my style for the abstract. Hope you
enjoy them. If you don't...well, you get what you pay for them. 8-))))

Ignore the above advice. It didn't work like I said it would. As
punishment, my wife just gave me 30 lashes with a wet Mandelbrot
tendril. Ouch!
Don't blame me, honey. It's Murphy's Law. ;-)

Subject: (fractint) .par-plexed QQ?
Greetings...
Its great to be watching the dialogue and hopefully soon I'll be viewing
your work. I have a Q?
I'm experiencing a problem reloading a .par that I did. The original .gif
{ after modification } lets call it the goal of the work... looks
substantially different in shape
than the one that is its source... but also, after attempting to store this to
a .par and then reload it { with out makeing changes } ...It comes back as a
third and distinctly different shape { not what I want }. My way of observing
this is:
1. by loading the enclosed .par
2. applying the enclosed changes
3. storeing modified work to an other par
4. reloading second .par and ....well ....right here is the problem. It isn't
the same
pic. on my machine. Is it on yours?
I may be overlooking something and you might be able to tell me what it
is?...or...
I'm just expecting too much from a pentium 100 40 meg of ram???
If you're interested load this par apply enclosed changes
store to a second par and then attempt to reload it and compare.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thankyou.
Sincerely,
Steve

Bob.....
I don't think you were entirely incorrect. The extra lines are always
added by Netscrape if you paste into a small window and are often
avoided by pasting into a window that is full screen size.
Interesting new problem with your pars.....when I opened them, they were
all named the same!!!! Apparently this is due to the spaces you left
between the names. Another Fractint lesson learned....don't put spaces
in the names of pars.
Here's a fun par.....since it's on the slow side, generate it when you
have other things to do.

How about implementing color formula parser using real numbers (or complex
if you'd like) like the formula parser for fractal. Instead of
determining how long it takes to diverge out of a bailout, it'll map this
rate to a color.
How will painting actually work? Are the 16 million color maps? 16MB
maps don't seem very possible...

Jiho

Thanks for this valuable piece of information. I hope other Netscape
Navigator/Communicator in our group are aware of this.

Thanks again. I noticed that two. Not much of a problem, since they were
just numbered from one to ten. My next batch, coming soon to a computer
near you, will have titles typed the correct way.
