As Bumpy mentioned, the new album, due out on Asphodel in Feb '01 is called
"Uh Oh!" and as Cleve said a 12" single will be out next month (I forget
the a-side, but the b-side is "XXXmas," with 2 versions of both tracks).
Even if Wal-Mart stocked 12"s, I think the sleeve would put them off of
this one! Bump probably got a better listen to the album tracks than I did
because while the music was playing on the air, we were talking in the
studio. Suffice to say that anyone who dug "Trip Tease" will not be
dissapointed by the new material.
Live, they were great, too. I especially liked that they had a live
guitarist. The line-up was Dave on turntables, Tim on a Realistic synth (a
Moog Rogue copy, I think) and another box of some sort (sampler?), Travis
on drums and a small keyboard, Alex on guitar and.... damn, I want to say
Andrew (profuse apologies if I have his name wrong) on keyboards and
assorted other boxes. Swell guys, all.
As Cleve said, the old songs were recognizable, but different enough to be
interesting. Their set lasted about an hour. It was kind of an odd bill
(they played with This Mortal Coil spin-off Breathless), but their set made
it worthwhile. I'm glad I dragged my lame ass out after work for once!
In case anyone is interested, the playlist from our show on Wed was:
Hard Petting
Hey!
Kitty Takes a Ride
31 22 36 (from the Charles Wilp Bunny Remixes album)
Wig Out
Sweet Cinnamon Punch
Bunny Kick
XXXmas
Reverse Cowgirl
Swallowtail

I guess this is a Halloween thing but was this on television in Montreal
like it was in Toronto? I don't know if Showcase has the same schedule
both places.
Anyway... I have a feeling I'm going to get an argument on this -
especially from you soundtrack folks - but having now seen the film, I must
say that I can't think of another film where the soundtrack seems so uh..
disconnected from the film it's supposed to be "supporting". The music is
there, the film is there. And I like the music. And I even kind of liked
the film. But when the music was playing, I kept thinking someone upstairs
had their stereo on too loud. "Oh that's the music for the film???
Could've fooled me".
And I don't think it's just because I was familiar with the music before I
saw the film.
Now, if one of you folks - especially you Canadians - tells me that the
music perfectly supports the film, then uh... well let's just say, even
knowing how much we disagree about soundtracks, I still don't think we're
going to disagree about this.

You may or may not know most if not all of their releases are available on
vinyl with these vinyl packaging being of very high quality. I'm not sure
the vinyl format is as well distributed but since this group is from here
we have both versions available. I suppose I should really listen to them
as it was someone in Germany actually first mentioned them to me. All
reviews I've ever come across are nothing short of glowing!

If a man spells his name B-L-A-C-K and pronounces it W-H-I-T-E, the man's
name is White. My suggestion: Go right to the horse and ask the source..he'll
give us the answer that we endorse...JB

There's a book out called "Pad"; it also shows some nice examples of exotica
and tiki interieur, esp. the really cool appartment of Dale Sizer.

Good description, Alan. But I think this is quite typical for a certain kind
of 70s B-movies, especially sex-films.

There are only two other ones, the "Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada" EP is the
next one to buy : two long classical pieces with heavenly melodies. The
first album "a#f# infinity" (good titles he?) is excellent too but more cut
up with samples.
> Hi Arjan, Who is Mogwai? Are any sound samples available

Scottish guitarband who almost exclusively play instrumental mood pieces. A
bit boring to most I know but I like them. A typical song would consist a
long quiet intro until a wall of feedback comes kicking in unexpectantly.
Watching this live always made me jumpy as those bursts put feel Sonic Youth
encores to shame. Glorious noise anyway. Lots of stuff can be found through
Napster. And on a final indie note, will be seeing Tindersticks in Amsterdam
next friday.

Yup, same schedule. We taped it (it's been one of those weeks - we
couldn't stay awake late enough to watch it all...) but our first
impression was how strange the German dialogue sounded (I had always
thought that it was Spanish - maybe because it was Jess Franco
directing) Haven't seen enough to form an impression of how the music
sounded...

On the other hand, we also saw "Up The Down Staircase" this week, and
were just blown away by the soundtrack - some really great tunes, and
they worked very well with the film.

There's a spin-off project called 'A Silver Mount Zion', which is three
members of Godspeed... They have one album called 'He has left us alone
but shafts of light sometimes grace the corner of our rooms'.

'Ten Rapid' - a CD compilation of the first few EPs is better than the
full-length 'Young Team' CD... but both are very good. 'Slo-fi' is name
often given to the genre, for those looking for more. Labradford's 'Mi
media naranja' is even better, but much more relaxed.

Speaking of having to work while listening to jazz versus not having to work as hard while listening to easy listening, that's what's great about crime jazz! It's pretty effort-free listening as jazz goes, without being that horrible jazz fusion garbage of today. (Though I admit even that has its virtues at times, but I'm not going to go into that.)
I used to be really into the most innocuous easy listening because it was so effortless -- all those records tagged "background music" and "soothing" and the Jackie Gleason albums and so on. But I also listened to very difficult listening in the same time period. Then I began looking for something in the middle, and on the less easy side ended up with the whole crime jazz style. Of course there are all sorts of crossovers.
Since I've been thinking about Julie London all week, Around Midnight is a good album for soothing easy and some jazz standards combined, for example. It's a shame that the cover art was taken hostage for that Time For Love compilation which doesn't even have any of the good songs from Around Midnight on it.

I like a track off of String Fever called "Wildwood". Very porno soundtrack
sounding, right up there with anything on Easytempo. That track get's a lot
of play when I DJ. I was wondering how the Paint It Black sounds. I saw a
