Tasteless? Ben, their title is 80% the reason why I love to spend my
money on them!
They are:
"Hot Nips", voll. 1 + 2 (Dolemite);
the Norton catalogue defines them, respectively, as:
"warped japanese sixties garage combos galore!" (vol. 1) and
"still mo' nagasaki nuggets" (vol. 2).
Then there's
"Slitherama: Monster a Go-Go", with Godzilla on cover (Planet X),
which gets rated as "klayzee 60's jap-punk - godzilla size lock &
loll" and
"Project Blue, vol. 3: Diamonds From The East, Sixties Lost Punk
Gems From Hong Kong Bands" (Destination X).
All these are pure vinyl only, and the latter is only available from
my pal Scanna, who compiled it.
As starters I'd suggest:
"G.S. I Love You - Japanese Garage Bands of the 60's" and
"G.S. I Love You Too", cds on Big Beat, which the mighty Hitomi
helped compile.
No Tigers on any of them, though.

No, I never have problems with CDs or CD-Rs, so no need to buy this set.

I've had some success with badly scratched CD's by using a very fine
automobile "cut and polish" compound. Far cheaper than those CD dedicated
formula and the same principle.
I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work with CDR as the scratches in the
clear plastic underside of the disc are the problem not the recorded layer
itself.

I never have any tiki news but I think I just read that there's a new TV
series next year called "Tikiville". I might have misread it and there was
no mention of tikis in the description of the series - a sitcom I think -
but still, who knows?

OK, I stole the following from today's Iconocast Prosumer e-letter. Can someone please tell me (a person who hasn't made it to DVD yet) if this format war is anything I need to pay attention to? In other words, if I ignore it long enough will it all go away, or am I actually going to have to think and make a decision about this stuff. And please tell me that my present CDs and CD-Rs are cool for at least a while and not going the way of beta or laserdiscs.

Super Audio Face-off:
Philips SACD-1000 vs. Sony DVP-S9000ES
Consumers face a choice when it comes to next-generation, high-end audio. In one corner are Philips and Sony, the original developers of CD Audio, backing Super Audio CD (SACD). The other corner features the Matsushita camp (Panansonic, Technics, JVC, Onkyo, Denon, etc.), promoting DVD Audio (DVD-A).
SACD has one advantage: more software. There are 152 SACDs available for sale today vs. a paltry 17 DVD-A discs, despite Warner Music's high-profile participation. Reason: The DVD-A camp spent the past two years bickering over copy protection, while SACDs won over the most finicky turntable lovers. Though the SACD side claims many of its disks will be two-layer hybrids that can be played on any ordinary CD player, few are available today.
Now Philips has released the SACD1000, the first multi-channel player, a key feature trumpeted by the DVD-A camp. By comparison, the recently released Sony DVP-S9000ES only does two-channel audio. The Philips unit features a stylish, sandblasted aluminum design in contrast to the mundane, black faceplate featured on the Sony DVP-S9000ES.
Both units play DVD videos, cutting down equipment clutter. The Philips SACD1000 does not support progressive scan output, however, a major drawback. The Sony, on the other hand, doesn't play CD-Rs but has received positive reviews on AudioReview.com.
Bottomline: If this war reminds you of the Beta-VHS battle, you're not alone. The winner will be the one offering the most software. Right now, it's a toss-up. If you must have one now, the Sony seems a more viable option. Hedge your bets with a less expensive DVD-A changer. (Also be aware that Sony plans to release a $399 multi-channel SACD-only player in July!) In a future issue we'll look at the ambassadors of the DVD Audio realm.
US$2000 Philips SACD1000 (Avail. Mar. 2001)
US$1295 Sony DVP-S9000ES (Sound Distributors)

NBC Greenlights 'Tikiville'
Thu, Feb 15, 2001 11:38 AM PDT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - NBC is taking over "Tikiville," a half-hour comedy pilot developed by ABC's former programming chief, Jamie Tarses, according to Variety. Tarses will executive produce the pilot with "Darma & Greg" co-creator Dottie Zicklin, who wrote the pilot, and James Burrows.
"Tikiville" is a romantic comedy about a 30-year-old single mother whose life is turned upside down when the father of her child suddenly re-enters her life after a 14-year absence. The series, set in south Florida, will switch back and forth between the couple's current relationship and their days as teen lovers.
Other networks, including FOX, were interesting in the series, but NBC wrapped a deal for the pilot Wednesday.
In related news, The WB has greenlit a remake of the '70s Saturday morning classic "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl." While the old ABC version was about two magazine reporters, the new version will feature a young college student going to Las Vegas, where she finds Electra Woman and soon becomes her Dyna Girl.

