  35. Hey Thierry.
  36. I checked out your fractal you sent out.
  37. It "was" different in FP! I also used Bio-morph (256) and it looked
  38. pretty cool.
  39.
  40. I'm not sure what you mean by posting the parameters, maybe you could
  41. explain it or send an example.
  42. Anyway, thanks for trying the one I sent out.

  130. Yeah I know I said list administration issues were off topic, but
  131. here I go violating my own suggestion <grin!> Actually I overstated
  132. the case, there probably are some list administration messages of
  133. general interest that would be on topic. Hmm ... if all list
  134. administration messages are off topic, then a message stating that as
  135. the policy would be off topic <heh heh!>
  136.
  137. I'll be out of town until Sunday. The list can go on merrily as
  138. always, I'm just alerting you all in case anyone needs any special
  139. list administration services. I won't be able to help with any
  140. special requests until Sunday.
  141.
  142. Just a reminder, this list only accepts postings from addresses that
  143. majordomo recognizes as a fractint list subscriber. Sometimes
  144. postings bounce because folks have posted from a different account,
  145. or from some reason the return address is different than the
  146. subscribed email address. For isolated cases I usually just post such
  147. bounced messages by hand, so you may not have noticed. When I'm
  148. really on the ball I also let folks know it happened, especially if
  149. it happens several times. This is not a big problem for most people,
  150. although it was bothersome for a couple of folks who have "anti-spam"
  151. return addresses.

  245. Subject: (fractint) Conformal Mappings and Beautiful Mandelbrots
  246.
  247. Ever noticed a sort of beauty and symmetry to mandelbrots and fractals
  248. from complex number formulas lacking in real-real formulas like some of
  249. the ones in The beauty Of Fractals? My suspicion has been it is because
  250. complex mappings are conformal: right angles are preserved.
  251. For instance, look at the square of (a+bi). The real part is a^2-b^2, the
  252. imaginary part 2ab. These equations both describe hyperbolas; the families
  253. of hyperbolas defined setting x^2-y^2 const and 2xy const are orthogonal
  254. families, they cross at right angles. An idea of mine has been this:
  255.
  256. Start with an implicit differential equation. dy/dx=f(x,y). Solve it. (Yes
  257. this can be tough.) Then solve the inverse dy/dx=-1/f(x,y). Their
  258. solution sets will be orthogoanl families of curves. Or, get a function
  259. such as f(x,y)=const. Get dy/dx. Negate and invert and solve the differential
  260. equation as before to get a curve family g(x,y)=const orthogonal to the curves
  261. f(x,y)=const.
  262.
  263.
  264. Now imagine defining a map from R2 (real by real cartesian plane) to R2 by
  265. x'=f(x,y), y'=g(x,y). This is a conformal map. A combination of several
  266. such conformal maps and adding a paremeter or three might produce
  267. worthwhile Julia/Mandelbrot sets.
  268.
  269. For example, take the ellipses x^2+2y^2=const. 2x=-4y(dy/dx) so dy/dx is
  270. - -x/2y. Put dy/dx=2y/x =-1/(-x/2y). This is separable: dy/2y = dx/x.
  271. Integrate both sides: 1/2ln |y| = ln |x| + C   or, taking exponentials of
  272. both sides, root y = xe^c or y=Kx^2, a family of parabolas.
  273. So the mappings would be: x'=x^2+2y^2, y'=y/x^2 (solving for K=y').
  274. Try them out I'd love to hear the results.

  380. Subject: (fractint) DOS Versions of Fractint
  381.
  382. We are new to the Fractint mailing list and although we do not
  383. understand most of what you have been talking about, because we
  384. don't write fractal formulas and such, we just wanted to put our two
  385. bits in about whether Fractint should continue in DOS versions in
  386. future.
  387. We say yes, continue to ALWAYS make DOS versions!
  388.
  389. There are probably many people like us that prefer the simplicity of
  390. DOS Fractint versions over Windows or who don't have pcs
  391. that are up to running resource hungry Windows versions.
  392. My 64 year old husband is the main Fractint user here.
  393.  I taught him to use the computer and run Fractint when he read
  394. Chaos theory and got interested in the Mandlebrot Set.
  395. He started with version 17.1 and now has version 19.6.
  396. He tried the Windows Version and he hated it. The Windows
  397. themselves kept distracting him and he soon went back to the DOS
  398. version. We started running fractals on a 386 and now have a Pentium
  399. 133 with lots of memory.
  400. To summarise: DOS programs in the case of Fractint (and Povray) are
  401. much easier to use for people who are not all that happy about using
  402. computers but use them only because there are programs like Fractint
  403. (and Povray) for DOS which they get great enjoyment from.
  404. Regards to all,
  405. Ethel MacKay

  423. Hi,
  424.
  425. In the Fractint Wish-list Justin Kolodziej asket for "no more integer math"...
  426. The poorly known TYPE=JULIBROT fractals are able to build beautiful 3d
  427. stereo-pairs, but only in integer-math. Setting the FPU=ON, causes flat 2d
  428. fractals (except for those orbits wich use functions like sin, cos, tan and
  429. cotan). To give you an idea, I attachet a .par file to this mail..
  430. Sorry, but all the Julibrots are very slow-running even on a P200! To see
  431. the difference, switch on and of the FPU with the letter <F>. If you like to
  432. see the fractals 3-dimensional, the stereo-pairs and/or the 2x3 and 5x5
  433. pairs must be fused like the "magic-eye" pictures that means, with the eyes
  434. in parallel or, if indicated, with the eyes crossed, that means: the left
  435. eye is looking to the right side and the rigth eye is looking to the left
  436. side.. be patient, it mostly works after a while  8~(   -   :)
  437.
  438. To build some "parallel-eyes" 3d fractals, the "Z" screen option <depht of
  439. z> must be negative, a positive number for <depth of z> builds
  440. "crossed-eyes" 3d fractals..
  441.
  442. So please Stone-Soupers keep up the option: FPU ON/OFF.. even if the
  443. difference (in the JULIBROTS: FPU ON/OFF) results in a programming fault do
  444. not correct this "fault"
  445.
  446. thanks in advance!
  447.
  448. enjoy experimenting with the JULIBROTS.. ;)