I have a laserdisc player, and a dvd player, I buy movies, some are not
on DVD so I try to find the laserdisc, if there was one. For people who
love movies dvd is ultimate, not only does it look and sound great, the
care that they put in for the rerelease on dvd is amazing, old films
looks like new, and they try to fit the whole movie onto the screen,
not just selected pieces of it. For a guy who have seen a lot 3:rd or
5th generation pan and scan videotapes, dvd is something of a miracle,
it almost feels like watching the movie at a cinema. the experience is
like seeing the movie for the first time.
When it comes to music I feel more at home with LPs, it is optimal for
me, just enough tracks on each side, and you remember where the good
tracks are. CD is impossible, it is too many tracks. DVD audio sounds
like a nightmare. How much maybe 10 hours of music. No, not for me, I
will stick to vinyl and an occasional homemade CDr.
I think you are cool Lou, pay no attention to these people, they have
sold their soul to the digital demon. like nearly all have. Me included.
The turks who make carpets, they now the secret, to perfect is a
violation to God. Something must be wrong in everything you make. The
mistakes are sacred. Digital faults is just not pretty, not at all
pretty.

I know the hardcover edition was signed, and limited to 225 signed copies,
so there may be none of those left. But there is also a softcover, and I
don't know how limited that one was. It's a wonderful book - I believe
there was supposed to be a US distributor (Last Gasp in San Francisco), but
you can check all the details at:

who are the publishers. I bought mine through them (a birthday splurge -
along with the Shag book - and both are wonderful)

Anything Can

While looking up Abbe Lane in the IMDB last weekend I saw the "onTV" link
highlighted. Surprisingly the Encore Western Channel was showing "The
Americano" that day. I tuned in just in time to see her do a long version of
"El Americano," first the song and then a long dance number with a smoking
rhythm section. The IMDB credits Cugie with this song and gives a score
credit to Roy Webb, my favorite overlooked genre film composer. Didn't look
for Cugie or a chihuaha, I was too busy waiting for Abbe's peasant blouse to
fall further down her shoulder, but of course it was 1955 so fergeddaboutit.
Because of my fortunate timing, I was able to skip the rest of the movie.
BTW MGM is putting out a lot of reasonably priced ($10 to $15 MSRP) bare
bones DVD's in its "Soul Cinema" and "Midnight Movies" series like Man From
Planet X and Wild Angels. Word is the video transfers and sound are not
always great, but check www.mondo-digital.com or your favorite cult sites
for reviews. And I just got Boorman's jungle-eco-nudie-exotic "Emerald
Forest" in today's mail, yessss, pass that peace pipe and fly like an eagle.
Also the very eclectic Roan Group sold its DVD catalogue to Troma, which is
having a 75% sale on Roan DVD's, many as low as $4.99. (horror, noir,
westerns, pre-code, serials). US shipping is $7 per order plus $1.50 per
item, but its still a deal if you buy 5 or 6. Don't know about international
shipping. There was a one week sale last week, and it was just reinstated
today. Move quickly if interested. Time for me to get White Zombie and the
gorilla-flick "Nabonga" with an 18 year old Julie London that I passed on
last week because there was a Ritz Bros movie on the same DVD. I rented and
was not impressed enough to buy by King Vidor's exotica-themed but rather
dull 1932 Bird of Paradise, although iirc it was Max Steiner's first full
score, and foreshadowed his work for King Kong released the next year.

You don't need to go back that far. How about tv and movie tie-in Corgi

from the 60's? Or baseball cards and comic books? Records prices are a

we flew in from NYC last night, so, bleary eyed, I skimmed over some exotica
postings before night night. This one caught my eye. :(
This morning I re-read Mr. Usselman's post and see nothing in it at all that
deserves being called an asshole.
He's right, it's the buyers that set the prices on ebay. This idea that
sellers are "jacking up the prices" is baloney, that's not the way it works.
Sure, there are some that set minimums high, or use reserves, but 90% of the
sellers kick it off under ten bucks and let the buyers decide. We always
seem to forget about all the large number of records that never receive a
bid or are sold to a single bidder. Like the near mint Mike Simpson "Jungle
Odyssey" I got for three bucks. :)
I'm with U, Mr. U.
